Lester seemed to get squeezed against Dunn.
   2. villageidiom Posted: April 28, 2012 at 08:17 PM (#4118722)
Who's in the booth with Orsillo tonight?
   3. villageidiom Posted: April 28, 2012 at 08:24 PM (#4118727)
OK, PeteAbe is in the booth.
   4. Dan Posted: April 28, 2012 at 08:24 PM (#4118728)
Pete Abe will be there for 5 innings then we get Nick Cafardo for 4 innings!
   5. Dan Posted: April 28, 2012 at 08:26 PM (#4118731)
If Remy is going to miss this many games every season with health issues, how can he keep the job? Just retire already.
   6. Phil Coorey. Posted: April 28, 2012 at 08:35 PM (#4118734)
Been on the phone the whole time during this game - love it when I'm busy but I miss the damn games!
   7. Dan Posted: April 28, 2012 at 08:38 PM (#4118735)
Rays down 2-0 early in Texas. Yankees of course already lost (even if Valverde almost blew the 7-2 lead).
   8. Dan Posted: April 28, 2012 at 08:40 PM (#4118738)
Abraham was actually not bad. Why the #### are they going to use Cafardo instead of letting him finish?
   9. Infinite Yost (Voxter) Posted: April 28, 2012 at 09:36 PM (#4118771)
I'm very sad that Vicente Padilla is in a 1-0 game in the 8th.
   10. villageidiom Posted: April 28, 2012 at 09:41 PM (#4118773)
Well, fortunately, Padilla is out of a 1-0 game in the 9th.
   11. Dan Posted: April 28, 2012 at 09:49 PM (#4118777)
Aceves hit 97 on back to back pitches.
   12. Dan Posted: April 28, 2012 at 09:51 PM (#4118778)
98????
   13. villageidiom Posted: April 28, 2012 at 09:57 PM (#4118780)
Third one-run victory of this streak, balancing their 0-3 record in one-run games to start the year. Excellent!
   14. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 02:42 PM (#4119068)
Continuing chatter?

-90 mph fastball Beckett cannot miss up in the zone. He's going to give up a lot more than three runs if he doesn't stop doing that.
-Looking like they'll squander a chance for a four-game sweep and to make up that last game in our expected record. Just like Patriots Day.
   15. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: April 29, 2012 at 03:08 PM (#4119090)
I like when B-R confirms my thoughts. In my head I feel like the Red Sox never hit Gavin Floyd, check B-R...Floyd is 6-0 with a 3.47 ERA (and dropping) lifetime against Boston.
   16. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 03:11 PM (#4119094)
Floyd perfect through 4 innings.
   17. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 03:11 PM (#4119095)
Floyd's been unhittable so far. The couple of times that Sox hitters have worked a deep count, he's thrown a perfect pitch to get out of it. He's painting with the fastball and the curve looks like what Beckett's curve used to be.
   18. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 03:16 PM (#4119099)
So...two perfect games within the span of a week and a half by one team? How crazy would THAT be?
   19. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 03:18 PM (#4119104)
Correct me if I'm wrong - a perfect game is where there are no hits, no walks, and no reached on error? And so far the Red Sox don't have any hits or any other batters reaching base by any means, so Floyd has a "perfect game"?
   20. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 03:21 PM (#4119107)
Still waiting for Adrian Gonzalez to really start hitting this year.
   21. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 03:22 PM (#4119109)
I get that the Sox needed to rest Youk and Salty in a day game after a night game, but I wish managers would stagger the rest instead of weakening the lineup at two positions in the same game.
   22. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 03:25 PM (#4119112)
Youkilis was originally in the lineup - he was scratched with a sore lower back. It wasn't a planned day off.
   23. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 03:27 PM (#4119116)
Yay! A baserunner.

