SWEEEEEEEP.
   2. Raskolnikov Posted: June 11, 2006 at 07:59 PM (#2060112)
The main goal of this game is to see Pedro get back to dominant form. There hasn't been too much to worry about with this team, but a Pedro not at his best would make the run towards the playoffs more difficult.
   3. Joshemy Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:31 PM (#2060145)
Pedro is the awesomeness.
   4. AJMcCringleberry Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:33 PM (#2060148)
Dammit, game's not on EI again.
   5. Bob Koo Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:42 PM (#2060155)
A couple questions:

1) Henry Owens keeps dominating. I don't understand. Isn't he still working on his secondary pitches? Is it possible to strike out over two an inning (even in AA) with just a fastball?

2) Is it too early to start digging the Braves' grave?
   6. AJMcCringleberry Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:42 PM (#2060156)
Reyes walk!
   7. Joshemy Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:43 PM (#2060157)
Walk!
   8. Sam M. Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:43 PM (#2060158)
Geez, AGAIN we get the Diamondbacks broadcast on MLB.tv??? That's every game in this series! Enough is enough.
   9. Sam M. Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:45 PM (#2060161)
Keep runnin', Jose. Who cares what they say about steals over on that other thread?
   10. Joshemy Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:46 PM (#2060162)
Steal!
   11. Bob Koo Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:46 PM (#2060163)
It doesn't seem like Ortiz can get his breaking stuff over.
   12. Raskolnikov Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:46 PM (#2060165)
1) Apparently Owens throws a fastball that can touch 100. He also throws with a motion like a catcher so that it comes from behind his head. So 100MPH + unable to pickup ball coming out of pitching motion = unhittable pitch.

2) I think the Braves are done. Their starting pitching outside of Hudson/Smoltz is poor and their bullpen stinks. Unless Schuerholz can pull 4-5 good pitchers from nowhere, I don't see how the Braves can keep up with us.
   13. Bob Koo Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:46 PM (#2060166)
I love it when Chavez drag bunts.
   14. Joshemy Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:47 PM (#2060168)
Endy drag bunt!
   15. Joshemy Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:49 PM (#2060172)
The DBacks are completely falling apart.
   16. Bob Koo Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:49 PM (#2060173)
Don't let up, fellas. Step on their necks early.
   17. Sam M. Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:50 PM (#2060175)
The Snakes' defense has really hurt them the past couple of days. That was bad on Hudson's part.
   18. Chris Dial Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:50 PM (#2060176)
This game isn't on EI?

WTF? Anyone recall FSAZ channel on DTV?
   19. Raskolnikov Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:50 PM (#2060179)
What happened to Russ Ortiz? He used to be a decent pitcher who could give you a quality start.
   20. Sam M. Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:51 PM (#2060182)
Nice agressive baserunning by Chavez. Go, go, go.
   21. Bob Koo Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:51 PM (#2060183)
Thanks, R. for the info. Now I gotta find video of Owens' motion.
   22. Sam M. Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:54 PM (#2060186)
Wright swung at ball four in his eyes.
   23. AJMcCringleberry Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:55 PM (#2060187)
Beltran is great.
   24. Joshemy Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:55 PM (#2060188)
Woody!
   25. Bob Koo Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:55 PM (#2060189)
Way to go, Woody! This team is on fi-ah.
   26. AJMcCringleberry Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:55 PM (#2060190)
Woody!
   27. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:56 PM (#2060191)
Nice AB by Woody.
   28. Sam M. Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:56 PM (#2060192)
Woodie picks up Wright!!! That's just awesome -- gotta love that.
   29. good_ol_gil Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:56 PM (#2060193)
With the way this serirs has gone, you cold see that coming.
   30. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:56 PM (#2060194)
Woody!!!!
   31. Raskolnikov Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:56 PM (#2060195)
With Reyes, Chavez, and Beltran, we have 3 excellent baserunners.
   32. Sam M. Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:57 PM (#2060196)
Finally, Pedro gets some early runs! Now, let's hope he's got his Pedro stuff today.
   33. Raskolnikov Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:58 PM (#2060197)
This team is so well constructed. Woodward is everything that Bill Pecota was supposed to be.
   34. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: June 11, 2006 at 08:59 PM (#2060198)
When Beltran is healthy, he really can do pretty much everything well. It's a joy to watch him play right now.
   35. Raskolnikov Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:00 PM (#2060199)
This is ridiculous. Delgado and Wright fail to deliver and the Mets still put up 3 on the board.
   36. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:01 PM (#2060200)
when i look at the team, they're very well constructed. good pen, solid frontline starters, good lineup, good defense, good bench. the only weakness was the back of the rotation, but it looks like it's coming together.
   37. Raskolnikov Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:03 PM (#2060203)
Over in World Cup, everything has gone to form. Unlike the 2002 WC, it doesn't appear to be that there will be too many surprises advancing.

