It's only three starts, but wow, Kip Wells has really stunk so far this year.
   2. Old Matt Posted: July 05, 2006 at 10:49 PM (#2088408)
Wright is benched; Woody at 3B. Nady sits after his biggest hit.
   3. The usual palaver and twaddle (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:04 PM (#2088417)
Why in God's name is Wright on the pine?????
   4. Sam M. Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:04 PM (#2088418)
It's not looking good for Wagner. Apparently, he's running 4th in the voting for the last ASG spot. Nomar's leading.
   5. Sam M. Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:07 PM (#2088421)
Why in God's name is Wright on the pine?????

A night off would do him good, MFC.
   6. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:08 PM (#2088423)
Yeah, particularly for the guys going to the ASG, I think it is important to get them some time off this week.

And that is the official word - just a breather. Do you think he'll be in the HR Derby?

Great start El Duque.
   9. Sam M. Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:15 PM (#2088435)
YES!!!!!!! I just won the auction for this ball! Excellent!!!

Why is SNY canonizing Lima? I can't take it.
   11. Bob Koo Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:20 PM (#2088439)
Nice pitching to Bay. But the first two outs were hit hard.
   12. AJMcCringleberry Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:20 PM (#2088440)
That turned out well.
   13. Bob Koo Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:24 PM (#2088441)
Reyes rules.

Triple!
   15. Sam M. Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:25 PM (#2088443)
JOSE!!! Look out, Mr. Waner. Three away . . . .
   16. Sam M. Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:26 PM (#2088446)
Wells has to get those pitches a LOT lower, or he's going to get pounded. Not enough stuff to pitch that high . . . .
   17. Old Matt Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:27 PM (#2088448)
Most triples ever in a season by a switch hitter: George Davis, 1893 - 26.
   18. Bob Koo Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:30 PM (#2088452)
Figures that Delgado would make the first out. He doesn't inspire much confidence these days.
   19. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:30 PM (#2088453)
Delgado is a mess.
   20. Sam M. Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:31 PM (#2088454)
Most triples ever in a season by a switch hitter: George Davis, 1893 - 26.

That would be a great record for Reyes, wouldn't it? Unlikely, though, at least if the Mets have a big lead late. Reyes will get rested, and Randolph will tell him to turn some potential triples into doubles. Don't you think?
   21. Old Matt Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:32 PM (#2088455)
Who would win in a footrace - Chavez or Reyes? I think it would be pretty damn close.
   22. Orange & Blue Velvet Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:33 PM (#2088457)
That would be a great record for Reyes, wouldn't it?

150 runs would be better, but that's just a matter of taste.
   23. Old Matt Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:33 PM (#2088458)
UNBREAKABLE!
   24. Sam M. Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:33 PM (#2088459)
I think Wells and Floyd were both laughing there.
   25. Old Matt Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:34 PM (#2088462)
They need to score at least 20 tonight.
   26. AJMcCringleberry Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:34 PM (#2088463)

Wells is not putting on much of a display here to enhance any trade value the Pirates might hope he has . . . .

   33. Old Matt Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:40 PM (#2088476)
Sam, that's a great sig and an even better price.

Congratulations, Sam. I wish some of the younger posters could have seen Tom Terrific pitch.

Thanks, Benji. It was kind of pricey, but worth it. I'm going to create a display of that ball with my ticket stub and program from his 300th win against the Yankees. Special day, all-time favorite player.

Cohen telling the great Angel Hernandez story of 1998. John Franco was an angry man that day.

Sam, you'd love what's currently sitting in my room. A framed Seaver autographed jersey with the HOF '92 inscription.
   37. Sam M. Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:45 PM (#2088489)
Now, THAT was a pretty pitch.

Crossing my fingers Pelfrey pitches on Saturday. I'd love to see his debut live.

I've often regretted that I didn't go to Cooperstown that summer. To this day, I'm not really sure what stupid excuse I gave myself for NOT going. But I definitely should have . . . .

Petit getting roughed up in Washington.
   45. Benji Posted: July 05, 2006 at 11:54 PM (#2088505)
I dunno. Yankee fans told me Cano was a much better offensive player. His is .792.

   49. Russlan is not Russian Posted: July 06, 2006 at 12:20 AM (#2088562)
Cano is hitting .325. I'm shocked that he's only posting a .792 OPS.

Trivia: 6 pitchers with 300 saves who pitched for the Mets.

Wagner, Aguilera, Franco, Myers, Reardon, and ?
   51. Sam M. Posted: July 06, 2006 at 12:27 AM (#2088578)
Cano is hitting .325. I'm shocked that he's only posting a .792 OPS.

