On FSNPitt again! Woo!

Not to throw cold water on the Mets start so far - but their opponets’ combined winning percentage is a sizzling .403

Aren't the Mets one of the reasons why those winning percentages are so low?

You are both right -- that's why these early season records don't have a lot of predictive value. We will know alot more about this Mets team after the next 18 game stretch, all against teams with post-season legitimate aspirations.

Just for numbers' sake, since I basically agree with steveb on this one:

Mets' Opponents Winning Percentage, Total: .403
Mets' Opponents Winning Percentage, vs. Mets: .333
Mets Opponents Winning Percentage, vs. Others: .500
   5. RB in NYC (Now Semi-Retired from BBTF) Posted: May 04, 2006 at 06:27 PM (#2003898)
Um, take that back.

Mets Opponents Winning Percentage, vs. Others: <strike>.500</strike> .287

Um, take that back.

Mets Opponents Winning Percentage, vs. Others: .500 .287

That can't be possible, can it?
   7. Sam M. Posted: May 04, 2006 at 06:35 PM (#2003905)
That can't be possible, can it?

No. There's no way they could be .333 vs. the Mets, and .287 v. others, and yet somehow be .403 overall.

Unless they are calculating the federal budget deficit for the Treasury Department. Those guys can make numbers squeal like a pig.
   8. Bob Koo Posted: May 04, 2006 at 06:41 PM (#2003913)
Hmm, taking your correction into account, the combination of those percentages is impossible. There's no way that the Mets' Opponents Win. Pct. vs. the Mets *and* Others are both lower than the total.

Mets signed Jose Offerman. Oof.
   9. RB in NYC (Now Semi-Retired from BBTF) Posted: May 04, 2006 at 06:42 PM (#2003916)
No, it can't. Somewhere something is screwy, big-time. Let's see. Having dnoe this again with the raw data I have now, I have the Mets opponents as being a collective 9-18 (.333) agansit the Mets--which is right, since the Mets are 8-9--and a collective 58-96 (.376) aganist everyone else, which has to be wrong, since it gives us a collective .370 W%. So that last number is wrong.

Ok, having it done once more I get the Mets' opponents vs. everyone else as being 68-95 (.417). Which gives us in toto a 77-190 (.405) record, which is close enough to Sean's number that I'm calling it a day
   10. RB in NYC (Now Semi-Retired from BBTF) Posted: May 04, 2006 at 06:44 PM (#2003918)
And all that, by the way, is what I get for trying to do math.
   11. Sean McNally Posted: May 04, 2006 at 06:47 PM (#2003919)
OK, we're all allegedly thinking fans, let's figure this out.

Washington - 2-7 vs. Mets/7-12 vs. non-Mets
Florida - 0-2 vs. Mets/7-16 vs. non-Mets
Milwaukee - 1-2 vs. Mets/14-11 vs. non-Mets
Atlanta - 3-3 vs. Mets/9-12 vs. non-Mets
San Diego - 2-2 vs. Mets/10-13 vs. non-Mets
San Fran - 1-2 vs. Mets/13-11 vs. non-Mets
Pittsburgh - 0-1 vs. Mets/8-20 vs. non-Mets

Totals:
9-19 vs. Mets (.321 win%)
68-95 vs. non-Mets (.417 win%)

Washington is 2-6 against the Mets, not 2-7.
   13. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: May 04, 2006 at 07:56 PM (#2003997)
BTW, at what point does Minaya think about re-signing Glavine?
   14. AJMcCringleberry Posted: May 04, 2006 at 08:35 PM (#2004075)
Mets signed Jose Offerman.

What!? Please tell me that is some kind of sick joke.
   15. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: May 04, 2006 at 08:41 PM (#2004096)
Speaking of math, anyone here willing to take my online calculus test for me? I really need to pass this class. If it makes you feel better, I seriously don't intend to ever use calc again in my life so its not like you would be preventing me from learning something that might be useful to me in the future.

Mets signed Jose Offerman. Oof.

Further proof that Omar is a Mets gamechatter. Why, just the other day I said that I'd rather see Offerman back than to rely on Valentin for anything. Guess Omar took me up on it.

Pelfrey today: 4.0 IP 13 hits 5 ER 1/3 bb/so. Ouch.
   16. RB in NYC (Now Semi-Retired from BBTF) Posted: May 04, 2006 at 08:43 PM (#2004103)
I'll try my hand at it, OFF. You want to finish my essay comparing Churchill's The World Crisis, The Second World War, and The Life of Lord Randolph Churchill for me?
   17. Sam M. Posted: May 04, 2006 at 08:47 PM (#2004113)
Pelfrey today: 4.0 IP 13 hits 5 ER 1/3 bb/so. Ouch.

