Wait, did that hit Adrian in the cup?
   2. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:18 PM (#4134320)
Papi's transformation against lefties has really been impressive to behold.
   3. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:19 PM (#4134321)
Wait, did that hit Adrian in the cup?

Belt, maybe? Even Gonzalez would react more than that if it got him in the crotch.
   4. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:19 PM (#4134322)
Middlebrooks tries to be patient, but his pitch recognition isn't good enough for it to really work for him.
   5. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:20 PM (#4134323)
Middlebrooks' stats have really tumbled of late.
   6. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:20 PM (#4134324)
That's as bad as I've seen Middlebrooks look.
   7. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:21 PM (#4134325)
2 for his last 13 with 8 Ks now.
   8. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:21 PM (#4134327)
WMB's K-rate is up to about 1-in-3 now. He's looking more and more like he's just overmatched.
   9. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:21 PM (#4134328)
Looks like Moore found his stuff again.
   10. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:23 PM (#4134329)
Looks like Moore found his stuff again.
Moore's stuff is there. Just sometimes he has no idea where it's going, in or out of the zone.
   11. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:23 PM (#4134330)
On replay it looked outside but man I would've rung him up.
   12. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:24 PM (#4134331)
That's an outstanding at bat by Ross.
   13. Phil Coorey. Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:26 PM (#4134333)
Morning all
   14. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:26 PM (#4134334)
That's a cool graphic on the Tampa broadcast about Moore's fastball location (all middle and up).
   15. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:27 PM (#4134335)
I thought that was fair... nope, two inches foul.
   16. Phil Coorey. Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:28 PM (#4134336)
Inches - jesus
   17. Rafael Bellylard: The Grinch of Orlando. Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:28 PM (#4134337)
Morning, Phil.

Moore seems to vary between unhittable and unwatchable. In the same inning.
   18. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:30 PM (#4134338)
Moore is Daisuke. He looks thrilling when he's on but exasperating at other times.
   19. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:33 PM (#4134342)
I feel like Pedro would have plunked Scott here.
   20. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:34 PM (#4134343)
How likely is it that Joe Maddon used Scott's 2 for 4 against Doubront as a reason to move him up in the lineup?
   21. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:35 PM (#4134344)
You guys see the "Danny Duffy Rule" article at Beyond the Box Score?

Basically, left-handers who average 92 and above have an extremely high rate of success. Doubront's velocity spike this year has taken him to ~92.5.
   22. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:38 PM (#4134346)
That's encouraging.

Unrelated I really think Byrd needs glasses. The combination of how he looks at the plate and misplays in the outfield make me think he just doesn't see the ball well since the beaning.
   23. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:38 PM (#4134347)
I like what I'm seeing from Byrd, he really looks like he's settling in.
   24. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:39 PM (#4134349)
Doubront's k% has been really impressive this year, way higher than I expected.
   25. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:39 PM (#4134350)
Byrd!?
   26. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:41 PM (#4134352)
Oh my god, the sound of that ball hitting Rhymes elbow...
   27. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:41 PM (#4134355)
(they just played it on the Rays' broadcast)
   28. Rafael Bellylard: The Grinch of Orlando. Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:45 PM (#4134358)
It was pretty scary. He's had a pretty good sense of humor about it.
   29. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:48 PM (#4134360)
What I like about Doubront is that he seems to have a pretty good idea why he's doing. The velocity increase doesn't seem to flummox him like it does with Aceves.
   30. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:55 PM (#4134365)
When I look at Doubront's fastball velocity on fangraphs, it looks like his 2-seamer is pretty much exactly the same velocity as his 4-seamer. Is that plausible, or is that likely due to misclassification?
   31. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:55 PM (#4134366)
95!
   32. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: May 17, 2012 at 07:56 PM (#4134367)
I don't think the pitch/fx systems are any good at distinguishing 4-seam from 2-seam fastballs, and they often struggle with cutters too.
   33. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:00 PM (#4134369)
Seems kind of dumb for Price to retweet the suggestion to plunk Gonzalez.
   34. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:00 PM (#4134370)
That makes me wonder about how much stock we should really be putting into looking at small differences in fastball velocity. Guys who throw more 2-seamers are going to look like they have lower 4-seamer velocity just through misclassification. A bunch of guys seem to have higher velocity on their 2-seamer, which doesn't seem to make sense at all.
   35. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:01 PM (#4134371)
Man, it takes a lot to get a reaction out of Adrian Gonzalez.
   36. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:01 PM (#4134372)
That was crushed.
   37. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:02 PM (#4134373)
Looked like a strike from Tewksbury.
   38. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:02 PM (#4134374)
That foul went a long way.
   39. Phil Coorey. Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:02 PM (#4134376)
Another horrible call on AG
   40. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:02 PM (#4134377)
Nothing wrong with strike three. Gonzalez seems a little off his game, mentally.
   41. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:04 PM (#4134380)
It's whipping boy home run day!
   42. Phil Coorey. Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:05 PM (#4134381)
Can't field - occasionally hits!
   43. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:05 PM (#4134382)
Whoa that thing was tattooed. Sox have hit quite a few balls hard tonight.
   44. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:05 PM (#4134383)
It's whipping boy home run day!

