Notes from PeteAbe about the Sox. Nothing earth shattering but I found it mildly interesting. Among other notes;

It was interesting to see literally the entire team watching some funny clips on MLB Network before batting practice on Thursday. Meanwhile Josh Beckett has taken to playing cards with teammates before games and Dustin Pedroia has swapped cribbage with Terry Francona for "Words With Friends" against Adrian Gonzalez.

I'm not here to tell you that the clubhouse is a model of togetherness. But this group does seem to be coming together a lot better in the last two weeks.

What's this? Dan Bard--the Red Sox closer--is starting today? I think I'm NOT shocked. I believe there is someone who has some owning up to do.

Here are nine people I can't stand:

Aviles, M, SS
Pedroia, D, 2B
Gonzalez, A, 1B
Youkilis, K, 3B
Ortiz, D, DH
Ross, C, RF
Shoppach, K, C
McDonald, D, LF
Byrd, M, CF

I like these guys way better. I think they can beat the other guys.

De Aza, A, CF
Ramirez, A, SS
Dunn, A, DH
Konerko, P, 1B
Pierzynski, A, C
Rios, A, RF
Viciedo, D, LF
Morel, B, 3B
Beckham, G, 2B

He's starting today, I still am skeptical he will make future starts. They're going to call up Cook for someone's spot in the rotation and unless Buchholz goes in the DL I don't see how Bard doesn't get shuttled back to the bullpen.

I'm not saying it is the right call but it is what I think will happen.

There's not a chance they pull a Joba on Bard just because of Aaron Cook. If Cook is on the big club and no one is injured, he's in the bullpen as a long man/occasional starter.

Also, Hill is up, Thomas is DOWN!

   9. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 27, 2012 at 07:53 PM (#4118066)
Ok I'll say it, this man-hug thing with Jim Rice and Matt Stairs is pretty funny.
   10. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 27, 2012 at 08:01 PM (#4118070)
Book it: 8-10 is the high-water mark of the season for this bunch of AAAA clowns.
   11. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 27, 2012 at 08:02 PM (#4118072)
"His last start may have been his best start of the year." Brilliant analysis there by Orsillo. One of his two starts may have been his best one.
   12. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 27, 2012 at 08:07 PM (#4118077)
Ok, I'll watch the game, one of you people come over and put together my new kitchen island.
   13. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 27, 2012 at 08:07 PM (#4118078)
I got my hate on. I'm not even gonna pay that much attention. I'd rather read Hemingway anyway.
   14. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 27, 2012 at 08:15 PM (#4118081)
These jerks couldn't hit the broad side of my mom.
   15. dirk Posted: April 27, 2012 at 08:15 PM (#4118082)
why is it a forgone conclusion that they'll call cook? he's been awful. 8 k's and 9 bb in 27 innings. whatever luck has helped him pitch to a .133 era with those peripherals is sure to dry up soon.
   16. Phil Coorey. Posted: April 27, 2012 at 08:27 PM (#4118088)
Nice pitch there - another 0-2 beauty
   17. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 27, 2012 at 08:29 PM (#4118090)
Morning Phil.

What is the deal with these 0-2 pitches? This is happening way too much.
   18. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 27, 2012 at 08:33 PM (#4118092)
Jesus he is hot.
   19. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 27, 2012 at 08:33 PM (#4118093)
Not a great sound, but great result.
   20. Phil Coorey. Posted: April 27, 2012 at 08:36 PM (#4118095)
Papi is just insane right now

What is the deal with these 0-2 pitches? This is happening way too much.

Not sure - there is too many unexplained things this month.
   21. Phil Coorey. Posted: April 27, 2012 at 08:43 PM (#4118100)
Another 0-2 hit
   22. Dan Posted: April 27, 2012 at 08:49 PM (#4118103)
77 MPH slider to De Aza? That's practically a curveball and a seperate pitch.
   23. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 27, 2012 at 08:54 PM (#4118109)
Danks has a good move to first.
   24. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 27, 2012 at 08:55 PM (#4118110)
Pedroia looks cute in his mittens and penguin cap.
   25. Dan Posted: April 27, 2012 at 09:03 PM (#4118120)
Bard squeezed on ball 2 to Ramirez. Should've been a K. That was abeautiful pitch, 96 on the black.
   26. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 27, 2012 at 09:12 PM (#4118125)
Dammit, Shoppach!
   27. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 27, 2012 at 09:12 PM (#4118126)
What a crap inning. Clearly if Bard was a true starter he would make sure his fielders did a better job...or do a better job of fielding himself.
   28. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 27, 2012 at 09:13 PM (#4118127)
That's a wild pitch? Shoppach has got to catch that.
   29. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 27, 2012 at 09:14 PM (#4118128)
Bard clearly pissed off the scorer of this game
   30. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 27, 2012 at 09:15 PM (#4118129)
That's a hell of a play by Aviles.
   31. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 27, 2012 at 09:15 PM (#4118130)
What a ########### of an inning. Good on Bard for getting out of it though.
   32. Dan Posted: April 27, 2012 at 09:15 PM (#4118131)
Aviles is as good as Jeter at tracking those Texas leaguers.
   33. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 27, 2012 at 09:16 PM (#4118132)
Aviles is as good as Jeter at tracking those Texas leaguers.

