The Titanic left Southampton today...
   2. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:09 PM (#4103259)
Really excited to see Bard's first start.
   3. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:09 PM (#4103261)
How did Lawrie get to that ball so quickly?
   4. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:11 PM (#4103262)
Ugh. I thought Kyle Drabek sucked. Has he stopped sucking?
   5. Jay Seaver Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:14 PM (#4103266)
Let the second-guessing begin!
   6. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:15 PM (#4103269)
Past a drawn-in Youkilis, not especially well-hit.
   7. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:16 PM (#4103271)
Drabek does suck, but he has a good fastball. I assume he'll be decent for the first few innings while he's throwing heat. They'll get to him in the 3rd or 4th.
   8. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:17 PM (#4103272)
97 to Bautista. Bard's not ####### around.
   9. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:18 PM (#4103273)
Bard's bringing his good #### right now.

I wonder if he's a little too pumped - 96 and 97 in the first risks your good stuff deserting you by the 5th.
   10. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:20 PM (#4103277)
I think he's pumped.
   11. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:20 PM (#4103278)
98.2 to jam Bautista. damn.
   12. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:21 PM (#4103280)
Lucky ass little cueball.
   13. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:21 PM (#4103282)
He looks pretty confident out there. Let's hope he stays that way.
   14. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:22 PM (#4103284)
Pretty straight though. Not much movement.
   15. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:22 PM (#4103286)
Man, at-bat for my phone is like 5 minutes behind.
   16. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:22 PM (#4103288)
I keep hitting refresh on the game instead of here!
   17. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:23 PM (#4103291)
He started out 93 and gave up a hit. I'm wondering if that messed him up.
   18. Gamingboy Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:23 PM (#4103292)
He'd have been safe even if Punto didn't bobble that.
   19. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:24 PM (#4103293)
Pretty straight though. Not much movement.

Disagree. Pitch F/X had the 98 MPH pitch to Bautista with 10 inches of run.

2 grounders to third and a grounder to SS go for a single, double, and IF single. Bard ain't gettin' no love from the BABIP gods.
   20. villageidiom Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:24 PM (#4103294)
"singles on a ground ball to shortstop Nick Punto." Elaborate?
   21. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:24 PM (#4103296)
He'd have had a good play at 3rd.
   22. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:25 PM (#4103299)
"singles on a ground ball to shortstop Nick Punto." Elaborate?

Hard grounder to Punto's right. Deep in the hole. He bobbled it but Enc. would have been safe anyway.
   23. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:25 PM (#4103300)
"singles on a ground ball to shortstop Nick Punto." Elaborate?
Ground ball deep in the hole. Medium strength hit.
   24. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:25 PM (#4103301)
Disagree. Pitch F/X had the 98 MPH pitch to Bautista with 10 inches of run.

Well, with my own eyes I saw that it didn't move that much. I'll watch it again after the game, but it moved maybe an inch or two.
   25. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:26 PM (#4103303)
I like Bard's stuff. No one hit the ball hard against him, and the key hit was one where he missed a strikeout by a fraction of an inch - Lind hit the ball literally off the end of the bat.
   26. Fancy Pants Handle struck out swinging Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:26 PM (#4103304)
"singles on a ground ball to shortstop Nick Punto." Elaborate?

In Fenway they score that an error.
   27. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:26 PM (#4103305)
Bard looks good. I missed the Escobar at bat, but Lind hit a tough pitch and Encarnacion hit a tough pitch, plus Encarnacion was struck out on the pitch before and the ump chose to ignore it.
   28. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:26 PM (#4103306)
Evening. Seems like that could have been much worse.
   29. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:27 PM (#4103307)
I like Bard's stuff. No one hit the ball hard against him, and the key hit was one where he missed a strikeout by a fraction of an inch - Lind hit the ball literally off the end of the bat.

