Any preseason takers on Trachsel's ERA being better than RJs on July 1?
   2. TVerik - Dr. Velocity Posted: July 01, 2006 at 02:20 PM (#2083385)
By the way, I have a ReplayTV, so I have to try to figure out the end time of this game now in order to make sure I get it all.

I'm putting the over/under at 5PM, and I'll likely record straight through 'till about 6.
   3. TVerik - Dr. Velocity Posted: July 01, 2006 at 02:35 PM (#2083389)
I've been reading Philip K Dick stories the last week or so.

Do you think it's possible that a robot killed Mariano Rivera while he was in the minors and took his place?
   4. SG Posted: July 01, 2006 at 02:44 PM (#2083391)
Who are you talking to Erik?
   5. TVerik - Dr. Velocity Posted: July 01, 2006 at 02:44 PM (#2083392)
If only there were some kind of magic serum that added miles per hour to a middling reliever's fastball. But that's un-possible.
   6. TVerik - Dr. Velocity Posted: July 01, 2006 at 02:46 PM (#2083393)
I see no reason for others to be in the thread.

Alternately (I told you, I'm in a sci-fi mindset at the moment), the fact that I cannot see them and they aren't responding doesn't mean they're not there.
   7. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 03:47 PM (#2083418)
Any preseason takers on Trachsel's ERA being better than RJs on July 1?

After the game it won't.
   8. tfbg9 Posted: July 01, 2006 at 04:02 PM (#2083421)
Philip K Dick is awesome.
   9. TVerik - Dr. Velocity Posted: July 01, 2006 at 04:05 PM (#2083423)
Every time a movie based on one of his stories comes out, I read the whole bunch of stories again and ignore the movie.
   10. villainx Posted: July 01, 2006 at 04:15 PM (#2083427)
As of this morning,

Jeter is batting .333 and has 46 rbi, and career high rbi is 102;

Reyes is batting .289 with only 36 rbi. His career high rbi is 58;

Alex had 130 rbi, and has top 100 rbi for almost 10 seasons;

Wright had 102 rbi last year, and it was the only time he has done so.

Clearly Alex and Jeter is better than Reyes and Wright for the next five years.
   11. villainx Posted: July 01, 2006 at 04:20 PM (#2083430)
i'm reading scanner now, my first time reading phil k dick.
   12. Raskolnikov Posted: July 01, 2006 at 04:22 PM (#2083431)
Wow, I'm watching the England-Port. match. What a horrible red card call on Rooney. Why can't they find any refs with competence and a spine?
   13. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 04:32 PM (#2083433)
You kidding me Rask? It was well-deserved.
   14. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 04:35 PM (#2083434)
Oh, and I've only read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? which is a fine novel.
   15. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 04:38 PM (#2083435)
Seems like Willie has really learned from his mistakes. I present the worst lineup of the season for you:

J. Reyes ss
P. Lo Duca dh
C. Beltran cf
D. Wright 3b
J. Franco 1b
X. Nady rf
C. Woodward 2b
R. Castro c
E. Marrero lf

I pin the chances of winning at around 4%. If they somehow pull it out today, I say it's the win of the season.
   16. Raskolnikov Posted: July 01, 2006 at 04:43 PM (#2083438)
You kidding me Rask? It was well-deserved.

No way. That was incidental contact. You could see that the refs only went red after being bombarded by pleas from the Portugal players.
   17. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 04:46 PM (#2083439)
Well he did stomp on the Portuguese player. Then he lost his cool and shoved someone with an elbow. I'd say that's pretty damn close to a red.
   18. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 04:49 PM (#2083440)
Ooo, late flurry by England. They'll still lose in PKs.
   19. Raskolnikov Posted: July 01, 2006 at 04:49 PM (#2083441)
I don't think a ref should make such an impacting decision unless he's sure of that type of call. That wasn't even borderline and to affect the game at such a level is poor officiating.
   20. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 04:51 PM (#2083442)
Well, I don't either. But it shouldn't come as surprising. They've done it time and time again in this World Cup. Rooney should know better. The shove was the final straw for the ref.
   21. villainx Posted: July 01, 2006 at 04:53 PM (#2083444)
No replay of the red card so far.

So I can't say.
   22. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: July 01, 2006 at 04:53 PM (#2083445)
That lineup isn't wonderful, but I'm not really sure what could be done to make it any better.
   23. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 04:54 PM (#2083446)
No replay of the red card so far.

So I can't say.

