Let's see if Samardzija can follow up on yesterday's clutch HBP.

Yesterday was my first game of the year. Buddy had extra tickets, and we ran over once they announced a start time. There was a cold wind blowing in most of the game, but it was pretty entertaining baseball. Not sure who the blame falls on, but the first and third base coaches didn't seem to have very good days.

Should we start calling him HBPJ?

Not the best timing for this one. The Braves scored about 450 runs last week.

That got out in a hurry.

Love that LaHair-Stewart combo. Like Ruth and Gehrig out there!

So do we just have to accept that HBPJ is a good starting pitcher now? I mean, I definitely am OK with this, but at the same time, it doesn't make much sense to me and I feel I have to make some adjustments to my worldview.

Little known fact: Ian Stewart made his ML debut against the Cubs back in 2007, starting at 3B in Coors Field. Rich Hill pitched for the Cubs that day, and Stewart went 0-2 with a run scored before being double-switched out of the game. His first AB came in the 2nd, and he flied out to deep left.

Unfortunately, the Cubs lost 15-2.

Now I guess we get the Carlos Marmol experience.

Braves aren't even lifting the bats off their shoulders.

Marmol suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks.

Man, Freeman isn't even pretending he's going to swing at this point.
   13. Brian C Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:31 PM (#4125974)
Credit to Marmol - he made things hard on himself, but he made some pitches there when he had to.

Soto!

So Cardenas is pronounced CAR-den-as, not car-DAYN-as, as I assumed. Good to know.
   16. SouthSideRyan Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:41 PM (#4125993)
Marmol was getting squeezed since he wasn't anywhere close to the zone on the actual balls.

That inning really wasn't too far off from good, not great Marmol of years past.
   17. SouthSideRyan Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:43 PM (#4125997)
Cardenas is also far whiter than I expected.
   18. Brian White Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:43 PM (#4125998)
Allow me to look on the bright side - the Braves probably weren't winning this one anyway, and maybe this gets us that much closer to Chad Durbin being replaced by Yohan Flande, or someone else who can put up a sub-8 ERA.
   19. Brian C Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:44 PM (#4126000)
I only noticed him getting squeezed on the one pitch, on a 2-0 count, which was followed up by a ball nowhere near the zone. And it's hardly unusual to see a pitch on the outside low corner of the zone get called a ball.

He looked awful until that lineout by Freeman. Then he looked pretty great. Uggla just had no chance.

It wasn't against a real ML team, but Carlos Zambrano threw a complete-game shutout tonight.
