If Freddy Garcia has another bad outing today, I'll be officially worried about him. Last time out, he was just flat and had bad velocity.

The Sox don't seem too worried about him, so for now we're chalking it up to difficulties warming up on Tuesday. We shall see...

Chicago is learning that repeating might be hard.

If winning championships wasn't so hard, 2005 wouldn't be so special. I'm hoping the Sox do well this season, and I'm not happy when they lose, but I don't have that sick feeling when they lose anymore.
   2. WalkOffIBB Posted: April 10, 2006 at 04:10 PM (#1953118)
I am excited about this series, as I am looking forward to the Tigers playing against a bit more difficult opponent.

Also, the Tigers are now only 77 wins away from a winning season.
   3. VG Posted: April 10, 2006 at 04:15 PM (#1953126)
I'll be glad when this series is over just because they are all day games. The Sox did the same thing last week, so I don't mean to make that sound like a complaint about the Tigers. I'm glad that the day games will become rarer. We're not Cubs fans, after all.

I'm going to check the MLB.tv replay of this game tonight to see how García looks. I didn't get to see his start last week. I am concerned about his loss of velocity, too.

I'm back on the radio program, so I'll be listening today. Too bad Ernie Harwell isn't doing games anymore, because that'd be a pleasant way to avoid Singleton and Farmer.

I'll be glad when this series is over just because they are all day games.

No kidding. I spent a lot of money on Extra Innings and I won't be able to use it for the first three days.
   6. VG Posted: April 10, 2006 at 04:46 PM (#1953167)
Maybe it's good that I won't have to watch Mackowiak play center today in one of the biggest outfields the Sox will play in this season.

I need to get a DVR.
   7. Mark Edward Posted: April 10, 2006 at 04:53 PM (#1953173)
Podsednik-Mackowiak-Dye.

That scares me about as much as Ozuna-Podsednik-Mackowiak. I feel sorry for Freddy Garcia.

I wouldn't mind if the Sox went after Nook Logan. Seeing as though he plays for Detroit, though, I doubt the teams would do an in-division trade like that.
   8. KDub's CellPiece (BLtDH) Posted: April 10, 2006 at 04:59 PM (#1953189)
I continue to be frustrated with Guillen's use of both Cintron and Mackowiak. Cintron is effective because he hits left handed pitching, yet I believe all his ABs are from the left side of the plate. And Mackowiak has played way to much CF for me already.

And who does Gload have to blow to get in the lineup?
   9. VG Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:02 PM (#1953191)
And who does Gload have to blow to get in the lineup?

He remains the only position player who hasn't started a game. If I have to see Ozuna play left again before Gload gets a start...
   10. KDub's CellPiece (BLtDH) Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:05 PM (#1953197)
looks like a pretty decent crowd in detroit today. that's cool
   11. KDub's CellPiece (BLtDH) Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:06 PM (#1953198)
well....a decent crowd for detroit anyways
   12. Don Guillote (The Cheat) Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:07 PM (#1953200)
Bonderman is actually a pitcher I would expect BA to have some success against. It's the Paul Byrds and Jamie Moyers who will really give him fits.
   13. VG Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:08 PM (#1953203)
Way to juice the 3-1 pitch, Pods.
   14. KDub's CellPiece (BLtDH) Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:08 PM (#1953204)
nice 3-1 hack Pods
   15. chemdoc Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:11 PM (#1953206)
Lay off Podsednik...at least he's hitting the ball.
   16. Don Guillote (The Cheat) Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:12 PM (#1953210)
Jeremy Bonderman is throwing a perfect game!

/I'm starting the jinxing early cuz I have a bad feeling about this.
   17. VG Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:13 PM (#1953211)
Lay off Podsednik...at least he's hitting the ball.

I have Bonderman on my fantasy team. If the Sox are going to make outs with the bases empty, they should be strikeouts.
   18. KDub's CellPiece (BLtDH) Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:16 PM (#1953216)
have a day Pods
   19. Kirby Kyle Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:16 PM (#1953217)
Chicago is learning that repeating might be hard.