Yeah, don't you love ABC? Worst coverage ever.
   24. villainx Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:05 PM (#2083452)
For some reason, i would think being a man up would be a bigger advantage than has been evident so far.
   25. TVerik - Dr. Velocity Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:06 PM (#2083453)
Actually, ABC is just piggybacking the "world feed". So broadcasters around the world have exactly the same replays.
   26. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:07 PM (#2083455)
Haha, Crouch is terrible!
   27. Best Regards, President of Comfort, Esq., LLC Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:07 PM (#2083456)
I doubt I'll ever watch a non-World Cup game, but I am very much enjoying this tournament.
   28. Raskolnikov Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:08 PM (#2083458)
England's played great since the red card. At least 2 tremendous chances - if they don't prevail, they're going to regret not converting.

BTW, Matt, how can you say Crouch isn't a quality player after this match?
   29. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:09 PM (#2083459)
I don't know Erik, I was reading The Guardian's game blog and they are talking about replays. And someone from Canada who I am chatting with said he saw a replay.
   30. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:10 PM (#2083460)
BTW, Matt, how can you say Crouch isn't a quality player after this match?

If he ##### up his penalty later.
   31. Best Regards, President of Comfort, Esq., LLC Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:10 PM (#2083461)
For some reason, i would think being a man up would be a bigger advantage than has been evident so far.

I think the reason it's more of an advantage in hockey is because you can move faster and the hard puck moves faster and truer on ice than an air-filled ball on grass, making it a lot easier to set up the unguarded man.
   32. villainx Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:11 PM (#2083463)
Actually, ABC is just piggybacking the "world feed". So broadcasters around the world have exactly the same replays.

They can't edit from the feed? No replay at end of regulation, end of 1st overtime? They are forced to show players drinking water instead.
   33. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:12 PM (#2083464)
For some reason, i would think being a man up would be a bigger advantage than has been evident so far.

It should be. Portugal was playing extremely passive in the final 30 minutes of regulation.
   34. villainx Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:13 PM (#2083468)
That was an underwhelming reply of the red card incident.
   35. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:13 PM (#2083469)
There's a replay. Yep, groin shot.
   36. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:14 PM (#2083471)
I hate Newscorp. Watching New York baseball fellate itself is painful.

Wright: "Derek Jeter is my hero."
Jeter: "Jose Reyes is fun to watch."
   37. TVerik - Dr. Velocity Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:15 PM (#2083472)
They can't edit from the feed? No replay at end of regulation, end of 1st overtime? They are forced to show players drinking water instead.

That's a very good question.

In order to edit from the feed, they'd need to pay for and staff a control room. Which raises the cost for the game significantly, without adding at all to the ratings. After all, who would watch World Cup action ONLY if there were extended replays?
   38. Raskolnikov Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:23 PM (#2083480)
Geez, the Portugese are such divers. And he's my David Wright of soccer, but Lampard has disappeared since the early 2nd half.
   39. villainx Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:23 PM (#2083481)
After all, who would watch World Cup action ONLY if there were extended replays?

i guess more people if they did a better job. the world cup games are amazing, but a lot of time, the analyst are talking with no visual examples.

of course, it could also be the fox nightmare too. so i guess this is better.
   40. TVerik - Dr. Velocity Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:24 PM (#2083483)
By the way, before the game starts, I think that Dick fans should pick up the various collections of his short stories - I think they're better than the novels.

I recommend this one.
   41. villainx Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:25 PM (#2083485)
but Lampard has disappeared since the early 2nd half.

He's playing D?
   42. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:26 PM (#2083487)
Lennon coming off? What the ####?
   43. TVerik - Dr. Velocity Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:27 PM (#2083489)
Broadcasters have exclusivity, and that's why. We can't have consumers choosing the best coverage of these games. They're gonna get the coverage that suits think they should get.
   44. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:28 PM (#2083491)
Hey, the Mets have as many hits today as yesterday!
   45. Raskolnikov Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:28 PM (#2083492)
but Lampard has disappeared since the early 2nd half.

He's playing D?

Yeah, but the English need him for midfield presence and some offense. Gerrard on the other hand has been fantastic in this game.
   46. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:29 PM (#2083493)
McCarver makes idiotic comment No. 1 of the day.
   47. villainx Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:29 PM (#2083494)
PK time, I guess. This will be cool, I've never seen one before.
   48. Raskolnikov Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:29 PM (#2083495)
England is in survival mode right now.
   49. Joshemy Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:29 PM (#2083496)
Hey Reyes!
   50. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:30 PM (#2083497)
Excellent...
   51. Joshemy Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:30 PM (#2083498)
More hits than last night!
   52. Raskolnikov Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:30 PM (#2083499)
LoDuca doing something productive!
   53. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:31 PM (#2083500)
Whaddya say? Garrard, Lampard, Crouch, Hargreaves and Cole?
   54. Best Regards, President of Comfort, Esq., LLC Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:31 PM (#2083503)
PK time, I guess. This will be cool, I've never seen one before.

