Question for Cardinal fans. I have not been follwoing the team that closely. Is Weaver someone who would be starting games in the playoffs? Just wondering. If so, I feel a lot better about our rotation.
   2. greenback needs a ride, not ammo Posted: August 22, 2006 at 09:42 PM (#2152398)
It depends on whether the opponent has any kind of left-handed hitting, because Weaver's pretty much helpless against them.
   3. Raskolnikov Posted: August 22, 2006 at 10:14 PM (#2152438)
Preston Wilson is with the Cards?!!? (choking with laughter)..
   4. Urban Faber Posted: August 22, 2006 at 10:35 PM (#2152471)
And Shawn Green is officially a Met.
   5. Raskolnikov Posted: August 22, 2006 at 10:38 PM (#2152477)
The Gods punish me for my hubris.
   6. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: August 22, 2006 at 10:39 PM (#2152478)
I really don't like this deal. If the Mets aren't getting at least 7 million dollars for next year, this is a disaster.
   7. AJMcCringleberry Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:08 PM (#2152532)
Isn't Shawn Green the worst defensive outfielder in the league? This is terrible.
   8. Sam M. Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:14 PM (#2152542)
As I said in the thread on the deal, the only good thing: presumably, no Michael Tucker for the post-season. That has to be good.
   9. Old Matt Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:14 PM (#2152544)
They got Green? Wtf.
   10. Sam M. Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:15 PM (#2152549)
Can we lobby the Commissioner to veto the deal in the best interests of our collective psyches? Can't hurt . . . .
   11. Old Matt Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:16 PM (#2152550)
Whoa Maine! Pooholes is no match!
   12. AJMcCringleberry Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:16 PM (#2152551)
Maine!
   13. Hysterical & Useless Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:16 PM (#2152552)
Not a bad inning for J Maine...
   14. Bob Koo Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:16 PM (#2152553)
Maine keeps rolling...
   15. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:16 PM (#2152554)
Maine K's Pujols. He touched 94 in that AB.
   16. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:16 PM (#2152555)
Maine just made Pujols look silly on three pitches there.
   17. Sam M. Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:16 PM (#2152556)
Maine has me feeling happy. But I'll be missing most of the game tonight -- hot date.
   18. Old Matt Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:19 PM (#2152561)
And Castro is out for the year?

And Meche was scratched from his start tonight?
   19. Urban Faber Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:19 PM (#2152562)
At least Glavine is OK.
   20. Hysterical & Useless Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:20 PM (#2152565)
Why can't Duncan run more like his old man?
   21. Bob Koo Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:23 PM (#2152571)
So if Green's on the team.. what does our postseason bench look like, once Floyd is back?

Franco, Woodward, Castro/Difelice, Chavez, Milledge, Tucker, Ledee

I think Ledee is the one to be voted off the island at this point...
   22. Raskolnikov Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:26 PM (#2152578)
If Maine is not in the playoff rotation, I will kidnap Willie and put a clone in his place.
   23. Old Matt Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:28 PM (#2152585)
John Maine is good.
   24. Raskolnikov Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:29 PM (#2152587)
At this rate, Maine will be starting game 1 of the playoffs.
   25. Old Matt Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:29 PM (#2152588)
30!
   26. AJMcCringleberry Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:29 PM (#2152589)
Delgadit! 399!
   27. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:30 PM (#2152590)
So do you guys still wish we had Mike Jacobs?
   28. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:30 PM (#2152591)
Saw that one coming a mile away.
   29. Raskolnikov Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:31 PM (#2152596)
DELGADO!!!!!
   30. Raskolnikov Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:34 PM (#2152602)
So do you guys still wish we had Mike Jacobs?

Jacobs who? Actually, it's the emergence of Carp tearing up FSL that has quenched my fleeting infatuation of that Jacobs fellow. 1B is set for many years to come.
   31. Hysterical & Useless Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:36 PM (#2152607)
Has anyone tried the "Real-Time Game Chatter?"
   32. Raskolnikov Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:38 PM (#2152614)
I think Maine is my hero.
   33. AJMcCringleberry Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:39 PM (#2152615)
So do you guys still wish we had Mike Jacobs?

Who was saying they'd rather have Jacobs than Delgado this year?
   34. Banta Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:39 PM (#2152617)
Well, I'm not that pissed about the Green trade. It's only money. Now, if the deal prevents them from upgrading in the outfield next year, sure I'll be a bit more pissed, but this move in itself isn't terrible.

Plus, there's got to be a chance, albeit however small, that Green returns to form a bit. He's still not THAT old.
   35. Old Matt Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:40 PM (#2152620)
Maine is good.
   36. Banta Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:40 PM (#2152621)
And John Maine rules.
   37. AJMcCringleberry Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:41 PM (#2152624)
Maine is awesome.
   38. Raskolnikov Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:41 PM (#2152625)
Now, if the deal prevents them from upgrading in the outfield next year, sure I'll be a bit more pissed, but this move in itself isn't terrible.