To me, this is the most remarkable statistic in baseball: The last 26 World Series have been won by 19 different teams.
   20. Don Guillote (The Cheat) Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:16 PM (#1953218)
The speed gun on Comcast in not-so-conspicuously absent. My untrained eye says that Garcia's at least throwing 89. Throwing mostly fastballs right now. They got good movement.

Hanging breaking ball to Pudge. Pods plays it into two bases. Man he's useless.
   21. KDub's CellPiece (BLtDH) Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:17 PM (#1953219)
joe crede!!!
   22. Don Guillote (The Cheat) Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:17 PM (#1953220)
All your hit are belong to Crede!
   23. VG Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:18 PM (#1953222)
If anyone is watching on TV, how does García look today? Is his velocity any better?
   24. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:18 PM (#1953223)
Hot diggity, Cooter™.
   25. Don Guillote (The Cheat) Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:20 PM (#1953227)
Jeremy Bonderman is throwing a shutout!
   26. VG Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:20 PM (#1953228)
Cheat, thank you for having a premonition about my question.

Way to go, Paulie.

Attaway to jinx, Cheat.

The Tigers have the best home uniforms in the game. Bar none.

I have Bonderman on my fantasy team. If the Sox are going to make outs with the bases empty, they should be strikeouts.

I have Konerko on my team. Not surprisingly, I'm doing very poorly after the first week.
   32. KDub's CellPiece (BLtDH) Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:25 PM (#1953241)
mackowiak sucks
   33. VG Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:25 PM (#1953243)
chemdoc, I have Shelton, and I still lost 3-6-1 in a head-to-head. Zito and Daniel Cabrera killed me.

Gee, why would they work around Cooter™ to get to Mackowiak? </sarcasm>
   34. KDub's CellPiece (BLtDH) Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:31 PM (#1953256)
If anyone is watching on TV, how does García look today?

I'm watching - I'd say he looks to be throwing a little harder than last week...although by no means is he throwing hard. His location is better but his curveball has sucked.
   35. KDub's CellPiece (BLtDH) Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:32 PM (#1953257)
like i said...his curveball has sucked.
   36. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:33 PM (#1953259)
Great. Now we have Second-Inning Freddy.
   37. chemdoc Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:34 PM (#1953260)
So what's the record for team HRs in the first 7 games of a season?
   38. WalkOffIBB Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:35 PM (#1953261)
Nice one by Monroe. Nice to see a homerun with runners on.
   39. Don Guillote (The Cheat) Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:37 PM (#1953265)
LOL @ Hawk
WAY BACK! HE LOOKS UP! YOU and that ball is foul.

Thome!
   41. Don Guillote (The Cheat) Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:40 PM (#1953271)
Hawk got that call right.
   42. VG Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:40 PM (#1953272)
Thome laughs last.
   43. chemdoc Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:43 PM (#1953278)
I believe Thome is short for "THe Offense is ME".
   44. ChadBradfordWannabe Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:44 PM (#1953280)
that was AWESOME! What a freakin bomb....
I don't see the gun, but Garcia seems to be throwing harder today, muhc harder. Then again, he sat at 84 last time....
   45. ChadBradfordWannabe Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:46 PM (#1953282)
well, there ya go...94 mph from Freddy
   46. More Dewey is Always Good Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:46 PM (#1953284)
that was AWESOME! What a freakin bomb....

Was that another long homer? His first three were just huge.

He really hits the ball a long way, doesn't he?
   47. Don Guillote (The Cheat) Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:47 PM (#1953286)
If the Sox are going to hit 200 HR for the 7th straight season, Thome's gonna have to pick up the pace.
   48. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:47 PM (#1953287)
Eric Chavez better squeeze that Gold Glove a bit tighter.
   49. ChadBradfordWannabe Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:47 PM (#1953288)
I'm a Tigers fan and all, but listening to Hawk makes me sick enough to almost turn this off. WTF does "hang/whiff'em" mean?
   50. ChadBradfordWannabe Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:49 PM (#1953290)
it wasn't only a long homer, but a high/long homer. That must've looked awesome live...
   51. Don Guillote (The Cheat) Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:50 PM (#1953292)
On the inevitable Hawk sucks note. Thanks for that CBW.