Jed Lowrie in the Houston lineup tonight?
   45. Phil Coorey. Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:06 PM (#4134384)
Nothing wrong with strike three. Gonzalez seems a little off his game, mentally.

It looked low but I was on the phone to the ATM people trying to balance my machine

In any case - Ross!
   46. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:07 PM (#4134385)
Jed Lowrie in the Houston lineup tonight?
Lowrie is 8-for-46 with a 550 OPS in the last two weeks.
   47. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:15 PM (#4134393)
Hmm
   48. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:16 PM (#4134394)
Matt Barnes so far: 4IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 5K
   49. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:17 PM (#4134395)
Good throw would have had him.
   50. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:24 PM (#4134400)
Matt Moore has some serious eyebrows.
   51. Mattbert Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:26 PM (#4134403)
Serious cheese too. I went to the Trop for a start of his a couple weeks ago and was up close-ish watching him warm up. That's an easy 94-96 that he throws. He could probably get more if he really finished the pitch more aggressively, but man what an arm.
   52. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:26 PM (#4134404)
I really hate this compulsion NESN has to promote upcoming segments. I don't mind the segments themselves but it really feels likethey are being shoved down our throats in a way that they weren't in the past. Heidi never would have allowed this!
   53. Mattbert Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:33 PM (#4134409)
Fernando Rodney is a weird-lookin' dude.
   54. Mattbert Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:36 PM (#4134410)
Doubront will be annoyed that he muffed that ball--especially now that it's lead to a run--but a lot of young pitchers would still have tried to force that play and get the out at second. Good decision by Doubront to not do that.
   55. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:42 PM (#4134415)
I don't know where Doobs and Ashoppach were going on that 2-2 pitch.
   56. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:43 PM (#4134416)
Not a huge fan of this situation.
   57. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:44 PM (#4134418)
Nope.
   58. Rafael Bellylard: The Grinch of Orlando. Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:47 PM (#4134419)
Wow
   59. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:47 PM (#4134420)
That was a bit more excitement than I needed. Runs would be fun.
   60. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:48 PM (#4134422)
Yup.
   61. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:49 PM (#4134425)
6 innings of 2 hit shutout ball from Barnes so far.
   62. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:53 PM (#4134432)
Pedroia doesn't miss on fastballs that often.
   63. Jay Seaver Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:53 PM (#4134433)
Hey, NESN, show the infield. I'd like to see if defensive-alignment genius Joe Maddon has figured out that overshifting on Papi isn't that great an idea anymore.
   64. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:53 PM (#4134434)
I don't think either team has benefitted but this has been a poorly umpired game.
   65. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 08:57 PM (#4134437)
Doubront doesn't really do "efficient", does he?
   66. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:01 PM (#4134440)
If he can make it through 6 with 2ER, I'm happy.
   67. Dale Sams Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:04 PM (#4134443)
The TB feed angle is deceptive. The pitchers have killed a few doodle bugs for strikes, but they're closer than they look.
   68. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:04 PM (#4134444)
And that's it for Barnes: 6IP, 2H, 0R, 1BB, 5K.
   69. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:18 PM (#4134448)
Doubront didn't quite get the six innings but he pitched well enough. Hopefully Hill can get Scott nd get out of it.
   70. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:20 PM (#4134449)
Wouldn't mind of Hill would stop throwing curves at the letters.
   71. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:26 PM (#4134452)
I really love the way this team just stops doing anything on offense. It's like they flip a switch and they're done scoring for the night.
   72. Phil Coorey. Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:27 PM (#4134454)
Oh for ##### sake - another booth tour
   73. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:28 PM (#4134455)
What's Aviles upset about? That looked like an awfully good pitch.
   74. Jay Seaver Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:28 PM (#4134456)
Dear NESN -

