The positives here are that Ross is not in CF. Aviles has a 1.008 OPS leading off. I predict that this will continue indefinitely.

Anderson is on the team as a pinch hitter. I like him a lot better than the other options.
   5. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 23, 2012 at 07:14 PM (#4114080)
We'll see if Byrd's .091 BABIP is a fluke or a sign that something's really wrong. His Infield Fly % is way up and FB% is way down. I don't know if it's real or not. I hope it's not.
   6. Jay Seaver Posted: April 23, 2012 at 08:09 PM (#4114102)
Man, even Remy's down. This team is a mess!

Interesting play on that ball by Parmalee.

Hell of a strike zone here.

Nice to see Aviles playing some competent SS this year. I'm always pleasantly surprised when he doesn't blow a play.

aviles has been a real bright spot. i want to make sure I remember when he's batting. 110 over a 25-5 winning binge

Saltalamacchia really can clean out hose low pitches. Anything up he has no chance but down low he can be trouble.

He probably won't compete for another MVP but it's nice to see Monreau doing well.
   19. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 23, 2012 at 08:53 PM (#4114141)
Nice feature on Westmoreland in the pregame show. They're sticking with "may play in minor league games this year" but it's just good to see him looking healthy.
   20. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 23, 2012 at 08:54 PM (#4114142)
And agreed on Morneau.
   21. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 23, 2012 at 08:58 PM (#4114144)
Nice base running by Sweeney, hosting all the way.

Is Doumit playing right?

There some nice base running by Sweeney. Christ.

Gamingboy, I forget, are you a Twins fan?

In general, yes. It's more of a case that I've seen these guy going up through the minors. I sometimes say that I root for the Twins players and the Orioles' laundry. And, of course, anybody playing the Yankees.
   24. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 23, 2012 at 09:08 PM (#4114151)
I'm going to stick with this until you people all agree with me, Jenny Dell is a massive downgrade from Heidi Watney.

FWIW, my son's neurosurgeon said one of the reasons why he always told parents it was better to operate sooner rather than later is that the older one gets, the less "elastic" the brain is in recovering from a major surgery, and so the recovery was much longer just to get back basic things like balance, coordination, etc. My son was mostly back to normal within 6 months of his surgery (aside from eye issues that are correctable with prism lenses/glasses), but he was 3 1/2 when he had his; I can't even imagine what it would be like coming back from major brain surgery at 19-20 y.o.

It's great that he's gotten this far--I really hope to see him in Fenway some day, but the fact he's OK at all is pretty close to a miracle in and of itself.
   26. Jay Seaver Posted: April 23, 2012 at 09:13 PM (#4114154)
The putrid record of this team is in no way the fault of David Ortiz.

   49. Darren Posted: April 23, 2012 at 09:46 PM (#4114199)
What a shock: Lester falls apart out of nowhere in an early-season game.

Hey, at least Ortiz is going to have a monster year. When he starts this well, it can only be good.

   50. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 23, 2012 at 09:47 PM (#4114201)
Perhaps the most frustrating thing about this season is the rapidity with which they cough up leads. The lead is gone in 3 or 4 batters. It's uncanny.

I hate to say this, but has Lester become unlikeable? It's got to be just frustration over how things have gone since last September, right?
   56. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 23, 2012 at 09:50 PM (#4114211)
Troy McClure should just punch Lester in the nuts.
   57. Gamingboy Posted: April 23, 2012 at 09:51 PM (#4114212)
The Twins broadcast has Tom Kelly inside the booth inside of Bert Blyleven. Also, they just showed a graphic that Jon Lester has the best WP amongst active starters, which still blows my mind for some reason.
   58. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 23, 2012 at 09:51 PM (#4114213)
MINNEAPOLIS--Daisuke Matsuzaka gave up a home run to the first batter he faced, Whit Merrifield of the Class A Wilmington Blue Rocks, in his first rehab start since undergoing Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery last June.

Matsuzaka, pitching for the Class A Salem Red Sox, unofficially touched 92 on the radar gun and threw 27 pitches in a two-run first inning. Wilmington came into the game batting .210 overall and had hit just two home runs in its first 15 games.

Matsuzaka's first pitch of the second inning also resulted in a home run by 21-year-old Geulin Beltre, who came into the game batting .157.

Hey, a Yankee fan did me a solid last year. It was the day of the final game, and this guy comes walking up the street in his Yankees hat. I'm thinking he's going to razz me about the Sox. So I try to head him off at the pass and tell him how pathetic it is, how disgusted I am at the Sox, how much they suck, blah blah blah. He just shook his head at me and said, "Hey, it's all for fun." It was the greatest thing anyone has ever said to me about baseball. It's all for fun.    93. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 23, 2012 at 10:08 PM (#4114255)
That was a great DP.

Also, I've tried to pay much more attention to the pitchers this year. How they're throwing, where the ball is ending up. Trying to identify pitches. It's looking for the small victories that makes the game fun. I liked baseball much more when I was a kid, looking at the back of bubblegum cards, at the numbers. When I'm screaming, it's just not fun. And there is no reason to watch when it's not fun. That's for me, at least.

Both the Sox and Twins looked good on that play. Ortiz hit it well, just right into the shift.
