Has Bard always gotten this many groundballs? With better luck and positioning, this could be an 0-0 game.
   102. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:28 PM (#4103409)
It's cromulent. Don't see anything special about it.
It's composed almost entirely of baseball. That's pretty special these days.

Seeing Freddy Garcia fall back to earth makes me happy.
   104. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:29 PM (#4103412)
I like Sweeney's approach. Can someone teach him how to swing a bat?
   105. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:29 PM (#4103414)
Bard was a flyball pitcher in his first season or two as a reliever, but last year he started throwing more two-seamers and getting a lot more ground balls.
   106. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:30 PM (#4103415)
For some reason, I imagined Ryan Sweeney would be more...descript.

I suppose, but while they aren't terrible homers, some of the stuff about how they'd prefer young pitchers every day and twice on Sunday has been a little much. I'll eat something unpleasant if Buck and whoever the other guy is haven't said many times in the past how much they value experienced on the mound, yadda yadda.

But, again, I don't think it's bad.

Ugh.

Three fastballs right down the middle = 1 too many
   110. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:32 PM (#4103423)
That ball Salty hit was hit harder than anything Bard's given up all night.

I guess that's the Bard I remember. If he can keep up the groudballs and no walks, I like his chances.
   112. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:37 PM (#4103430)
Was that an 0-0 change?
   113. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:39 PM (#4103434)
And ironically the hardest hit ball of Bard is an out.
   114. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:40 PM (#4103436)
Am I crazy or is Bard throwing some kind of curve? That "slider" to Johnson was only 78 mph.
   115. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:41 PM (#4103437)
Wow. Whatever that pitch was, it was nasty.
   116. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:41 PM (#4103438)
Nice to see him feature the slider on 3-2. This has been the first inning he looks like a starter rather than just a reliever going as long as he can.
   117. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:43 PM (#4103440)
Bard's slider is sometimes almost like a curve. Even in relief sometimes he'd throw a bendy one at 80-82 MPH.
   118. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:46 PM (#4103444)
Can we please score some ####### runs now?
   119. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:48 PM (#4103447)
Nice AB by Ells there.
   120. Fancy Pants Handle struck out swinging Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:48 PM (#4103448)
Arite! Some runs now please. Thank you.
   121. Jay Seaver Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:50 PM (#4103452)
How, did Ellbury get a late start or something? Nice to see Pedroia busting out, though.
   122. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:50 PM (#4103453)
5 wild pitches for Freddy Garcia in 5 innings.
   123. Gamingboy Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:50 PM (#4103454)
Meanwhile, in Baltimore, Freddy Garcia is a madman who thinks the plate is everywhere but where it is.

pEdEy!
   125. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:51 PM (#4103456)
Looked like Ellsbury though that ball was catchable.
   126. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:51 PM (#4103457)
It drives me crazy when Pedroia swings and misses at stuff around his head, but man, he can hit it.

It drives me crazy when Pedroia swings and misses at stuff around his head, but man, he can hit it.

To be fair, that ball was belt high for any other player.
   128. Jay Seaver Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:52 PM (#4103463)
Run!

And gutsy/crazy move by Pedroia getting to third.
   129. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:53 PM (#4103465)
I'm glad we scored a run, but you'd think Gonzalez could hit the ball farther with a 2-0 count.
   130. Random Transaction Generator Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:54 PM (#4103466)
If Bautista's throw is 2 inches to the left, he gets Pedroia for sure.

NESN's broadcast's this season have been terrible in every way other than Jenny Dell.

You normally see the sideline reporter, but not when they throw it to the studio desk, etc.

I would be happy with a sac fly here. I suspect Youk will hit into a DP though.

Are they going to be showing these tweets all season? Ugh.

On the NHL Playoff Preview show on the other national sports network in Canada, they have the entire lower chryon dedicated to stupid tweets about the playoffs. As long as you put #TSN in there, and don't swear, you'll see it go by.

"go sens u rock playoffs wooo #TSN"

I guess it guarantees SOME eyeballs ("Did my tweet show up?"), but it's just ####### annoying.

So the Blue Jays just lent Frasor to the White Sox for a few months, I guess?

He broke the Jays record for pitching appearances, and then got dealt a week later.
In the process, he passes the record back to Luis Leal for innings pitched by a Jays-only pitcher.

   146. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 09:04 PM (#4103489)
Heidi Watney was more overrated than Derek Jeter's defense.
   147. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 09:05 PM (#4103490)
Bard looks cooked at 90 pitches. Looks like he overexerted himself a wee bit with the early gas. Still a good outing, BABIP be damned.

Please tell me Thomas will not be pitching to anyone but LHBs.

Love me that lefty reliever you can call on to come in and walk a lefty hitter for you. Maybe we can also trade Thomas to the Giants where people will think he's good.

Justin Thomas = Dennys Reyes.
   170. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 09:19 PM (#4103526)
Thank you for both giving away a winnable game and doing your best job to let the runners score to inflate Bard's ERA, Bobby. If you point to Bard's ERA and try and yank him from the rotation you can go #### yourself.
   171. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 09:19 PM (#4103527)
Dennys Reyes has pieces of Justin Thomas in his stool.
   172. Jay Seaver Posted: April 10, 2012 at 09:20 PM (#4103529)
Andrew Miller or Rich Hill has Thomas's job within two weeks, right?
   173. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 09:21 PM (#4103531)
Seriously, Valentine writes Punto into the lineup who costs Bard at least 1 run, probably 2 with his glove, then brings in JUSTIN THOMAS down by 2 with 2 runners on in the 6th inning. ####### stupid.

Looking up more info about this Heidi Watney woman:

She was a National Merit Scholar and attended the University of San Diego on an academic scholarship, where she graduated with honors in 2003[5].

Beautiful AND educated? You gotta lock that down.

Eric "Strangeglove" Thames doing his thang.

Nice hit by Sweeney. Pity about the size of the hole to dig out of.
   177. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 09:26 PM (#4103540)
That leadoff double would be a lot more exciting in a 2 run game.
   178. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 09:28 PM (#4103542)
Watching Cody Ross hit against righties makes me sad. On that note, apparently Crawford now has a sore left elbow and can't throw.

Casting aside personal preferences, I think Watney is, objectively, better looking than Dell. I'm not a guy for blondes but she's just stunning.

That said, I do prefer brunettes, and Dell isn't ridiculously outclassed. And pretty sure she has a better body.
   185. RB in NYC (Now Semi-Retired from BBTF) Posted: April 10, 2012 at 09:44 PM (#4103564)

The only stunning thing about Heidi Watney is how such an unremarkable looking woman has so many guys on the internet drooling all over their keyboards.
   189. Jay Seaver Posted: April 10, 2012 at 09:46 PM (#4103568)
Wow, Encarnacion got all of that one.
   190. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 09:48 PM (#4103569)
On top of that, Watney has fewer curves than the path between home plate and first base.

You do know that Aviles is hurt, right? I'm not sure who else he'd write into the lineup.

I don't even know why I'm pointing this out to you, because clearly your comments about Heidi Watney mark you as an insane person.
   196. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 10:08 PM (#4103587)
Actually I had missed the Aviles injury. Still disappointed at Punto's performance with the glove tonight.

Grr... Eck is saying that those two runs in the 6th dropped Bard from a good outing to one that was mediocre at best. Thanks, Justin Thomas.
   200. Dan Posted: April 10, 2012 at 10:32 PM (#4103596)
So Justin Thomas dropped Bard from good to mediocre?

That makes sense.