HUGE game for US vs. Czech Republic.
   38. AJMcCringleberry Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:04 PM (#2060205)
Braves and Phillies lost today, BTW.
   39. Raskolnikov Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:05 PM (#2060207)
It's too bad that Reyes and Chavez don't get on base more consistently. Their skill sets are perfect for 1/2 in the lineup.
   40. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:05 PM (#2060209)
HUGE game for US vs. Czech Republic.

I'm keeping my expectations low, just like in 2002.
   41. Raskolnikov Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:07 PM (#2060211)
C'mon Pedro, you're making this too hard.
   42. Bob Koo Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:08 PM (#2060212)
Wow Endy!!! Castro blocks the plate perfectly!
   43. villainx Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:08 PM (#2060213)
don't run on endy? !
   44. Joshemy Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:08 PM (#2060214)
Ramon Castro shows Paul LoDuca how to block the plate and catch the ball.
   45. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:08 PM (#2060215)
ENDY ####### CHAVEZ!

weren't people ######## about him getting the spot on the roster over diaz?
   46. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:08 PM (#2060216)
Coming into this year, I did not realize this, but Endy Chavez has a freaking great arm.
   47. Flynn Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:09 PM (#2060217)
Endy is your daddy.
   48. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:09 PM (#2060218)
When things are going well, they are going well. Castro does an excellent job blocking the plate. Beautiful.
   49. Raskolnikov Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:09 PM (#2060219)
I heart Endy Chavez.
   50. AJMcCringleberry Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:09 PM (#2060220)
ENDY!
   51. Chris Dial Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:09 PM (#2060221)
I can't believe how annoying this is.
   52. good_ol_gil Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:10 PM (#2060222)
LoDuca would have def droppd that.
   53. Raskolnikov Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:11 PM (#2060225)
If we could morph Chavez's defense/speed + Floyd's power + Nady's lefty mashing, we would have Willie Mays.
   54. villainx Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:12 PM (#2060226)
Happy birthday Mr. Reyes!
   55. Raskolnikov Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:12 PM (#2060227)
Alright! Milledge showing off his Biggio skills.
   56. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:13 PM (#2060228)
i'm sure this has been seen, but *swoon*

   57. villainx Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:14 PM (#2060229)
Morph Chavez's ability to stay healthy too.
   58. villainx Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:15 PM (#2060231)
If we could morph Chavez's defense/speed + Floyd's power + Nady's lefty mashing, we would have Willie Mays.

Beltran?
   59. villainx Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:19 PM (#2060236)
K!
   60. Chris Dial Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:19 PM (#2060237)
Chavez' defense has been unreal. He's been nearly perfect.

In the fluke season he hits well (hey, they happen), he's pretty good.
   61. villainx Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:20 PM (#2060238)
No Hernandez, but Darling sounds alright.
   62. Chris Dial Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:20 PM (#2060239)
And Pedro avoided the first inning HR that has plagued him this season.
   63. villainx Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:21 PM (#2060240)
Pedro is a thing of beauty.
   64. PreservedFish Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:21 PM (#2060241)
If Endy could replicate this season's hitting statistics every year, what type of contract do you think he'd earn as a FA? .290, low 700s OPS, GG defense.
   65. Chris Dial Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:22 PM (#2060242)
Nice quick one for Pedro. Now we're cooking. Let's get a few more runs.
   66. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:23 PM (#2060245)
Wasn't the final game of last year's road series with the D-Backs a 3-2 win by Pedro over Javy Vasquez?
   67. Raskolnikov Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:23 PM (#2060246)
This is too weird. I'm a Mets fan, I need something to angst over.
   68. Raskolnikov Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:27 PM (#2060248)
Down in the minors, Niese struck out 7 over 5IP, no earned runs. He's improving.
   69. villainx Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:27 PM (#2060249)
Delgado sub .250 is something to angst over.
   70. Raskolnikov Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:29 PM (#2060251)
2B and possibly 1B are positions that the Mets will need to address over the next couple of years. I'm still holding out hope that Mike Carp will develop a power spike.
   71. villainx Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:30 PM (#2060252)
Castro should do something good.
   72. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:31 PM (#2060253)
endy'd get a couple mil a year for a team that can take the hit on the offense for a good CF.