I strongly suspect that once you've seen one booth/clubhouse, you've seen them all. Knock it off, please.

Yours,

New England (and beyond).
   75. Phil Coorey. Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:29 PM (#4134457)

Borderline comical

What's Aviles upset about? That looked like an awfully good pitch.

That looked like it was over the plate, as opposed to on the black.
   77. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:31 PM (#4134460)
Good. I was about to say if you are going to carry twelve pitchers no reason to let Pena face a righty at this point in the game.
   78. Mattbert Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:33 PM (#4134462)
I think that was the pent-up frustration of the entire game's worth of marginal ball-strike calls boiling over at the wrong moment.
   79. Phil Coorey. Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:35 PM (#4134465)
New England (and beyond).

(and Toowoomba)

Kill me
   80. Mattbert Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:36 PM (#4134466)
And that's it for Barnes: 6IP, 2H, 0R, 1BB, 5K.

Fewer Ks than innings pitched? What the hell is wrong with him?
   81. Phil Coorey. Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:36 PM (#4134468)
So, Punto now - lucky us
   82. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:37 PM (#4134469)
Shannon doesn't look old enough to have had any job for twelve years. I do like any job that allows her to leaf through a magazine while she works.
   83. Phil Coorey. Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:38 PM (#4134471)
"Here lies Phil Coorey - passed away while watching the his beloved Red Sox - rumour has it he could not handle another booth tour and lost the plot"

   84. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:38 PM (#4134472)
Atchison and Miller re a funny combo. Atchison looks like someones's dad and Miller looks like he should be in a cover band somewhere.
   85. Phil Coorey. Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:41 PM (#4134475)
Indiana just toweled the Heat - wow
   86. Jay Seaver Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:42 PM (#4134476)
No matter what Ortiz does, this would be a really good time for Adrian to make good on that promise.
   87. Phil Coorey. Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:42 PM (#4134477)
Some insurance would be nice
   88. Phil Coorey. Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:46 PM (#4134478)
That 1-0 pitch looked fine
   89. Phil Coorey. Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:47 PM (#4134480)
I'd be happy with an RBI single from AG here - screw the home run promise !
   90. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:47 PM (#4134481)
Ugh, Adrian.
   91. Phil Coorey. Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:48 PM (#4134483)
That was rubbish
   92. Mattbert Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:49 PM (#4134484)
Oh well, at least he had at good at-bat.
   93. Jay Seaver Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:52 PM (#4134486)
Runs! Woot!
   94. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:52 PM (#4134487)
Yay! Runs!
   95. Mattbert Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:52 PM (#4134488)
Shift that, ya bastids!
   96. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:52 PM (#4134489)
Big hit!
   97. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:52 PM (#4134490)
That was definitely a shift hit.
   98. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: May 17, 2012 at 09:53 PM (#4134491)
Nice to see the Tampa defensive alignment not work for once.