But, again, if a pitcher allows baserunners via walk or HBP, but not by base hits, he has a "no-hitter", I believe. So Floyd is still working on a major accomplishment.
   24. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 03:28 PM (#4119118)
Pujols 0-4 today, he's down to .216 with no home runs yet. He's really off to a Crawfordian start for the Angels.
   25. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 03:43 PM (#4119128)
IF they don't get a hit next inning with Sweeney - Pedroia - Gonzo due up, they ain't gettin' one.
   26. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 03:50 PM (#4119132)
At least Beckett has pitched well since the Dunn homer.
   27. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 03:56 PM (#4119138)
A hit! A medium strength ground ball into a good location!
   28. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 03:56 PM (#4119140)
Moral victory! Maybe we can work towards a real victory now too...?
   29. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 03:56 PM (#4119141)
Surely this is the start of something great.
   30. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 03:57 PM (#4119143)
That's a ball that you'd think a no-hit utility IFer should field while playing 2B. If Escobar can't field that, what the #### is his purpose on an MLB team?
   31. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 03:58 PM (#4119145)
Is Gonzalez going to go back to hitting home runs at some point?
   32. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 03:58 PM (#4119146)
Gonzalez thought that 2-seamer was a changeup.
   33. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:00 PM (#4119148)
I really thought Pedroia would get home on that one, off the bat.
   34. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:02 PM (#4119150)
I was thinking in the same thing Mikael.

Cafardo shows his ignorance of the White Sox roster when talking about the Red Sox wanting Floyd out of the game so the pen can take over while Addison Reed is warming. He's an incredibly good young reliever.
   35. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:03 PM (#4119154)
Just switched my 2nd screen from Yankees-Tigers to Nats-Dodgers. Gotta see Harper again and some more Kemp and Gio Gonzalez won't hurt either.
   36. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:03 PM (#4119155)
On the replay, it looks like Rios got to the ball extremely well, and hit the cut-off man. And Ross makes it academic.
   37. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:04 PM (#4119157)
I've been watching the A's-O's for fantasy team reasons. Balfour just blew a save for Colon and cost me a very important** W.

**The importance of my team's week-to-week fantasy results may vary depending on if you are me or not me.
   38. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:04 PM (#4119158)
Do we have anyone who can hit for Punto here? Cause this AB could make or break this game.
   39. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:05 PM (#4119159)
I've been watching the A's-O's for fantasy team reasons. Balfour just blew a save for Colon and cost me a very important** W.

Did Reddick look as good as his line in the box score?
   40. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:06 PM (#4119160)
We could hit for Punto, but we don't have anyone to field for him.
   41. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:06 PM (#4119161)
Did Reddick look as good as his line in the box score?
He's hitting the ball really well. His strike zone judgment is bad. He's basically the good version of Jeff Francoeur.
   42. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:09 PM (#4119164)
Ugh.
   43. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:13 PM (#4119167)
Cespedes, also, looks awesome. I can't overstate how much fun he is to watch, and he's been striking out at a manageable rate ever since the first week of the season.
   44. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:14 PM (#4119170)
It seems like a team with an injury prone 3B should be carrying more than one backup infielder. Call me crazy, but it'd be nice to actually have the option to PH for Punto or someone to take over if another IFer has to leave the game.
   45. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:15 PM (#4119171)
Yeah I've watched quite a few A's games myself, mostly to watch Reddick and Cespedes. Cespedes has indeed been everything he was expected to be.
   46. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:18 PM (#4119177)
If you replace Anderson the roster with Spears, the PH options on the bench are Salty and McDonald. The problem for the Red Sox is more the quality of their reserves (and the need to carry 12 pitchers).
   47. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:18 PM (#4119178)
What kind of injections is Cafardo talking about? Something like Toradol?
   48. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:20 PM (#4119181)
Dunno, don't have the sound on.
   49. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:21 PM (#4119183)
OK, when you're walking Alejandro de Aza it's time to get the hell out of the game.
   50. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:26 PM (#4119187)
Gio Gonzalez is the anti-Red Sox pitcher: hitters are 0-44 against him when he gets to a 2 strike count. Information courtesy of Vin Scully.
   51. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:28 PM (#4119188)
Case in point: Beckett's complete inability to put away Lillibridge after reaching a 1-2 count.
   52. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:29 PM (#4119193)
Valentine comes out to pull the starter later than he should, as usual.
   53. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:30 PM (#4119194)
I guess Padilla threw yesterday and has more control problems than Atchison. And Tazawa threw three innings two days ago.