Ouch, indeed. That should temper at least a bit of the "Let's call him up right now" talk, eh?
   18. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: May 04, 2006 at 08:55 PM (#2004128)
Seriously? I can only take the test once and within an hour (i think), though. We are studying differential equations and their business aplications (i.e maximizing profit, minimizing cost, etc).

I'd love to help you out but I've never read anything by Churchill. I could probably read it when you finish it and help you polish it, but that's about it.

Yep, all of that stuff. Hey, I gotta go to the gym right now, but i'll be back at gametime (4 PST). Do you think I can talk to you on AIM or MSN?
   21. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: May 04, 2006 at 09:08 PM (#2004141)
Sure. I'll be on MSN.

Franco and Woody tonight at 1B and 2B.
   24. Sam M. Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:09 PM (#2004273)
One of my students who has Delgado on his fantasy team wanted to bench him today because he read Delgado might get the day off. I told him I didn't know, so he didn't do it.

Oops.
   25. Joshemy Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:12 PM (#2004274)
K!

Glavine's good, eh?

I have a final at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning and a paper due at 5, which I haven't started yet.

I may not be watching much.
   28. Sam M. Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:16 PM (#2004280)
Now, that is the way to start an inning!
   29. Joshemy Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:17 PM (#2004283)
Nice job pitcher.
   30. AJMcCringleberry Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:18 PM (#2004286)
Lo Duca gets partially bailed out by the pitcher.
   31. Sam M. Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:23 PM (#2004298)
That's two DPs into which Lo Duca should have hit in four days where the pitcher's error saved him. The moral of the story?

Pitchers help out catchers.

No?

OK, how about there is no moral to the story.
   32. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:23 PM (#2004299)
What do you know, the Mets stranded some baserunners.

Wright needs to stop making outs. Its so out of character.

Hi OFF,
I'm fairly good at math as well, about to finish my math degree in a couple of weeks. I'd be available for consultation if you need it
   35. AJMcCringleberry Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:26 PM (#2004309)
OK, how about there is no moral to the story.

How about, Lo Duca's suckiness is transfered when he hits the ball? Is that a moral?
   36. Sam M. Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:29 PM (#2004316)
Better bump up that grade, Sam.

He seems to think he's gonna need it, but I doubt it. He's a good student. Won't know til I turn in the grades.

But he's a Cubs' fan. He deserves what he gets, is the way I look at it.
   37. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:32 PM (#2004328)
Thanks, braannigan.

Floyd needs to drop this "making contact" BS and start swining for the fences.
   38. Banta Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:33 PM (#2004334)
The beginning of this chatter was very amusing. It's like the internal dialogue my brain goes through anytime anything more than simply addition is required.

To reiterate, Wright really needs a day off. Probably not today with Delgado out, but soon.
   39. AJMcCringleberry Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:35 PM (#2004340)
Glavine showing off his speed!

Oh. Well that changes things. Screw his fantasy team, and his grade.
   41. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:38 PM (#2004345)
You gotta be kidding me, Jose. 2-0 and you swing at that? Horrible. Four stranded through two. This team makes me sick.
   42. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:41 PM (#2004355)
What a play, David!
   43. Joshemy Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:43 PM (#2004360)

   46. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:49 PM (#2004371)

Yay David!

   52. AJMcCringleberry Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:56 PM (#2004389)
Dammit Cliff.

Jesus, Cliff. You're starting to exhaust my patience.

####### Floyd.
   55. Joshemy Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:59 PM (#2004397)
Bad Franco. Come on Woody, we need a big two out hit.
   56. Banta Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:59 PM (#2004398)
If the Mets don't score again this inning, that's pitiful.
   57. Sam M. Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:59 PM (#2004400)
Oh, this is about to be a monumentally wasted inning. Two terrible ABs from veteran hitters right there.
   58. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: May 04, 2006 at 11:59 PM (#2004401)
Horrible situation? Meet the Mets...
   59. Joshemy Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:01 AM (#2004404)
Damn it.
   60. Banta Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:01 AM (#2004405)
And that's pitiful.
   61. AJMcCringleberry Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:01 AM (#2004407)
That was a shitty inning.
   62. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:02 AM (#2004412)
FREE LASTINGS MILLEDGE!
   63. Sam M. Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:04 AM (#2004417)
Pathetic. Just awful. Floyd jams himself on a 3-1 pitch and bails out a pitcher who is pitching himself right out of the game. Franco swings at bullcrap and seals the deal.

