Stupid Wilpon. Again, no meaningful games in September.

Steve Trachsel = CY Young #########!

Here's the official word on the callups:

Willie Randolph announced this afternoon that Brian Bannister, Philip Humber, Ricky Ledee, Lastings Milledge, Mike Pelfrey and Kelly Stinnett would join the big-league team as the September call-ups, along with already arrived Heath Bell and Royce Ring.

No Fonzie. I'm guessing Rubin didn't include Williams because it was already assumed he is coming up.

They'll have to clear two 40-man roster spots for Ledee and Stinnett. Personally, I have no idea why they are bringing Ledee back up. Here's the choices:

Matt Lindstrom
Henry Owens
Steve Schmoll
Alay Soler
Ruben Gotay

Schmoll will definitely be one. As for the second, well, it will be interesting.

We won't be hearing any "Laaaaaarrrrrrrrrrry" chants. JD Drew... I mean Chipper is out for the next week with an oblique strain.
   5. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: September 04, 2006 at 06:37 PM (#2167237)
Actually, there are only 39 on the 40-man at this point, so Schmoll would be the only casualty.

I don't get why they would bring back Ledee. He's obviously not needed for the playoff roster. Why not throw the fans a bone and bring Fonzie up, give him his own day.

Great. Now David Wright is the best 3rd baseman active in the series.
   7. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: September 04, 2006 at 07:48 PM (#2167289)
Kevin Mulvey made his third start for Binghamton today. He went six innings and allowed only 2 unearned runs. He gave up 4 hits and one walk in those six innings. He struck out one. He lowered his ERA to 1.35.
   8. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: September 04, 2006 at 08:06 PM (#2167298)
Phil Humber made his 6th start for Binghamton today. He allowed one run in 6 innings. He gave up 2 hits and did not walk a batter. He struck out 4. He has lowered his ERA to 2.88.

Humber has really had a great return for TJ surgery. In all likelihood, he'll be ready to help the Mets sometime next season.
   9. Bob Koo Posted: September 04, 2006 at 08:17 PM (#2167303)
Yeah, I'm pretty excited about Humber. Sounds like he's the real deal and has plus secondary pitches. Can't wait to see him pitch in spring training 2007.
   10. Bob Koo Posted: September 04, 2006 at 09:15 PM (#2167338)
Is Feliciano the best LOOGY in baseball? His numbers vs. lefties:
104 AB, 24 H (.231 AVG), 4 2B, 2 HR, 3 BB, 40 K, .264 OBP/.327 SLG

Those are pretty sick. So are these numbers:
150 AB, 37 H (.247 AVG), 8 2B, 1 HR, 6 BB, 26 K, .272 OBP/.320 SLG

That, of course, is Chad Bradford vs. righties. I love our bullpen.
   11. Ignatius J. Reilly Posted: September 04, 2006 at 09:29 PM (#2167350)
82 AB, 14 H, (.171 AVG), 2 2B, 1 HR, 9 BB, 21 K, .261 OBP/.232 SLG

Macay McBride vs. lefties...I imagine we could play this game all afternoon however because of the sample sizes.
   12. Corn On Ty Cobb Posted: September 04, 2006 at 10:01 PM (#2167369)
Exactly how important is a good bullpen?

Runs scored:
Mets 727 (2nd in the NL)
Braves 716 (3rd in the NL)

OPS:
Mets .789 (3rd in the NL)
Braves .794 (1st in the NL)

Starters ERA
Mets 4.74 (10th in the NL)
Braves 4.72 (9th in the NL)

Bullpen ERA
Mets 3.06 (1st in the NL)
Braves 4.70 (15th in the NL)

-The Braves have 20 more losses than the Mets. No, the 'pen isn't responsible for all that ails them, but still... pretty damn staggering.
   13. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: September 04, 2006 at 10:27 PM (#2167381)
The Mets do have the advantage in team EQA, .270 to .267, so the Met offense is probably a little better than those numbers indicate. That said, the point made in post 11 certainly stands. It is remarkable that the Mets are probably going to improve their record by 15 despite a rotation that has seen its performance decline so much. Improving the rotation next year has to be Minaya's goal this offseason.
   14. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: September 04, 2006 at 10:30 PM (#2167385)
I meant the point in post 12.
   15. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: September 04, 2006 at 10:30 PM (#2167388)
Exactly how important is a good bullpen?
The Met pen isn't merely good; it's great and deep. Heath Bell would have closed for the Braves at some point this year and he can't even get a sniff with the Mets.
   16. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: September 04, 2006 at 10:35 PM (#2167394)
Willie Randolph > Bobby Cox.
   17. Ignatius J. Reilly Posted: September 04, 2006 at 10:52 PM (#2167404)
Heath Bell would have closed for the Braves at some point this year

Maybe for a couple games like Ray or Sosa, but certainly not for more than a week.

Since June 1st of 2005, he has been pretty awful.

5.27 ERA, 49.1 IP, 67 hits, 34 runs (29 Earned), 41 strikeouts, 16 walks, and 4 homers. (Provided by Russlan)

As bad as the Braves pen has been Bell is no better than Paronto and Ray (who have been suprisingly useful for minor league fodder). Pitchers such as Ray, Bell, Paronto, and Yates are perfectly fine to chew up low-leverage innings while making 300k a year. The Braves problem has been lacking a Sanchez and Heilman (both of whom would have been closing at some point) to complement Wickman, who has been spectacular. While not having anyone who could close for the first three plus months didn't cost the Braves the division, it probably will result in them missing the playoffs.

   42. Banta Posted: September 04, 2006 at 11:28 PM (#2167445)
And that's why Trachsel sucks. A four pitch walk to Frenchie. That's just mindboggling.

   52. Banta Posted: September 04, 2006 at 11:34 PM (#2167461)
Jesus, I glanced away for a second and Green was already out.

I have to admit that I was totally wrong to this point about Green. He looks as roasted as everyone said that he was.
   53. Banta Posted: September 04, 2006 at 11:37 PM (#2167463)
And by totally wrong, I didn't mean I thought he would be good, but I thought that he could bounceback to hit 350/450. The way he looks now, I doubt that. His batspeed (and power) looks completely gone.
   54. Raskolnikov Posted: September 04, 2006 at 11:37 PM (#2167465)

Well, all credit to Trachsel for getting out of that with as little damage as humanly possible. That could have been way, WAY worse. Horrible defense, plus getting squeezed by the ump? Two runs is nearly miraculous.