You know, for all the back and forth between Mets and Yankee fans about Cano and Reyes, we might just want to remember what we all were telling the skeptics about Reyes, when they were saying that he didn't show enough plate discipline, and that this was unlikely to improve, etc., etc.: we said to wait and see. Cano is a very, very talented hitter, and is likely to be quite valuable for them. I'm convinced he doesn't have Reyes's ceiling, but he's a player.

The six 300 save guys who pitched for the Mets: John Franco, Wagner, Reardon, Aguilera, Roberto Hernandez, Randy Myers.

Kool-Aid! How could I forget him?
   54. Old Matt Posted: July 06, 2006 at 12:30 AM (#2088587)
I thought about RoHernandez, but wasn't sure.

I'd really like to see the Mets get him back. It could free Aaron Heilman.
   55. Old Matt Posted: July 06, 2006 at 12:34 AM (#2088601)
79 pitches through five, not ideal, but you can't argue with the results.
   56. Sam M. Posted: July 06, 2006 at 12:37 AM (#2088606)
I really think Kool-Aid™ was the best nickname Mets' chatters have come up with for any player. That was OFF's, wasn't it? When he said he wasn't going to drink the Kool-Aid, no matter how well he pitched? Great stuff.
   57. Old Matt Posted: July 06, 2006 at 12:40 AM (#2088613)
Great stuff here from Cohen.
   58. Old Matt Posted: July 06, 2006 at 12:43 AM (#2088615)
When the Mets clinch the East this year, the fans should charge the field and tear it up.

For old time's sake.
   59. Sam M. Posted: July 06, 2006 at 12:51 AM (#2088638)
When the Mets clinch the East this year, the fans should charge the field and tear it up.

Hopefully, they'll win the whole deal in 2008, and the team will PAY the fans to tear it up as part of the Shea demolition in preparation for New Ebbetts Field opening in 2009!

Kill two birds with one stone.

Speaking of which, with two NY parks opening at the same time, I wonder how they'll do the ASG thing? Don't they usually try to get those into new parks? But they surely won't give N.Y. two all-star games too close together . . . . Hmmmmmmm . . . .

Wikipedia:

Recently (March 2006), It has been rumored that the New York Yankees would get the game [2008], as a way to send the historic stadium off before the new Yankee Stadium opens next door in 2009. Then again, some people say the Yankees should not host the 2009 All-Star Game because of three other years where they have hosted. Many people also say that the New York Mets might as well be hosting years such as 2009 and 2013 considering the new ballpark the Mets plan to have by 2009.

The Mets need to host the ASG. It's been too long.

   76. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: July 06, 2006 at 01:08 AM (#2088682)
El Duque's Mets ERA now at 4.14 in 8 starts. Not too shabby.
   77. Banta Posted: July 06, 2006 at 01:09 AM (#2088686)
Cohen seems to be forgetting El Duque's complete game.

I do think this start was better though.

I'm just guessing, but I bet El Duque has probably has the second best starter ERA since coming to the Mets. Behind only Glavine, probably ahead of Pedro. Where does one go to look that kind of split up?

Anyway, I hope Trax is first up on the choping block.

Was he in danger of losing his job?

I don't know. He does suck. Not as bad as Trachsel I guess.

These close shots of the Marlins' scout's book are sweet.
   81. Old Matt Posted: July 06, 2006 at 01:15 AM (#2088701)
The Mets made the deal for El Duque because of one start against the Pirates? Yikes.
   82. Banta Posted: July 06, 2006 at 01:19 AM (#2088711)
I get the impression that Cohen really wants to see Pelfrey soon.
   83. Sam M. Posted: July 06, 2006 at 01:19 AM (#2088712)
Gak. Darling advocates Trachsel as a starter because El Duque could come out of the pen. And I used to like you, Ronnie. How about Trachsel NOT being a starter because HE'S A TOTAL MEDIOCRITY?
   84. Zeba Zeba Eata Posted: July 06, 2006 at 01:20 AM (#2088714)
Starter ERAs last 31 days (including today):

Duque 3.38
Trax 4.76
Glavine 5.51
Soler 5.56
Pedro 6.23

Kind of amazing we've done so well (17-12 if we hold on) in that stretch.
   85. Russlan is not Russian Posted: July 06, 2006 at 01:21 AM (#2088719)
Minaya has always loved Hernandez. He scouted him something like twenty years ago. He traded for him when he was GM for the Expos. That last start against Pittsburgh may have been the straw that broke the camel's back but I'm sure Minaya has been keeping an eye on him for a long time.
   86. Banta Posted: July 06, 2006 at 01:24 AM (#2088726)
Thanks for that, Zeba.

Why is Lima up!? Is that saying if Sanchez allows this game to get closer, we'll bring in Lima to completely blow it?
