Another bullshit day in suck city for Mr. Lester.
   2. Textbook Editor Posted: July 22, 2012 at 01:45 PM (#4189095)
He may not make it out of the first.

My money is on he's hurt and hiding it.
   3. Textbook Editor Posted: July 22, 2012 at 01:47 PM (#4189096)
I seem to recall seeing this game just a few days ago...
   4. Textbook Editor Posted: July 22, 2012 at 01:48 PM (#4189098)
Pull him.
   5. Textbook Editor Posted: July 22, 2012 at 01:49 PM (#4189100)
Either he's tipping or he's hurt. I find it hard to believe he's just found the cliff and jumped off for good.

Man, am I glad I'll be heading out to see movies at the film festival before this ends. This is reminding me of when I used to hate watching Jon Lester in his first year or two.
   7. Chip Posted: July 22, 2012 at 01:55 PM (#4189105)
All the injuries, and whatever you want to say about dumb trades, but it's Lester and Beckett who continue to crush this team's playoff chances.
   8. Dan Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:07 PM (#4189111)
Turning on the game to see I missed Lester giving up 5 runs in the first inning is... something.
   9. Textbook Editor Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:08 PM (#4189113)

Yup.
   10. Jay Seaver Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:09 PM (#4189114)
Well, at least now I can be pretty sure that the real Adrian Gonzalez has escaped from whatever prison he's been held in and dispatched his evil doppelganger.
   11. Textbook Editor Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:10 PM (#4189115)
See, now you've gotten back into the game... you owe it to the offense to just pull Lester and go with a bullpen game. Lester goes back out there and gives up 3 more I'd be rightfully pissed were I a position player. Give yourself a chance to win the game.
   12. Chip Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:12 PM (#4189118)
I want to be excited about Gonzalez's HR, but all I can think is that Lester will do just enough to let Toronlo push it back to a comfortable lead once he gets back out there.

Pedroia appears to be giving Lester quite the lecture in the dugout. I wonder how often "stop ####### sucking" was repeated.
   13. Dan Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:16 PM (#4189122)
Pull him.
   14. Jay Seaver Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:16 PM (#4189123)
Screw you, Lester.
   15. Jay Seaver Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:17 PM (#4189125)
Also, just how much nothing does Lester have to show before somebody wakes up in the bullpen?
   16. Joel W Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:17 PM (#4189126)
Maybe he was saying "if you're injured, ####### tell somebody"
   17. Chip Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:18 PM (#4189127)
Why would you even risk bunting for a hit now that Lester has demonstrated his suckiness? That's a very stupid free out.
   18. Jay Seaver Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:18 PM (#4189128)
As much as I'd like that to be the case, that doesn't exactly sound like something Pedroia would say based on his own history.
   19. Textbook Editor Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:21 PM (#4189131)
[sigh]
   20. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:22 PM (#4189135)
Wow, never expected that to happen.
   21. Dan Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:22 PM (#4189136)
I'm glad we left him in the game long enouh to do that. #### you Lester, #### you Valentine, #### you McClure.
   22. Chip Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:22 PM (#4189137)
I hate being right.
   23. Joel W Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:22 PM (#4189138)
Just awful.
   24. Jay Seaver Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:23 PM (#4189139)
Son of a...

Seriously, no-one throwing? What the hell, Sox?
   25. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:23 PM (#4189140)
Season over kids. Sub-.500 after this road trip. We are actually going to finish last this year aren't we?
   26. Chip Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:24 PM (#4189142)
He's not even trying at this point.
   27. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:25 PM (#4189147)
Does Jon Lester have anything OTHER than a fastball?
   28. Jay Seaver Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:25 PM (#4189148)
Everyone in the offense gets a free shot at Lester after this inning, right?
   29. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:26 PM (#4189149)
Ok, time to mow the lawn
   30. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:26 PM (#4189150)
I'm glad we left him in the game long enouh to do that. #### you Lester, #### you Valentine, #### you McClure.