How about this year? How about Alou?
   39. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:41 PM (#2152626)
This game is going by quickly. It's only been a half hour and we are already through 2 and a half inning.
   40. Hysterical & Useless Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:42 PM (#2152628)
3 innings, 10 balls 28 strikes for Maine.
   41. Raskolnikov Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:42 PM (#2152630)
Maine is putting on a clinic.
   42. Chris Dial Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:45 PM (#2152642)
We couldn't possibly have gotten Green. That can't be within our budget...<eye roll>
   43. Raskolnikov Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:45 PM (#2152643)
This is bizarre, Weaver doesn't suck.
   44. Banta Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:47 PM (#2152652)
How about this year? How about Alou?

Yeah, Alou would have been better. Hell, keeping Nady would have been better. But there's not much that we can do about that now and the deal based on the deal's own merits isn't that bad. If Green sucks, I'm sure the Mets won't use him that much. Management has shown a willingness to change if something isn't working, I don't see why this will be any different.

Once again, it's by no means a good deal, but it's really nothing to get worked up over. I guess it just comes down to for me, if you don't give up any talent in the deal, then I'm not that mad. Plus, whatever increase this has on the budget, the Mets can afford it next year, since they're going to win the World Series this year!
   45. Chris Dial Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:48 PM (#2152653)
I don't like the Yankees, but I like seeing the BoSox implosion this weekend.
   46. greenback needs a ride, not ammo Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:49 PM (#2152655)
We couldn't possibly have gotten Green. That can't be within our budget...<eye roll>

Well, that's the first agreeable thing I've read since the game started.

This is bizarre, Weaver doesn't suck.

Don't worry. Marquis and Mulder do.
   47. AJMcCringleberry Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:49 PM (#2152657)
They had Beltran played perfectly.
   48. Old Matt Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:52 PM (#2152662)
Wow. Maine hit that wall again.
   49. AJMcCringleberry Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:52 PM (#2152663)
I guess he made Pujols mad after that first AB.
   50. Chris Dial Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:53 PM (#2152664)
Well, I guess I shouldn't have left the room.
   51. Banta Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:53 PM (#2152666)
Well... this second time through the order stuff is sort of concerning.
   52. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:53 PM (#2152667)
<Willy> That happened quickly. </Willy>
   53. greenback needs a ride, not ammo Posted: August 22, 2006 at 11:54 PM (#2152670)
Aaron Miles is the straw that stirs the drink. The next Brian Doyle.
   54. AJMcCringleberry Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:01 AM (#2152683)
Can you give two errors on that play?
   55. Banta Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:07 AM (#2152699)
Bah. Woodward sucks. Valentin needs to get healthy soon.
   56. AJMcCringleberry Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:08 AM (#2152702)
That sucked.
   57. Banta Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:12 AM (#2152708)
WOW, LODUCA CAUGHT THE BALL.

And that wasn't even easy!

Looks like the D'backs got MacLane. Seeing as how the Mets were never gonna use him, that's ok. But, I hope now that the D'backs kicked in A LOT of money, because otherwise, this trade is looking worse.
   58. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:12 AM (#2152709)
Michael Tucker is hitting .308/.406/.500 in 30 plate appearances. Obviously, the power isn't going to stay but he did post a .380 OBP in AAA.
   59. cardsfanboy Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:12 AM (#2152710)
Weaver does suck, but he's looking better each time out there. And for you tortured mets fans, you have to understand that there is small grumblings for the cardinals to make jorge sosa a starter for us.

The cardinals signing of Preston Wilson was basically a minor league contract and he hasn't been bad or good, but he does stabilize the outfield while Edmonds is out.
   60. Banta Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:16 AM (#2152720)
Well, Maine's lost it. There's no way Pujols doesn't hit a grand slam here.
   61. Bob Koo Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:16 AM (#2152721)
Walk the bases loaded to get to Pujols! Great strategy!
   62. AJMcCringleberry Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:17 AM (#2152722)
I don't like this situation.
   63. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:17 AM (#2152723)
How come you guys ##### like there's no tomorrow when LoDuca screws up a defensive play but make no comments when he makes a fantastic play? That was as good as it gets right there.
   64. Banta Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:18 AM (#2152726)
See guys, some things are easy to call.
   65. Hysterical & Useless Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:18 AM (#2152727)
Well, I'm done for tonight. What happened to the guy who pitched the first 3 innings?
   66. AJMcCringleberry Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:18 AM (#2152729)
Perfect.
   67. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:18 AM (#2152733)
Damn. He's good.
   68. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:21 AM (#2152742)
Throwing back-to-back sliders to Pujols isn't a good idea. Personally, I would have walked him.
   69. Bob Koo Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:22 AM (#2152748)
Well, this performance should temper our enthusiasm of Maine. It doesn't seem like he had the right plan of which hitters to work around and which hitters to go after when he got into trouble. (Hint: Don't go after the guy who won the NL MVP last year.)
   70. Banta Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:23 AM (#2152750)
Personally, I would have walked him.

