Now Buchholz isn't just missing a start but is on the DL with the "gastrointestinal illness" which landed him in the hospital.
   2. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 12:52 PM (#4164751)
Jesus this is getting ridiculous.
   3. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 01:03 PM (#4164758)
Not sure how meaningful it is but apparently Bob McClure is back with the tesm
   4. Chip Posted: June 24, 2012 at 01:56 PM (#4164769)
Middlebrooks, obviously disgruntled about not being allowed to play the field, shows his displeasure by grounding into a double play.
   5. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 01:59 PM (#4164772)
Prima Donna.
   6. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:00 PM (#4164774)
So apparently between shutting off the TV last night and turning it on today a backlight CCFL tube burnt out. So I either need to take the TV apart myself and replace a $20 bulb, or take it to a technician who will charge me for an entire new LCD panel, or replace the TV. And I'm watching the game on my iPad.
   7. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:02 PM (#4164776)
Look at this as an opportunity to buy a bigger and better tv!
   8. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:09 PM (#4164779)
Gonzalez simply can't reach the outside pitch.
   9. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:11 PM (#4164780)
Nice moment here for Youk.
   10. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:12 PM (#4164782)
Gonzalez simply can't reach the outside pitch.

Indeed. How the #### do you go from the most prolific opposite field power hitter in the game to not even being able to put outside pitches in play with authority in one year? It's like he's aged 10 years overnight.
   11. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:14 PM (#4164785)
Until I can find evidence proving otherwise I'm going to insist that he is just further off the plate this year.
   12. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:17 PM (#4164786)
He doesn't look any further off the plate to me. It just looks like his frontside shoulder won't let him reach out there and hit the ball with authority.
   13. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:18 PM (#4164787)
Furthermore, in general he's hitting a lot more with his top hand, thus rolling over a bunch of pitches for groundouts to the right side.
   14. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:19 PM (#4164788)
Just looks like a guy who doesn't trust his right shoulder to do the work anymore, whether due to actual injury, fear of re-injury, or simply bad habits accrued while dealing with aggravating the injury in the 2nd half of last season.
   15. Jay Seaver Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:23 PM (#4164790)
Sounds like a nutty play on the radio - how's it look on TV?
   16. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:23 PM (#4164791)
Looked like the right call to me. Didn't see him drop the ball ever there.
   17. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:24 PM (#4164792)
Nutty. They are still looking at the replay and can't figure it out.
   18. Mattbert Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:33 PM (#4164796)
Speculation is that Buchholz is suffering from intestinal bleeding - too much ibuprofen.
   19. Chip Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:40 PM (#4164805)
For a groundball pitcher Cook sure is giving up a lot of flyballs.
   20. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:46 PM (#4164812)
Pedroia looks weird cleanly shaven.
   21. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:48 PM (#4164814)
Good god Orsillo is ####### clueless at flyballs.
   22. Jay Seaver Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:49 PM (#4164815)
Cody!

(Ross has been a pretty good pick-up, hasn't he?)
   23. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:50 PM (#4164817)
Orsillo completely fails at reading Gonzalez's homer as well.

Good to see him homer to the opposite field though.
   24. Jay Seaver Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:50 PM (#4164818)
ADRIAN???!?!!!
   25. Chip Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:51 PM (#4164819)
That's the most encouraging swing he's taken in about 6 weeks.
   26. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:54 PM (#4164821)
That's the most encouraging swing he's taken in about 6 weeks.

He had that one game against the Marlins where he hit a homer, a double high off the monster that was probably a homer in most parks, and a ball Nady robbed a homer on in the RF bullpen. But after that he went right back to lacking any ability to drive the ball, until today.
   27. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:56 PM (#4164824)
If Pedroia and Gonzalez are really each about to go on a tear, this team should be able to get right back into the thick of the race.
   28. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:57 PM (#4164826)
That's still a pretty big if as of this moment, IMO.
   29. Chip Posted: June 24, 2012 at 02:57 PM (#4164827)
I was indulging some hyperbole. I just hope we don't get another long dry stretch until his next encouraging swing.
   30. Chip Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:01 PM (#4164831)
If Pedroia and Gonzalez are really each about to go on a tear, this team should be able to get right back into the thick of the race.

When your second best available starting pitcher at the moment appears to be Franklin Morales, bludgeoning opponents with offense may become imperative.
   31. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:02 PM (#4164833)
Pedroia's strikeouts have disappeared in the last two weeks. I would bet on him being healthy and ready to go on a hot streak any moment. Gonzalez is a mystery to us all.
   32. Chip Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:04 PM (#4164835)
Like I said, Aaron Cook is giving up way too many flyballs.
   33. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:04 PM (#4164837)
I don't know if that would have been playable for a better CF - it did hit near the top of the wall, but McDonald made an unholy mess of the carom.
   34. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:04 PM (#4164838)
Darnell McDonald in CF makes me incredibly sad.

And Cook is handing these runs right back :(
   35. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:05 PM (#4164840)
I don't think that was really catchable barring a superhuman effort, but a smart OFer backs off and plays the carom.
   36. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:05 PM (#4164841)
Chip - yeah, I'm not surprised that a pitcher who couldn't strike out anyone in AAA is giving up too much contact in Fenway...

oh, ######### Cook. Get the sure out.
   37. Chip Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:06 PM (#4164842)
Oh for ##### sake.
   38. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:06 PM (#4164843)
Jesus christ, just pull Cook. He got you into the 5th inning with a lead. Thank whatever god you pray to that this somehow happened and get a good pitcher in this game.

