Titanic is steaming towards New York, no problems in sight, HUZZAH!

Lineup for the DEVIL Rays:

Jennings, CF
Pena, 1B
Longoria, 3B
Joyce, LF
Zobrist, RF
Keppinger, 2B
Vogt, DH
Molina, C
Brignac, SS

Lineup for the Titanic:

Smith, Captain
Wilde, Chief Mate

Should be an even match.
   3. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 13, 2012 at 01:44 PM (#4105742)
Also, even year Beckett is pitching. The Titanic has been spotted a 4 run lead.
   4. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:02 PM (#4105768)
Kind of appropriate that Posada threw out the first pitch at NYS the same day Varitek threw out the first pitch at Fenway.
   5. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:07 PM (#4105774)
thought they just said wake threw it out?
   6. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:10 PM (#4105775)
91? That's it?
   7. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:11 PM (#4105777)
Wakefield and Varitek did the simultaenous throwing out the first pitch thing.
   8. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:13 PM (#4105780)
FB is not really moving, is it.
   9. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:14 PM (#4105782)
McDonald really thought that ball was going to be catchable? it hit above the ####### scoreboard.
   10. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:16 PM (#4105784)
That was a great FB
   11. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:18 PM (#4105787)
Lotta fly balls.
   12. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:18 PM (#4105788)
Changeup and 2 seamer both seem to have a decent amount of run to them.

Does Brooks baseball not give live Pitch F/X data anymore? Some kind of message to come back to see it after the game is over. What the hell? Is there another decent site for live pitch f/x data? Cause I really like to be able to consult that during the game.

Price is dealing today.
   15. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:24 PM (#4105801)
Great play
   16. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:25 PM (#4105802)
Longoria had that ball, and Brignac stopped him from catching it. Thanks, Reid!
   17. Jim Wisinski Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:26 PM (#4105805)
Dumb play by Brignac there, the SS is supposed to go for everything but there's no reason to no let Longoria get any play like that.
   18. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:26 PM (#4105807)
I don't remember price having a fastball like this.
   19. Jim Wisinski Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:30 PM (#4105810)
#18, the velocity is definitely a bit higher than he normally sits at though not unusual either. What strikes me as different is the lateral movement to Gonzalez there, it seems much more pronounced than normal.
   20. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:31 PM (#4105813)
Price appears t ohave the good fastball today. 95-97+ there, with good location and a lot of run.
   21. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:31 PM (#4105814)
It might be one of those days where Price is able to go with 90% fastballs and be successful.
   22. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:32 PM (#4105815)
Not a good curve.
   23. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:32 PM (#4105816)
The Red Sox defensive positioning is ####### 10 years behind the state of the art. That ball Zobrist hit should be hit to a well positioned defense.
   24. Jim Wisinski Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:32 PM (#4105817)
It might be one of those days where Price is able to go with 90% fastballs and be successful

Which is especially good since Price generally thinks every day is one of those days.
   25. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:32 PM (#4105818)
Beckett seems to be cutting his fastball to mask its lack of velocity, but the curve isn't there yet.

This is going to end badly. I'm calling more runs allowed than IP for Beckett today. Again.
   26. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:32 PM (#4105820)

That ball properly thrown shouldn't be a hit.

This is going to end badly. I'm calling more runs allowed than IP for Beckett today. Again.

Well, if he gives up fewer than 5 homers, it'll be a vast improvement.
   28. Jim Wisinski Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:34 PM (#4105823)
Was Youkilis trying to do a spinning flop and trap that ball against the ground with his groin cup?
   29. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:37 PM (#4105826)
They had Youkilis positioned 10 feet off the line, he never had a shot at that.
   30. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:40 PM (#4105828)
They had Youkilis positioned 10 feet off the line, he never had a shot at that.

No, he was closer. Watch the replay. He's maybe 6 feet off the line.
   31. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:41 PM (#4105829)
Varitek's certainly taken advantage of retirement.
   32. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:42 PM (#4105833)
At least they're making Price throw a lot of pitches.
   33. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:43 PM (#4105835)
The Yankees have as many home runs in 5 innings today as the Red Sox have all year. 2.
   34. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:44 PM (#4105836)
Varitek, "You realize, you don't have to train today. You can, but you don't have to."
   35. Jim Wisinski Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:46 PM (#4105839)