Agreed, and the first hit would probably have been an out if Youks was playing back a bit. Was he looking bunt? Or was he thinking that Bard's stuff would induce a weak grounder?
   30. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:27 PM (#4103309)
Bard's first pitch to Escobar caught too much of the plate, Escobar hit a ground ball single. It was the best hit ball of the inning.
   31. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:28 PM (#4103310)
That's a ton of sink on Drabek's two-seamer. And now run on the second pitch.
   32. villageidiom Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:28 PM (#4103311)
After the inning started with Bard not getting his slider over for strikes, it was good to see him stick with it to get Lawrie to chase a couple. That's the Bard we need.
   33. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:29 PM (#4103312)
The only reason Escobar's ball went past Youk is that he was playing in on the edge of the cutout, protecting against the bunt.
   34. Jay Seaver Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:30 PM (#4103314)
Hey, Youk hit the ball! Nice looking double.
   35. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:31 PM (#4103315)
Good to see Youkilis get off the schneid.
   36. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:33 PM (#4103320)
It's a shame that Ross is going to ground into a double play after those two great ABs.
   37. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:36 PM (#4103324)
Freddy Garcia just uncorked two wilded pitches in one AB.
   38. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:36 PM (#4103325)
Jesus, shut the GM up and let them call the game.
   39. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:37 PM (#4103326)
Or he'll strike out on ball 4.
   40. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:40 PM (#4103328)
There is no ####### way that got any of the plate.
   41. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:40 PM (#4103329)
According to PitchF/X it caught the corner
   42. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:41 PM (#4103330)
Salty at the bat is not inspiring confidence so far this year.
   43. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:41 PM (#4103331)
Pitch F/X can suck my balls.
   44. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:42 PM (#4103332)
I think I might be ready to see the Lavarnway era begin.
   45. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:43 PM (#4103333)
Bard's inducing a lot of grounders so far.
   46. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:44 PM (#4103334)
Is his name really pronounced "THAIMS", not like Marcus Thames?
   47. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:46 PM (#4103335)
Nice easy inning.
   48. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:47 PM (#4103336)
Freddy Garcia looks like regression personified.
   49. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:48 PM (#4103338)
And Garcia just got bailed out by the worst check swing call I've ever seen.
   50. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:49 PM (#4103339)
Hey Punto, atone for your shoddy defense!
   51. villageidiom Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:49 PM (#4103340)
Bard: 2 IP, 29 pitches. On pace for 131 pitch CG, or 7 IP at 100 pitches.
Drabek: 2 IP, 35 pitches. On pace for 158 pitch CG, or 5.2 IP at 100 pitches.
   52. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:50 PM (#4103341)
The Yankees will not win 90 games this year. Book it.
   53. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:50 PM (#4103342)
I think I might be ready to see the Lavarnway era begin.
Yeah, me too. The Salty experience is just one long "oh, he's gonna strike out now, isn't he?"
   54. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:51 PM (#4103343)
I think LNP was thinking "Nicky's goin deep tonight" on that swing.
   55. villageidiom Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:51 PM (#4103344)

95 is not 90.
   56. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:52 PM (#4103345)
I love the little tradition where catchers kill some time after an ump gets dinged.
   57. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:52 PM (#4103346)
Great AB, Ellsbury.
   58. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:53 PM (#4103347)
I think the Yankees might underachiever, but more to the tune of 91-92 wins than sub 90.
   59. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:55 PM (#4103351)
95 is not 90.
You had to call out my out clause within two minutes?
   60. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:57 PM (#4103353)
I think Bard ran over BABIP's dog.
   61. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:57 PM (#4103355)
Have we seen a change yet?
   62. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:59 PM (#4103356)
Have we seen a change yet?

Of what?
   63. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 07:59 PM (#4103357)
I think he threw 1 change up so far.
   64. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:00 PM (#4103358)
Nevermind. I'm an idiot.
   65. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:00 PM (#4103359)
Pitch F/X says 2 changeups.
   66. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:00 PM (#4103360)
Don says Bautista is due.
   67. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:01 PM (#4103361)
Bard is getting squeezed a bit.
   68. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:02 PM (#4103362)
I really wish Valentine would be more aggressive with infield shifts like Maddon.
   69. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:03 PM (#4103364)
Wow. Beat Bautista on three straight fastballs.