Seconded
   31. Chip Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:27 PM (#4189152)
I mean Jesus, he's at two outs, man on second, chance to escape the inning with no damage. That's the point even a competent league average veteran can usually execute.
   32. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:30 PM (#4189156)
At this point I'd make this piece of #### pitch a complete game
   33. Chip Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:31 PM (#4189159)
Orsillo and Remy openly questioning why Lester isn't being pulled at this point.
   34. Jay Seaver Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:31 PM (#4189160)
32 - That's a cruel thing to do to the paying customers.

Wait, Tazawa has sat down? What the heck?
   35. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:31 PM (#4189162)
God I'm livid. These ####### have destroyed a beautiful Sunday afternoon for me. Anything I say today should've considered irrational rantings and not well thought opinion.
   36. Dan Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:33 PM (#4189165)
They should option him to Pawtucket after today.
   37. Jay Seaver Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:35 PM (#4189167)
Clearly, Bobby Valentine hates Red Sox fans this afternoon.
   38. Textbook Editor Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:36 PM (#4189169)
Well, maybe he's being left in to really get hurt, and thereby removing himself from the rotation? Or to humiliate him into admitting the injury?
   39. Chip Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:40 PM (#4189171)
I'm all for humiliating him at this point.

Hey look, a scoreless inning!
   40. Dan Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:40 PM (#4189173)
Seems pretty clear that Valentine wants to humiliate him for one reason or another. Either to bust his arrogance and get him to work with the coaches or to admit an injury or something. Or to try and force Cherington to DL him or option him to AAA.
   41. Dan Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:42 PM (#4189174)
Or to venture another guess, Valentine wanted Morales to stay in the rotation, and now he's letting Lester throw away a game to make his point.
   42. Textbook Editor Posted: July 22, 2012 at 02:42 PM (#4189176)
#40 makes sense.

43...Billy Beane traded Jeremy Giambi out from under Art Howe in "Moneyball". I bet Howe wasn't laughing.

That's about right. Being down by 6 in the 4th means you guys have about an 80% chance of winning.
   47. Chip Posted: July 22, 2012 at 03:15 PM (#4189196)
Down six, you really want to get more than one out of a bases loaded, one-out situation.
   48. Textbook Editor Posted: July 22, 2012 at 03:19 PM (#4189202)
Another inning, another leadoff walk. Ho-hum.
   49. Chip Posted: July 22, 2012 at 03:20 PM (#4189206)
And another HR after a walk. Rinse, repeat.
   50. Textbook Editor Posted: July 22, 2012 at 03:20 PM (#4189207)
No, please... keep him out there and shame the man. The "Scout" just told me he's got plenty left in the tank. I think 125 pitches would be fine.
   51. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 22, 2012 at 03:21 PM (#4189209)
3rd pitcher this year to allow 11 or more runs in a game. I'm just pissed at everyone right now. As much as I dislike Lester at this moment I think it was asinine to leave him in there this long.
   52. Textbook Editor Posted: July 22, 2012 at 03:22 PM (#4189210)
For those who aren't watching... What was the reaction when he got pulled? Did he scowl at Valentine?

My guess is Lester will be long gone by the time the clubhouse opens up.
   53. mathesond Posted: July 22, 2012 at 03:22 PM (#4189211)
Good to see the Lunchbox Hero get his first HR of the season. I'd love to see Snider play full-time with the big club for the rest of the season

Some guys on a forum at BBTF were trying to convince me earlier this week that Lester would give the Sox a fine chance to win a one-game WC playoff.

I think a healthy and right Jon Lester absolutely would. Right now the problem is he is at best just one of those two things. Jon Lester's track record is that of a pitcher who should be counted on in a one game "winner take all" situation. Unfortunately he is not pitching the way he is capable for some reason.
   56. Bad Fish Posted: July 22, 2012 at 04:06 PM (#4189236)
To 52, I didn't see any scowl, he kind of had a vacant 1000-yard stare as The V dispatched him. He got a loud round of boos as he slowly walked back to the dugout. He actually looked like he might have started crying, a little. He went right into the clubhouse and a few guys gave an ataboy pat on the shoulder as he went down the stairs. He looked way more dejected and maybe even resigned than Adam Scott did today, on the 18th.

I then turned off the TV.

Melancon's post-recall pixie dust going the way of Albers.