Not saying he should have, just that he looked really silly doing it.
   36. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:46 PM (#4105840)
Varitek looks like he put on some weight.
   37. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:46 PM (#4105841)
2-2 to Ortiz looked like strike 3 to me. No brooks baseball to see its location on P F/X makes me sadface :(
   38. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:47 PM (#4105843)
Sox batters are spoiling some excellent pitches by Price.
   39. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:47 PM (#4105844)
I know McDonald has hit Price well in the past, but I'd be awfully tempted to bunt here.
   40. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:49 PM (#4105845)
Should have bunted.
   41. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:49 PM (#4105846)
Price's location of those three pitches could not have been better.
   42. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:50 PM (#4105847)
Now Ross hits into the 6-4-3.
   43. Jim Wisinski Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:50 PM (#4105848)
2-2 to Ortiz looked like strike 3 to me. No brooks baseball to see its location on P F/X makes me sadface

I'm pretty sure that was more in the zone than any of the three pitches to McDonald (Gameday agrees that all of those were on the edges though)
   44. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:51 PM (#4105851)
Our "lefty mashing" platoon players have been utterly worthless so far this year.

GameDay has pitch f/x location right in the browser.

Our "lefty mashing" platoon players have been utterly worthless so far this year.
Eh, whole team isn't hitting. They're just a cog in a larger, sucky machine.
   47. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:55 PM (#4105855)
It'll be interesting to see how Price looks in the 5th and 6th after contantly pumping 96-97 early. That's a few ticks above his average. Is he throwing harder than normal due to the high profile start at Fenway, or does he just have a better than average fastball today?
   48. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:56 PM (#4105856)
GameDay has pitch f/x location right in the browser.

It does but it's not as accurate as Brooks.
   49. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:59 PM (#4105859)
Beckett has now thrown some very respectable curves, and he seems to have a good change today. Hopefully I'll be wrong about the likely outcome of his start.
   50. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 02:59 PM (#4105860)
I think the Angels have actually had a worse start to their season than we have. They played KC (at home) and the Twins, and they're 2-4. Also down 5-0 in NY after 6 innings today.
   51. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:03 PM (#4105866)
Shoppach actively dove into that pitch.

When the ump jumped from behind the plate, I thought he was going to call him back.
   52. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:04 PM (#4105867)
I think the Angels have actually had a worse start to their season than we have. They played KC (at home) and the Twins, and they're 2-4. Also down 5-0 in NY after 6 innings today.
So you're saying, 86 wins and second wild card here we come!
   53. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:05 PM (#4105868)
Even when Price misses, he's not missing by much today.
   54. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:06 PM (#4105870)
Wow. Great baserunning there.

If the Sox don't get at least 2 runs out of this, they should just forfeit the game.
   55. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:06 PM (#4105871)
Some very baserunning by Shoppach. That was risky play, but a good one. I never thought he'd make it, off the bat.
   56. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:06 PM (#4105874)
Ellsbury, despite poor results, has looked good so far this year. He's seeing the ball well, and he'll start squaring it up soon.
   57. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:08 PM (#4105875)
Is Price trying to throw a perfect pitch every time? You only get one strike per pitch, no matter how beautiful it is.
   58. Jim Wisinski Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:08 PM (#4105877)
He's just overthrowing now.
   59. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:11 PM (#4105881)
You can't overshift against Gonzalez with runners in scoring position. That's a very bad decision by TB.
   60. Jim Wisinski Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:12 PM (#4105885)
The shift was less of a problem than the fact that Price floated that pitch in thigh-high, wasn't difficult for Gonzalez to slap it at that height.
   61. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:12 PM (#4105886)
I think that positioning was good for Gonzalez until he got to the 2 strike count. Once you get to 2 strikes, I think you need to defense against him cutting down his swing like that.
   62. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:14 PM (#4105887)
Gonzalez was going left side on every swing he's taken. He's going to just totally wear out the overshift if they keep doing it.
   63. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:16 PM (#4105890)
Wait, I saw it happen live, then I saw the replay, but I'm still confused. Did the Red Sox just get a lucky break? That can happen?
   64. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:18 PM (#4105892)
If Ross can even get a sac fly here, that would be HUGE.
   65. Jim Wisinski Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:18 PM (#4105893)
For a guy who closed out Game 7 of the ALCS Price tends to lose composure and start making a lot of bad pitches when he runs into trouble way too often. It gets rather tiresome to watch.
   66. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:20 PM (#4105894)
Price just doesn't seem to have a secondary pitch he trusts enough to go to in these situations, so he just starts tryingto throw perfect pitches with every fastball.
   67. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:21 PM (#4105897)
Ross ####### blows.
   68. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:21 PM (#4105898)
The curves he's thrown have looked really good, but he seems to have pocketed that pitch against RHP...