HOLY ####### #### ARE YOU KIDDING?
   39. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:07 PM (#4164845)
GET HIM OUT OF THE ####### GAME VALENTINE
   40. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:07 PM (#4164846)
Got Red Sox on the computer tv, England-Italy on the tv tv. This is fun. (Except for the part where the Red Sox pitcher is entirely washed up and doesn't seem to know how to execute a run-down.)
   41. plink Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:12 PM (#4164854)
You can yell about the defense, but Cook has done fine -- the first two hits were not hit well. Only mistake was to Hinske.
   42. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:12 PM (#4164856)
Cook actually induced mostly weak groundballs that inning. Just badly placed and badly played.
   43. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:13 PM (#4164858)
(coke to plink)
   44. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:16 PM (#4164861)
You could just see that happening as Simmons took an extra step to take the ball out of his glove. A faster runner and he has no time to think, and Simmons gets him.
   45. Chip Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:16 PM (#4164862)
Did Simmons not know Kelly Shoppach was running and there was no need to rush?
   46. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:18 PM (#4164866)
I think MCoA has it right in 44. Like a lot of gifted young defensive players, Simmons does better when he doesn't have time to think about what he's doing.
   47. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:23 PM (#4164872)
Cody Ross loves Fenway Park.
   48. Chip Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:24 PM (#4164874)
That was a picture perfect curveball swing. Waited, waited, golfed it.
   49. Chip Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:26 PM (#4164876)
Adrian taking a walk is as encouraging as an oppo HR.
   50. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:26 PM (#4164878)
(I know that's out of every park in the known world, but he clearly loves being able to open his hips and use his dead-pull swing whenever he wants. )
   51. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:44 PM (#4164905)
There should be a special notation in the scorebook for a double that can drive Kelly Shoppach in from first base.
   52. Chip Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:44 PM (#4164906)
How happy was Nava to be able to turn around at bat lefty?
   53. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:44 PM (#4164907)
(Yeah, I made the same mistake as Jerry...)
   54. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: June 24, 2012 at 03:58 PM (#4164920)
Shoppach seems to enjoy himself out there. Good for him.
   55. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:09 PM (#4164935)
Nice moment.

Such a perfect Youklidian slide there if that's his last moment in a Sox uniform.
   56. plink Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:10 PM (#4164936)
So, you think Youk is going to be traded?
   57. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:10 PM (#4164937)
This looks an awful lot like a trade is a sure thing...
   58. Jay Seaver Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:11 PM (#4164938)
This'll be awkward if Youk isn't traded.
   59. Chip Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:11 PM (#4164939)
Yeah, geez, I guess the trade is complete.
   60. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:11 PM (#4164941)
The fans and Youkilis and the rest of the Red Sox clearly do. It's sad. I hope Cherington gets an actual return.
   61. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:16 PM (#4164946)
It may well be that it's time to trade him, but I'ma gonna miss that sweaty bald man.
   62. Chip Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:18 PM (#4164948)
Trolling around, haven't come across any story of a completed deal.
   63. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:23 PM (#4164960)
The fans and Youkilis and the rest of the Red Sox clearly do. It's sad. I hope Cherington gets an actual return.

Based on his history of trading starting position players, I'm expecting a reliever not good enough to make the 25 man roster.
   64. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:25 PM (#4164963)

Sean McAdam ?@Sean_McAdam
Source: Can confirm that a deal for Youkilis is in works though "not complete.'' Can also confirm he was lifted as precaution.
   65. TVerik - Dr. Velocity Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:31 PM (#4164969)
I think Melancon has an extremely visible "shirt tucked in under pants" thing. It's bizarrely fascinating to me.
   66. TVerik - Dr. Velocity Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:32 PM (#4164972)
Is that his underwear?
   67. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:33 PM (#4164974)
Youkilis to the A's for Reddick? ;)
   68. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:41 PM (#4164988)
I just saw the replay of Youk's removal from the game.

I never bought into "he's a dick" whatever that went on here by some folks. Seeing him on "Small Talk" showed a very nice side of him, and it seemed genuine. (I readily admit I enjoy that segment. Kids and ballplayers. It's better than Jenny Dell).

I'll miss him, and I appreciate all his contributions to the team I root for.
   69. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:42 PM (#4164989)
I'm upset. I don't want him to go.
   70. Joel W Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:47 PM (#4165000)
I'm gonna miss the guy, definitely.
   71. Joel W Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:49 PM (#4165005)
Apparently traded to the White Sox.
   72. Chip Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:54 PM (#4165019)
Still want to know WTF the White Sox have to offer.
   73. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:54 PM (#4165020)
I have tears in my eyes, too. I hope the news of who they got for him doesn't make it worse.
   74. Dan Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:56 PM (#4165026)
I have tears in my eyes, too. I hope the news of who they got for him doesn't make it worse.

It will. They're going to sell him for pennies on the dollar and he's going to produce for the White Sox at an all-star level.
   75. Joel W Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:57 PM (#4165029)
It will.
   76. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: June 24, 2012 at 05:02 PM (#4165045)
####### imbeciles.