Yet another example of not taking advantage of a bad pitcher. This pattern has worn me out, and if I'm Randolph I make it clear I've had enough of this hitting down to the level of the pitcher.
   64. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:06 AM (#2004422)
That inning was all on Floyd. 3-1 and he pops out? I'm sorry, but that's unacceptable. Franco was patient because the pitcher had been missing, got behind and struck out. That's a bit more understandable given the circumstances. But Floyd's AB has no excuse.
   65. Raskolnikov Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:07 AM (#2004425)
We need to extend Glavine.
I think Soler will be ML ready before Pelfrey.
Any news on when Humber is ready?
   66. Joshemy Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:08 AM (#2004427)
Strike out the side! 7 Ks!
   67. AJMcCringleberry Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:08 AM (#2004428)
7 K's through 4!?
   68. Raskolnikov Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:08 AM (#2004429)
Glavine just struck out the side, I don't think he ever got over 85 with Sanchez.
   69. Banta Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:09 AM (#2004430)
Glavine is obscene.
   70. Sam M. Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:11 AM (#2004436)
And Tommy Glavine continues to do his best Nolan Ryan imitation. If he keeps up this K rate, would it be the greatest increase for a pitcher over the age of 35 in history? Over 30?

Last year, 4.47 K/9 IP.

This year, 7.95 K/9 IP.

Wow.
   71. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:12 AM (#2004437)
Damn. That was well-hit.
   72. Old Matt Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:16 AM (#2004444)
I really thought tonight was the night.
   73. Banta Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:16 AM (#2004446)
And there goes the no hitter!

Do any of you NOT think that after three innings (sometimes even less)?
   74. villainx Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:17 AM (#2004448)
If he keeps up this K rate

Seems like a big big if. I'm enjoying the ride, however.
   75. Sam M. Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:18 AM (#2004451)
Seems like a big big if.

That's enough bubble-bursting out of you, junior. I'll ride my fantasy for a while longer.

And right on cue, Mr. Burnitz keeps me floating along.
   76. Joshemy Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:23 AM (#2004463)
9 Ks!
   77. AJMcCringleberry Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:23 AM (#2004465)
9!
   78. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:24 AM (#2004467)
-Okay. We have to score some more runs here. Beltran will find a way.
   79. AJMcCringleberry Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:26 AM (#2004473)
Why does our offense stink?
   80. Banta Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:28 AM (#2004475)
Ooooh, a Wright double!
   81. AJMcCringleberry Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:28 AM (#2004476)
Wright!
   82. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:29 AM (#2004477)
He's baaaaaaaaack!
   83. Sam M. Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:29 AM (#2004478)
Why does our offense stink?

Now, there's a question I need to ask on my next exam . . . .
   84. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:33 AM (#2004489)
Floyd has definitely not been the awesomeness this season.
   85. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:33 AM (#2004490)
Awful AB by Floyd again. Swings at the curveballs on the dirt, and he takes the fastballs over the plate. Randolph needs to bench him for a couple of games.
   86. Sam M. Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:34 AM (#2004492)
Floyd is killing us.
   87. villainx Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:34 AM (#2004493)
I'm just trying to imagine how hot (and soon) Floyd will get to bring his stats back to respectability.
   88. Sam M. Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:37 AM (#2004503)
Is it too soon, or just plain wrong, to wonder about Floyd's health? I know I'm grasping at straws here, and it's probably just a bad month of games, which happens. But man, he just looks awful.
   89. AJMcCringleberry Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:38 AM (#2004505)
That was an error?
   90. I Love LA (OFF) Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:38 AM (#2004506)
UGH UGH UGH.
   91. AJMcCringleberry Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:39 AM (#2004507)
Big K!

####. Dammit Woody.
   93. AJMcCringleberry Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:41 AM (#2004514)
####### Woodward.
   94. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:41 AM (#2004516)
That's why Woodward will never start for the Mets at second.
   95. Sam M. Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:41 AM (#2004517)
Where's Matsui when you need him?
   96. villainx Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:41 AM (#2004519)
According to Yahoo's updating of the game, Floyd doesn't look awful. :P

And despite the last at bat where he was swinging awfully, I thought the consensus is that he's been stinging the ball, but at leather instead of on grass, wall, or over wall.
   97. good_ol_gil Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:42 AM (#2004520)
I have a terrible feeling about this game.
   98. Joshemy Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:43 AM (#2004525)
Yay Tommy!
   99. AJMcCringleberry Posted: May 05, 2006 at 12:43 AM (#2004526)
Tommy!

God, Bay is sucking lately. When you strike out looking on the same pitch twice in three AB, you know you're not doing well.