He's basically throwing exactly like Dan Bard, setup man.
   70. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:03 PM (#4103366)
NICE, Bard!
   71. Jay Seaver Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:04 PM (#4103367)
-- sigh --
   72. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:04 PM (#4103368)
There have already been a lot of bad 0-2 pitches this year.
   73. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:05 PM (#4103369)
That was a terrible 0-2 pitch to Lind.
   74. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:05 PM (#4103370)
That was a bad pitch.

I dunno, I'm not seeing the starter experiment right now. He's only got two pitches, and I'm skeptical he can keep throwing 97 when he needs it all night long.
   75. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:09 PM (#4103373)
Early action. Bobby is going to start him because he has too but he isn't going to give him any rope.
   76. Nolan Giesbrecht Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:09 PM (#4103374)
Just got in from work expecting Drabek to at least given up a couple, so I'm pleasantly surprised. How's he look so far?
   77. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:10 PM (#4103376)
McLelland is squeezing Bard, which isn't helping.
   78. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:10 PM (#4103377)
Drabek looks very good. His two-seam fastball is excellent. He lost the plate for a minute in the second, but he got it back before anything came of it.
   79. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:11 PM (#4103378)
I think that was a change. Missed location by a foot and a half.
   80. Nolan Giesbrecht Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:11 PM (#4103379)
Nice pitch that Lawrie fought off.
   81. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:11 PM (#4103380)
Every single ####### ball finds a hole.
   82. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:12 PM (#4103381)
Does every grounder need to have eyes?
   83. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:13 PM (#4103382)
Bard is getting squeezed because as Dan noted last night Saltalamacchia can't frame a pitch worth a damn.
   84. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:13 PM (#4103383)
Yeah Bard doesn't look great but he's not catching any breaks at all.
   85. Nolan Giesbrecht Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:13 PM (#4103384)
He lost the plate for a minute in the second

This essentially why he was so bad last year; just a complete loss of control and body mechanics.
   86. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:15 PM (#4103386)
Honestly the 0-2 single to Lind was really Bard's only notable failure in this game. He's just not catching any breaks.
   87. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:17 PM (#4103389)
I want Drabek to suck entirely because he wears number 4. Wear a proper number for crying out loud.
   88. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:18 PM (#4103390)
Amazing the difference between the Red Sox and Jays' infield positioning. Every grounder the Jays hit goes between sox infielders, every ball the Sox hit is at a properly faced infielder.
   89. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:18 PM (#4103391)
properly placed, too.
   90. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:19 PM (#4103392)
Honestly the 0-2 single to Lind was really Bard's only notable failure in this game. He's just not catching any breaks.
That's basically true - getting behind 3-0 to Bautista was really bad, too, though he worked out of it.

I just, I thought I'd see something that looked a little bit less like the Dan Bard of 2009-2011. He's the same pitcher - even with the same velocity - and I don't know if that's going to be sustainable the third time through the order.
   91. Gamingboy Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:20 PM (#4103393)
Broaadcast booth tour...
   92. Phil Coorey. Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:20 PM (#4103394)
So... Bard has been ok?

   93. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:20 PM (#4103395)
They all have the good face.
   94. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:22 PM (#4103398)
And NESN's broadcast is so bush league that it'd embarrass the Pawtucket Red Sox. I think I'm going to start watching the opposing team broadcasts.
   95. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:23 PM (#4103401)
A groundball that actually went for an out!!!11
   96. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:23 PM (#4103402)
Ok, it's not the same velocity. Bard averaged 97-98 in the bullpen, and now he's at about 95.

Well, if he can sit 95 and dial it up to 98 with movement all game, he's not going to need all that much secondary stuff.
   97. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:24 PM (#4103403)
I'm watching the Toronto broadcast. It's quite good.
   98. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:25 PM (#4103404)
Hey, nice changeup at 0-1.
   99. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:25 PM (#4103406)
I mean Bard hasn't even walked anybody. I don't see how anyone could call this a failure. 5 groundball hits don't make a bad outing, no matter how bunched they were. Add a bloop single by Escobar into shallow center. Bard has been fantastic, and the fact that Valentine had a releiver warming last inning is a ####### joke.
   100. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:26 PM (#4103407)
I'm watching the Toronto broadcast. It's quite good.
It's cromulent. Don't see anything special about it. But then I'm one of the rare Sox fans here who enjoys Don & Jerry.