Is that a joke because he dropped one the other night.
   34. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 27, 2012 at 09:16 PM (#4118133)
I continue to be surprised at Aviles' defense at short
   35. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 27, 2012 at 09:17 PM (#4118135)
He is the best we've had on those since Offerman.
   36. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 27, 2012 at 09:17 PM (#4118136)
I have to say, Bard's had some crappy luck so far as a starter, but it's good to see he's looking poised out there. As a reliever the game could get away from him sometimes, but he looks composed as a starter.
   37. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 27, 2012 at 09:19 PM (#4118138)
How cold is it out there? The Boston's dressed like its 35 degrees out.
   38. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 27, 2012 at 09:20 PM (#4118139)
And Danks is in short-sleeves and sweating
   39. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 27, 2012 at 09:21 PM (#4118140)
It was 39 last night.
   40. Dan Posted: April 27, 2012 at 09:21 PM (#4118141)
According to weather.com it is 44º in Chicaco, "feels like" 37º.
   41. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 27, 2012 at 09:22 PM (#4118142)
45 according to the Google.
   42. villageidiom Posted: April 27, 2012 at 09:50 PM (#4118155)
Yeeehaw!
   43. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 27, 2012 at 09:51 PM (#4118156)
I wasn't expecting that from Mc Donald
   44. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 27, 2012 at 10:00 PM (#4118167)
Wow! Great stuff Pedey!

Winning streaks are fun.
   46. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 27, 2012 at 10:01 PM (#4118169)
Nice scoop by Gonzalez.
   47. villageidiom Posted: April 27, 2012 at 10:01 PM (#4118170)
From the link in #1:
Mike Aviles has hit probably seven balls this season that Jose Iglesias couldn't match if he hit the ball, picked it up and hit it again.
   48. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 27, 2012 at 10:02 PM (#4118173)
Missed that whole inning because I was talking to my wife. ####! Liking the Byrd trade so far.
   49. villageidiom Posted: April 27, 2012 at 10:16 PM (#4118182)
That's OK, this inning is a lot like that inning. Only later.
   50. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: April 27, 2012 at 10:19 PM (#4118184)
I know the White Sox are a fairly free-swinging team, but it's encouraging that Bard has only thrown 85 pitches through 6 innings. He was racking up higher pitch counts in his other starts.
   51. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 27, 2012 at 10:46 PM (#4118201)
I have to say that I think Bard looks to be making the adjustment much better than I expected him to. Obviously as well as he has pitched tonight I'd have to be an idiot to send by my prediction that it's his last start.
   52. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 27, 2012 at 10:52 PM (#4118206)
Uh, what just happened? I feel dirty.
   53. Textbook Editor Posted: April 27, 2012 at 10:52 PM (#4118207)
Bard and Dubront have been way, way better than I was hoping they'd be.
   54. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 27, 2012 at 10:52 PM (#4118208)
#52 is not in reference to #51, although that would be funny. It was in reference to McDLT's homer.
   55. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: April 27, 2012 at 10:54 PM (#4118209)
It bothers me that a seven run led in the ninth still doesn't feel comfortable.
   56. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: April 27, 2012 at 10:57 PM (#4118212)
53 runs over the past 6 games.
   57. The Piehole of David Wells Posted: April 27, 2012 at 10:59 PM (#4118214)
5 in a row? NO way they make it six. They suck.
   58. villageidiom Posted: April 27, 2012 at 11:27 PM (#4118236)
5 in a row? NO way they make it six. They suck.
Later this year when they're 141-20 you'll still be going for the reverse jinx, won't you?