Ugh. Cody. He looked overmatched by the fastball.
   69. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:21 PM (#4105899)
3-0 count with bases loaded and 1 out, and he ends up grounding into a double play.
   70. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:24 PM (#4105904)
Looked like Price just challenged him with two fastballs, and Ross couldn't catch up.
   71. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:33 PM (#4105911)
Goal this inning has to be to push Price's PC over 100.
   72. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:34 PM (#4105913)
Apparently Aviles didn't get the memo.
   73. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:35 PM (#4105914)
Oh. Price is out of the game. Guess I missed that while coming back from the bathroom. Derp.
   74. Jim Wisinski Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:35 PM (#4105915)
Gonna be difficult Dan since Price isn't in the game.
   75. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:36 PM (#4105916)
Shoppach doubles off the groundball machine RHP. Go figure.
   76. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:37 PM (#4105918)
I know it's a comical overreaction, but I now want Kelly Shoppach to be the primary catcher.
   77. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:39 PM (#4105920)
If Zobrist goes home with that throw, it's at least close, isn't it?
   78. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:40 PM (#4105921)
I would think so, Mikael. I was actually kinda surprised they even sent him with 1 out, and even more surprised there was no play at the plate after he stumbled around third.
   79. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:42 PM (#4105922)
Has Ellsbury even attempted a steal yet?
   80. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:42 PM (#4105923)
Oh cool now Ellsbury is hurt.
   81. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:43 PM (#4105924)
Oh #### fuck ####.

That looks like a dislocated shoulder reaction.
   82. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:47 PM (#4105929)
Ross is in CF over Sweeney or McDonald? He seems like the worst defender of those 3 to me.
   83. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:47 PM (#4105930)
That looks like a dislocated shoulder reaction.

That looks like a strain. I'm going with "day to day."
   84. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:47 PM (#4105931)
The internet says 3-4 months for a dislocated shoulder is pretty much the minimum.
   85. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:48 PM (#4105932)
That wasn't a dislocation. he would have been writhing more.
   86. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:48 PM (#4105934)
I'm impressed with Beckett. He appears to have adjusted to diminished velocity after just one start.
   87. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:49 PM (#4105936)
That wasn't a dislocation. he would have been writhing more.
I think that's right.

I panicked. I'm still a little panicked, though.
   88. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:49 PM (#4105938)
Yeah that didn't look like a dislocation to me. Hopefully just a nasty contusion.
   89. Nasty Nate Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:50 PM (#4105940)
What happened to Ellsbury? Why did the yahoo sports box score say that the game was in a delay?
   90. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:51 PM (#4105942)
Knowing Ellsbury's history though, he'll probably need labrum surgery.
   91. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:52 PM (#4105944)
What happened to Ellsbury? Why did the yahoo sports box score say that the game was in a delay?

He went into second legs first and somehow ended up on his stomach on the other side of the bag. Brignac came down on top of him as he tried to make the throw to first. Ells screamed and walked off with his arm cradled against his chest.
   92. Nasty Nate Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:53 PM (#4105946)
thanks ... blechh
   93. UnclePab Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:54 PM (#4105947)
That looked painful. Hopefully it's not too serious, but the way this season is going, it's hard to be optimistic.
   94. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 03:54 PM (#4105949)
Interesting that Maddon decided Badenhop didn't have it and went to Davis after just one inning.

I think it looked like he was scared more than hurt. When I used to wrestle in high school it was not uncommon for people to wail out as though in pain but be fine afterward. And of course you have to play it up after you wail out like that.
   96. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:00 PM (#4105954)
Don Orsillo: fan of Undercover Boss and Dave Matthews Band.

He is everything that is wrong with America.
   97. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:00 PM (#4105955)
Ross made that look easy.
   98. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:04 PM (#4105959)
So, best case scenario, we have a couple days of McDonald-Ross-Sweeney outfields coming down the pike.

Yuck. And I'd guess Jason Repko is the guy who'd come up to help (with Thomas DFA'd).
   99. Dan Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:08 PM (#4105963)
Wade Davis looks pretty good as a reliever.
   100. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 13, 2012 at 04:11 PM (#4105967)
WTF? How is that a good idea?

It worked, but how is that a good idea?