Penalty kicks suck. It pretty much comes down to if the goalkeeper guesses right.

It's like deciding who wins on a coinflip.
   55. Raskolnikov Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:32 PM (#2083505)
Terry definitely will be one.
   56. AJMcCringleberry Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:32 PM (#2083506)
Not good Beltran.
   57. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:33 PM (#2083509)
Way to go David!!!
   58. villainx Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:33 PM (#2083510)
Penalty kicks suck. It pretty much comes down to if the goalkeeper guesses right.

It does help show who's clutch and who isn't?
   59. AJMcCringleberry Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:34 PM (#2083511)
WRIGHT!
   60. NJ in NJ Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:34 PM (#2083512)
Thanks, Randy.

WRIGHT!

Now go England!

C'mon foreigners who speak our language!
   63. Joshemy Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:35 PM (#2083518)
D-Wright!
   64. AJMcCringleberry Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:36 PM (#2083519)
A Rickey sighting!
   65. Best Regards, President of Comfort, Esq., LLC Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:37 PM (#2083520)
Well, England is done.
   66. Raskolnikov Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:37 PM (#2083521)
Lampard blows it!
   67. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:37 PM (#2083523)
Wow Lampard. Wow.
   68. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:38 PM (#2083525)
OFF THE POST! OFF THE POST!
   69. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:39 PM (#2083527)
Hargreaves repents!

Sidebar!

England with a chance to take the lead!
   72. AJMcCringleberry Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:40 PM (#2083530)
Portugal sucks.
   73. Raskolnikov Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:41 PM (#2083532)
Gerrard misses too. Wow.
   74. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:41 PM (#2083533)
Keepers guessing well here.
   75. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:42 PM (#2083535)
Carragher is a failure.
   76. Best Regards, President of Comfort, Esq., LLC Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:42 PM (#2083536)
NOW England is done.
   77. Raskolnikov Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:44 PM (#2083539)
Don't know why England kept going low.
   78. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:44 PM (#2083540)
Carragher should be tortured and shot.
   79. Joshemy Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:45 PM (#2083543)
He's out!!!
   80. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:45 PM (#2083544)
Can't believe they didn't let Crouch shoot instead of Carragher.
   81. NJ in NJ Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:45 PM (#2083545)
Even Tim McCarver knew Jeter was out. Heh.
   82. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:46 PM (#2083546)
Er, nevermind.
   83. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:47 PM (#2083548)
Umpires are ####### the Mets sideways here.
   84. TVerik - Dr. Velocity Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:47 PM (#2083549)
From a Yankee perspective, they have to take advantage of this.
   85. Joshemy Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:48 PM (#2083550)
Strike him out throw him out!
   86. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:48 PM (#2083551)
So Joe Torre makes up for the umpires' mistakes.
   87. TVerik - Dr. Velocity Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:48 PM (#2083552)
&*(@#^*()@^()!@^()#
   88. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:48 PM (#2083553)
Sit your butt down, Giambi. You too, Johnny.
   89. NJ in NJ Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:48 PM (#2083554)
It was retarded to start the runners with Giambi batting. What the hell was up with Damon on that "run"?
   90. TVerik - Dr. Velocity Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:50 PM (#2083557)
Also, I tried to emphasize "have", not "take". Which makes no sense.
   91. villainx Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:50 PM (#2083558)
Trax is so deliberate.
   92. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:52 PM (#2083560)
Over/under on Trachsel innings today: 5.1

I'll take the under.
   93. villainx Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:52 PM (#2083561)
Mauer is really hitting .392? Damn.
   94. NJ in NJ Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:53 PM (#2083562)
That was a waste.
   95. CrosbyBird Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:53 PM (#2083563)
You don't get to set the over/under and then choose!

But I'll take the over on 5.1 anyway.
   96. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:54 PM (#2083564)
Mauer is really hitting .392? Damn.

Best young player in baseball. Great defensive catcher. Ultra-hot girlfriend.
   97. CrosbyBird Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:55 PM (#2083566)
Mauer is really hitting .392? Damn.

Good thing I traded him.
   98. Raskolnikov Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:56 PM (#2083569)
That should have been a hit, the Mets are suffering from a run of bad luck.
   99. Old Matt Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:56 PM (#2083570)
You don't get to set the over/under and then choose!

I set it objectively.

Mets trying to kill Johnson. They figure this is the only way they can win?
   100. rLr Is King Of The Romans And Above Grammar Posted: July 01, 2006 at 05:58 PM (#2083572)
That was uncanny. On two consecutive pitches, no less.

Randy Johnson is still terrible, though.