and i'm perfectly happy not being angsty.
   73. villainx Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:31 PM (#2060254)
Cripple hitter?
   74. Flynn Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:31 PM (#2060255)
I love how Brennaman is getting pissed at Ortiz.
   75. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:32 PM (#2060256)
Down in the minors, Niese struck out 7 over 5IP, no earned runs. He's improving.
How old is this kid? His WHIP in Hagerstown is less than spectacular, though his HR rate is excellent: None thus far.
   76. villainx Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:33 PM (#2060257)
Nice spot for the Edge.
   77. Sam M. Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:33 PM (#2060259)
Brennaman deserves far better color announcers than they've stuck him with. Far better.
   78. PreservedFish Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:34 PM (#2060260)
Wild pitcher, bases juiced, healthy lead ... Milledge should get a fat pitch here if he's smart
   79. Bob Koo Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:34 PM (#2060261)
That 2-0 pitch was certainly not a strike.
   80. Raskolnikov Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:34 PM (#2060262)

He's 19. A LHP who throws in the low 90's and can touch mid 90's. I think of him as Kazmir-lite.
   81. villainx Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:34 PM (#2060263)
Was that a strike?
   82. Flynn Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:34 PM (#2060264)
Total gift strike there.
   83. Sam M. Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:35 PM (#2060265)
Lastings got really hosed on the 2-0 pitch. Big-time.
   84. Raskolnikov Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:35 PM (#2060266)
I'm thinking this team can win 100.
   85. villainx Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:36 PM (#2060267)
ouch. Lasting wasn't expecting that.
   86. PreservedFish Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:36 PM (#2060268)
On the radio they called it "high strike ... letter high"
   87. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:36 PM (#2060269)
Throws a 3-2 hook? That's just wrong!
   88. AJMcCringleberry Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:36 PM (#2060270)
####, more runs would've been nice.
   89. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:38 PM (#2060271)
You know, that was a smart call by the catcher on the 3-2 pitch. There's no way Lastings can be expecting a curveball in that sitaution. Sure, there's a chance that Ortiz will throw a ball but there's also a chance that Lastings will crush a fastball. With Pedro on deck, that's a good call.
   90. Raskolnikov Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:38 PM (#2060272)
I still like Milledge's approach. Ortiz is living on the edge.
   91. villainx Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:38 PM (#2060273)
On the radio they called it "high strike ... letter high"

i don't mind the height, but it looked outside.
   92. Sam M. Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:40 PM (#2060274)
Delgado is an adventure every time the ball is hit to him at first. Not Piazza like by any means, but not a feeling of security, either . . . .
   93. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:43 PM (#2060275)
I posted this in the last chatter but Delgado is 2nd in the NL in Zone rating. I can't believe that.
   94. villainx Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:43 PM (#2060276)
Sam, I'm pretty sure you like Piazza, but that reference was totally uncalled for.

Pedro must be thinking about something else.
   95. Sam M. Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:43 PM (#2060277)
Well, that kind of sucked.
   96. PreservedFish Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:44 PM (#2060278)
Is zone rating credible? Honest question.

I still have a grudge against any and all defensive statistics since UZR rated Roger Cedeno as an above average CFer in 2003.
   97. Sam M. Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:46 PM (#2060279)
Sam, I'm pretty sure you like Piazza, but that reference was totally uncalled for.

Why? Piazza was the worst first baseman I've ever seen. I was trying to make the point that Delgado is shaky, but not totally horrendous (i.e., Piazza-like). It wasn't meant to be a shot at Piazza as a catcher, if that's what you thought.

How could that 1-2 pitch to DaVanon NOT be a strike if the pitch to Milledge was one???
   98. Dr. Vaux Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:49 PM (#2060281)
Because four-game sweeps are almost impossible.
   99. Sam M. Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:50 PM (#2060282)
What a beautiful change. It's really the only pitch Pedro seems to have strong command of right now.
   100. Chris Dial Posted: June 11, 2006 at 09:51 PM (#2060284)
Is zone rating credible? Honest question.

Yes. I'm a big proponent. It isn't perfect, but it is available and is significantly better than anything available (BPro's defense, Win Shares, or anything else).