I think I would have too.
   71. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:24 AM (#2152754)
Maine has given up 9 homers in 55 innings. I love agressive pitching as much as anyone but he probably needs to throw more curveballs. You can't challenge hitters in the zone as much as Maine does and not give up a lot of homers.
   72. AJMcCringleberry Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:27 AM (#2152760)
Rally time!
   73. Banta Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:27 AM (#2152761)
The thing about Maine, is unless he has excellent control, he'll get lit up pretty bad from time to time. He's really no better than a forth starter. I've watched every game he's pitched while he was doing well and truthfully, I have no idea how he was doing with that mediocre stuff. His fastball isn't that impressive, and his secondary pitches even less so. So, unless he has Madduxesque control, his ceiling is very limited. And I don't think that's reasonable to expect.
   74. greenback needs a ride, not ammo Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:28 AM (#2152763)
We could have a Lilly Moment brewing here.
   75. Bob Koo Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:30 AM (#2152771)
Banta, your progression from post #36 to post #51 to post #73 is pretty funny.
   76. AJMcCringleberry Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:32 AM (#2152776)
#400!!!
   77. Banta Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:32 AM (#2152777)

400!!!!!!!!!
   80. greenback needs a ride, not ammo Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:33 AM (#2152782)
Helpless against LHB.
   81. Old Matt Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:33 AM (#2152784)
That ball was crushed.
   82. Banta Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:34 AM (#2152786)
True enough, Bob. I didn't want to criticize Maine as long as he was succeeding, but watching him, during his successful run, I didn't understand how he was getting the hitters to swing and miss so much. As long as he kept on doing it though, I wasn't gonna try and figure it out. Now...
   83. Old Matt Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:37 AM (#2152791)
Mota Time!
   84. AJMcCringleberry Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:38 AM (#2152792)
Mota time.
   85. Banta Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:38 AM (#2152794)
Who did Mota replace on the roster?
   86. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:38 AM (#2152795)
To be fair, Banta has said before that he is concerned about Maine.
   87. AJMcCringleberry Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:39 AM (#2152797)
I think Ring.
   88. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:40 AM (#2152801)
I hope both Carlos are on during October.

BTW, assuming everybody's healthy, we could be really damn good against RHP:

1. Reyes
2. LoDuca
3. Beltran
4. Delgado
5. Wright
6. Floyd
7. Green
8. Stache

And really against LHB, we shouldn't be that bad:

1. Reyes
2. LoDuca
3. Beltran
4. Delgado
5. Wright
6. Valentin/Fonzie?
7. Floyd?
8. Milledge
   89. Old Matt Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:40 AM (#2152802)
Mota sucks.
   90. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:41 AM (#2152807)
Mota, so far, looks like complete shite.
   91. Banta Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:42 AM (#2152808)
To be fair, Banta has said before that he is concerned about Maine.

Yep. I'm really concerned about him facing REAL competition, because let's face it... the Mets haven't played a real team in awhile. The Cardinals are legit competition and Maine got smoked.

I've just been skeptical of our "good" pitching since interleague play. Alay Soler looked alright until he faced real teams, remember?
   92. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:44 AM (#2152814)
Oh damn, the DH lineups would be pretty sweet if you add Chavez as the LF/RF against RHP, and Franco playing 1b against LHP.
   93. Banta Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:45 AM (#2152818)
OFF, I think it's possible that Milledge won't make the postseason roster at this point.
   94. AJMcCringleberry Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:46 AM (#2152820)
2 K's.
   95. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:47 AM (#2152823)
Maine faced the Phils twice. And didn't he face the Marlins and Atlanta too? Those teams have good offenses.

Mota's splitter is a plus pitch. Add that to his fastball, and that's two more plus pitches than Heath Bell.
   96. AJMcCringleberry Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:47 AM (#2152826)
That's a nasty changeup.
   97. Banta Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:48 AM (#2152827)
Well, I'm glad that Peterson got to spend 15 minutes with Mota before the game.
   98. AJMcCringleberry Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:49 AM (#2152828)
Or was it a splitter? Either way it's nasty.
   99. Old Matt Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:49 AM (#2152829)
Okay. Hi real Mota.
   100. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: August 23, 2006 at 12:50 AM (#2152831)
Despite posts 89-90, Mota looked overpowering in that inning.