I really liked the Tigers announcers last year, whoever the heck they were/are. They weren't the best crew in baseball, but they told it like is, and brought some enthusiasm to the game. They weren't boring I guess is what I'm trying to say.
   52. More Dewey is Always Good Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:51 PM (#1953294)
WTF does "hang/whiff'em" mean?

It means he hit it hard but right at someone/defender made a terrific play.

And yes, we're all tired of Hawk. I think the disclaimer should go back up.
   53. Jimmy P Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:52 PM (#1953298)
Am I the only one that is worried Podsednik is a lot worse off than everyone thinks? Without his speed, he's useless, we're talking Timo levels.
   54. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:53 PM (#1953301)
Jerome Bettis threw out the first pitch? I didn't know he had Detroit ties. Nosirree.
   55. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:54 PM (#1953302)

that was an awesome curveball to maggs
   60. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:57 PM (#1953311)
Farmer's saying Crede missed the tag on Young. Does Hawk agree?
   61. Don Guillote (The Cheat) Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:58 PM (#1953313)
Dimitri Young just stole a base because he can't slide. Throw beat him, but Crede only tagged the batting helmet that came flying off, thankfully, without D'mitri's head in it.
   62. KDub's CellPiece (BLtDH) Posted: April 10, 2006 at 05:59 PM (#1953314)
big strikeout...great sequence by freddy

Phew. Got Shelton.
   64. ChadBradfordWannabe Posted: April 10, 2006 at 06:02 PM (#1953321)
that was an awesome curveball to maggs

little known baseball dictionary definition...

2 almost identical curveballs

1) hanger= the one that is hit hard
2) bender, yakker, knee-buckler= the one the hitter takes

called curveball strikes cross the plate waist-high, hence most/all curves that are called strikes are "hangers."
   65. VG Posted: April 10, 2006 at 06:02 PM (#1953323)
I think the disclaimer should go back up.

I have decided that I am going to pretend as though Ken Harrelson does not exist. I haven't gotten it down 100% yet, but I'm getting there.

Am I the only one that is worried Podsednik is a lot worse off than everyone thinks?

I doubt you're alone in that. I figure it just ensures that the Sox won't keep him beyond this year. In the meantime, they'll just try the Jerry Owens Experience a little sooner if Pods continues to suck.
   66. My guest will be Jermaine Allensworth Posted: April 10, 2006 at 06:05 PM (#1953326)
Monroe's hitting the ball hard. I liked it better when "Craig Monroe" and "belts" only appeared together when talking about petty theft.

Thanks for the info. I always thought that a hanger was a curve that didn't break properly.

Well, see, that's the double standard I guess. What I sometimes hate about baseball is how results-oriented it can get. When you watch the replay on the Craig Monroe bomb, check out the pitch. It's an 0-0 curveball that breaks well, is a lowish strike, and it's really a decent pitch. Monroe was looking for a pitch in a particular zone and he got it. That same 0-0 curveball, had he thrown it on 1-2 after throwing a fastball up and in to back him off, would've been a knee-bender, of the "he gone, nasty bender" variety.

I called that one... Here's what I wrote on my site in the third inning

Just as last game I thought the gun was slow, it appears this gun is fast.

It's also interesting that the gun didn't show up until Garcia's last few pitches in the 2nd.

He's throwing harder than he was last game, but he's not hitting 94 consistently [as the gun says]. I don't think he's ever done that in a Sox uniform.

Terrible sequence by Garcia there to Shelton. 3 pitches nowhere near the zone. Then he lays one in there on 3-0. He should have just pitched around him.