I guess.
   54. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:32 PM (#4119195)
Atchison is a perfectly cromulent choice to come in and face a righty here. He's really a ROOGY type.
   55. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:34 PM (#4119197)
2 outs with the bases loaded and a righty up in a game we're already trailing by 2 runs is basically the best situation to use Atchison if he's going to be part of this pen. He's good against RHH, he throws strikes, and he won't have to face a lefty there and is unlikely to walk in the run.
   56. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:34 PM (#4119199)
The poor move will come if Valentine leaves Atch in to face Dunn and Pierzynski.
   57. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:36 PM (#4119201)
Hopefully BV goes to Hill for the 8th inning.
   58. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:39 PM (#4119207)
McDonald needs to hit for Sweeney against Thornton. Sweeney and Thornton both have extreme splits.
   59. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:41 PM (#4119211)
I enjoy having a manager who actually uses his bench during games for things other than pinch running for Ortiz and Gonzalez.
   60. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:44 PM (#4119213)
Well, the Red Sox will have Pedroia - Gonzalez - Ortiz up to face the White Sox' struggling young closer. Hopefully Hill (?) can hold it to a 2 run game.
   61. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:46 PM (#4119216)
Bobby V's pushing the right buttons today. Stayed with Beckett a touch too long, but it wouldn't have been inordinate if Lillibridge didn't put up a 12 pitch AB.
   62. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:47 PM (#4119217)
Hill showing good velocity from his low 3/4 arm slot.
   63. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:48 PM (#4119219)
Hill's not commanding the breaking ball.
   64. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:49 PM (#4119223)
Bobby V's pushing the right buttons today.
Yup. We just don't have the talent right now on the bench to really make it work.
   65. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:49 PM (#4119224)
Hill's not commanding anything.
   66. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:50 PM (#4119227)
Well, the Red Sox will have Pedroia - Gonzalez - Ortiz up to face the White Sox' struggling young closer.
I think Ventura will stick with Thornton.
   67. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:52 PM (#4119229)
I think Ventura will stick with Thornton.

No way.
   68. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:53 PM (#4119231)
I don't think they have a chance on Ramirez there regardless, but Hill needs to let the third baseman field that one.
   69. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:53 PM (#4119232)
He should, at least. I thought they were still committee-y in Chicago.
   70. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:53 PM (#4119233)
Hill has rebounded nicely since falling behind Pierzynski 2-0.

He needs to leave that ball to Punto though. He wouldn't have a play on it.
   71. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:54 PM (#4119234)
He should, at least. I thought they were still committee-y in Chicago.

My early impression is that Ventura has been very by-the-book. And he's named Hector Santiago the closer. So I think he'll stick with that.
   72. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: April 29, 2012 at 04:55 PM (#4119237)
That was not an impressive performance from Hill. Three lefties faced, fell way behind all of them and walked two of them.
   73. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 05:00 PM (#4119239)
Ugh. And it's two guys I really want to do well.
   74. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 05:00 PM (#4119240)
I think Ventura's correct move would be to stay with Thornton, especially with Gonzalez and Ortiz due up 2nd and 3rd, but I would be quite surprised to see anything other than Santiago.

Unless Tazawa takes away the save situation.
   75. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 05:01 PM (#4119242)
Pretty crazy that they aren't hitting for Escobar here. Guy is a complete zero at the plate, and they could put this game on ice with some insurance here.
   76. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 05:05 PM (#4119244)
Just tuned into the MIL-STL game during the inning break, and I didn't realize John Axford had developed such a high quality dirtbag look as a closer.
   77. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 05:06 PM (#4119246)
Well you were right Mikael.
   78. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 05:07 PM (#4119248)
St Louis loses on a delayed double steal.
   79. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 05:07 PM (#4119249)
Just tuned into the MIL-STL game during the inning break, and I didn't realize John Axford had developed such a high quality dirtbag look as a closer.

Yeah, it's something else. Especially funny because the pictures of him from when they first brought him up have him looking basically 100% clean cut. For example.
   80. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 05:07 PM (#4119251)
(failed) delayed double steal.
   81. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 05:08 PM (#4119253)
I don't think I've ever seen a game end that way.
   82. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 05:08 PM (#4119255)
Gonzalez is cold as ice.
   83. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: April 29, 2012 at 05:09 PM (#4119256)
Well, I wouldn't have complained about 10-11 a week ago. And Floyd wasn't losing today.

Just hopefully they'll keep playing at this level.
   84. Dan Posted: April 29, 2012 at 05:09 PM (#4119257)
Oh well. Floyd just had a great game. It's hard to complain about winning 3 of 4.
