Lineups. I can't imagine what I would have said if you told me "on May 31st the Red Sox will have Scott Podsednik leading off." Actually I can imagine what I would have said, it would not have been pleasant.

Salty back in there, Pedroia still a no go for a few days, Red Sox Nation prays for the health of Mike Aviles and Nick Punto then weeps;

RED SOX (26-24)
Podsednik CF
Nava LF
Gonzalez 1B
Ortiz DH
Youkilis 3B
Saltalamacchia C
Sweeney RF
Aviles SS
Punto 2B
Pitching: RHP Josh Beckett (4-4, 4.15)

TIGERS (23-27)
Berry CF
Boesch RF
Cabrera 3B
Fielder 1B
Young DH
Avila C
Peralta SS
Kelly LF
Worth 2B
Pitching: RHP Max Scherzer (4-3, 5.67)

Jeez, just disable Pedroia and bring up Iglesias already. We are one hit batsman away from "Will Middleinfielder".
   3. Jay Seaver Posted: May 31, 2012 at 07:30 PM (#4144704)
That appears to be the quietest argument-leading-to-an-ejection ever. Maybe NESN just didn't show the good stuff.

The Tigers broadcast didn't show any good stuff, either. I tuned in late, so I have no idea why that ejection happened.

Awesome!

   6. Jay Seaver Posted: May 31, 2012 at 07:39 PM (#4144719)
Sweeney is pretty awesome out there.

The coach was absolutely right on the argument; you'd think he'd be a little more forceful.

Remy said Brookens went into the clubhouse between innings and saw the replay of the blown call at first, and came out the next inning and said something about it to the ump.
   8. Jay Seaver Posted: May 31, 2012 at 07:41 PM (#4144723)
ASSAULTALAMACCHIA!
   9. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: May 31, 2012 at 07:41 PM (#4144724)
Saltalamonkeyface!
   10. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: May 31, 2012 at 07:42 PM (#4144725)
And there's Sweeney putting bat on ball nicely.
   11. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: May 31, 2012 at 07:44 PM (#4144726)
And here's Punto to hit into a DP.
   12. Jay Seaver Posted: May 31, 2012 at 07:48 PM (#4144729)
Were I at the ballpark, I might applaud that strikeout. Way to mitigate the damage of being in the lineup, Punto!
   13. Jay Seaver Posted: May 31, 2012 at 07:49 PM (#4144731)
The inexplicable excellence of Scott Podsednik continues!
   14. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: May 31, 2012 at 07:52 PM (#4144736)
Punto seems like the kind of player that needs to get regular playing time before he produces at the plate. So, when Pedroia comes back they should send him to Pawtucket, and call him back up in emergencies.

And if he doesn't clear waivers on the way down, even better.
   15. Jay Seaver Posted: May 31, 2012 at 07:57 PM (#4144742)
Beckett just can't help but make things exciting, can he?
   16. Jay Seaver Posted: May 31, 2012 at 08:07 PM (#4144746)
Nuts.
   17. Jay Seaver Posted: May 31, 2012 at 08:20 PM (#4144751)
I like this Saltalamacchia guy a lot.
   18. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: May 31, 2012 at 08:24 PM (#4144752)
Sweeney contributes with a foul tip.
   19. Chip Posted: May 31, 2012 at 08:33 PM (#4144756)
The development of Josh Beckett, Junkballing Righty is not a happy thing. Pitching like Rodrigo Lopez instead of Roger Clemens is not a longterm recipe for success.

Punto's walk-up music is "Mother"? That seems strange to me for some reason.
   21. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: May 31, 2012 at 08:38 PM (#4144758)
I was at the game on Monday, and when they played it before his first AB, a few people in my section laughed, and one commented that Punto's stock just went up a bit. Until after the AB.
   22. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: May 31, 2012 at 08:39 PM (#4144759)
Saltalamonkeyface's music is...you'll never guess unless you've been to a game this year. It's horrific and unlikely.
   23. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: May 31, 2012 at 08:45 PM (#4144761)
OK, it's Rock Me Amadeus.
   24. Jay Seaver Posted: May 31, 2012 at 08:45 PM (#4144762)
But also hilarious. Kind of makes up for Youk apparently not using Biz Markee anymore (at least, he didn't on Sunday).
   25. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: May 31, 2012 at 08:47 PM (#4144763)
They played in Monday, for at least one of his AB's.
   26. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: May 31, 2012 at 08:48 PM (#4144765)
Jenny Dell. Cartman.
   27. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: May 31, 2012 at 08:48 PM (#4144766)
A good throw would have gotten him there, I think. Naturally, instead the throw hits him and he gets to third.
   28. Jay Seaver Posted: May 31, 2012 at 08:49 PM (#4144767)
Is that two balls off Tiger heads that didn't come from Josh Beckett?
   29. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: May 31, 2012 at 08:57 PM (#4144773)
Young's HR on Monday was the softest fly ball I ever saw get hit over everything in LF. Then, either yesterday or Tuesday, he hit a line drive 2/3 up on the wall that would have been a HR anywhere else.
   30. Dan Posted: May 31, 2012 at 09:04 PM (#4144776)
When was the last time Beckett had a start without any strikeouts?
   31. Jay Seaver Posted: May 31, 2012 at 09:09 PM (#4144779)
Matsuzaka still not walking anybody in this second rehab stint, at least. Not sure whether I'd like him to replace Bard or Buchholz in the rotation right now.
   32. Dan Posted: May 31, 2012 at 09:11 PM (#4144781)
Kalish played CF and batted 3rd for Portland tonight and went 1-4 with a 2B and a BB.
   33. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: May 31, 2012 at 09:11 PM (#4144783)
Neither. Both pitched better their last start.
   34. Jay Seaver Posted: May 31, 2012 at 09:12 PM (#4144785)
That kind of looked foul to me.
   35. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: May 31, 2012 at 09:13 PM (#4144787)
It bounced fair.
   36. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: May 31, 2012 at 09:15 PM (#4144789)
I just rewound it and looked at it again. It was close to the line. Hard to see from the angle they showed.
   37. Dan Posted: May 31, 2012 at 09:37 PM (#4144802)
oh come onnnnn
   38. Dan Posted: May 31, 2012 at 09:48 PM (#4144810)
Gonzalez really should have gotten that tying run in. He had pitches to hit. When does this "slump" finally end?
   39. Good cripple hitter Posted: May 31, 2012 at 10:22 PM (#4144835)
Miguel Cabrera steals a base, then Prince Fielder hits a triple. If Delmon Young turns this AB into a walk, I'm going to buy a lottery ticket.
   40. Gamingboy Posted: June 01, 2012 at 08:45 PM (#4145655)
Attention: In Flushing, Johan Santana has given up no-hits after 6. Worries about pitch count though.
