Franklin Morales back to the bullpen.
   2. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 17, 2012 at 07:20 PM (#4185341)
Jon Lester stepping up again.
   3. Chip Posted: July 17, 2012 at 07:22 PM (#4185342)
Jon Lester's BABIP 'bad luck' and/or general suckiness and inability to extricate himself from a situation once it starts going bad shows no sign of abating.
   4. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 17, 2012 at 07:24 PM (#4185347)
Big DP to get out of that mess.
   5. Chip Posted: July 17, 2012 at 07:24 PM (#4185348)
Boy, talk about getting bailed out.
   6. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 17, 2012 at 07:31 PM (#4185354)
Nice start to the bottom of the inning.
   7. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 17, 2012 at 07:32 PM (#4185355)
If I'm Bobby Nava is my DH against RHP and it's Ross against LHP.
   8. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 17, 2012 at 07:34 PM (#4185357)
Ellsbury 1b, SB
Crawford 1b, SB

Somewhere Theo is smiling. That's gotta be the first time they've both done that in the same game.
   9. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 17, 2012 at 07:37 PM (#4185361)
Homer to LCF last night, ringing single to center tonight. Nice nice nice.

Don't think Gonzo will join the single/steal combo.
   10. Chip Posted: July 17, 2012 at 07:47 PM (#4185370)
Nice 0-2 pitching there, Jon - near HR foul on the first one, near HR fair on the second for the Wall Ball single.
   11. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 17, 2012 at 07:49 PM (#4185372)
2-1pitch goes against Lester, let's watch him lose it now!
   12. Chip Posted: July 17, 2012 at 07:54 PM (#4185381)
Even more impressive pitching against the lefty. Absolutely awful location, middle of the plate and up where a slap hitter can easily get slappy on it.
   13. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:04 PM (#4185389)
Now he's letting Adam Dunn steal?

Yeesh.
   14. Chip Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:04 PM (#4185390)
And now he walks the leadoff guy in the third. And pays absolutely no attention to Dunn at first, allowing him to easily steal second.

Lester has pitched like a rookie all year, and it's only getting worse.
   15. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:04 PM (#4185391)
Good god, this guy is a joke to watch pitch right now
   16. Chip Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:07 PM (#4185397)
It's no wonder Konerko hits about .999 against Lester - in both ABs so far Lester has gotten to two strikes ahead in the count, and then missed badly to let Konerko work his way back in and get a pitch to put in play. Just lucky the second time the line drive was right at Gonzalez.
   17. Chip Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:10 PM (#4185400)
Bailed out by Aviles, after another lefty gets a great pitch to hit.
   18. Darren Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:13 PM (#4185407)
68 pitches through 3--not pretty. He's just not having a good year.
   19. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:14 PM (#4185409)
Nice base running by Jacoby.
   20. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:20 PM (#4185412)
That was an awful call.
   21. Chip Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:24 PM (#4185415)
Whee! Another leadoff hitter in scoring position!
   22. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:26 PM (#4185418)
Four pitch walk to the number nine hitter...sigh.
   23. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:28 PM (#4185421)
I don't remember seeing an umpire stand on the mound that long during a visit.
   24. Chip Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:32 PM (#4185426)
Good stuff Lester, good stuff.
   25. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:32 PM (#4185427)
Atta boy Jon.

Atta boy Ben.
   26. Chip Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:33 PM (#4185429)
I mean, that pitch couldn't have been more awful - right down the middle, belt high.
   27. Srul Itza Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:33 PM (#4185430)
Youk!
Youk!
Youk!

nyuk, nyuk, nyuk,
   28. Darren Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:33 PM (#4185431)
Wow, he really stinks right now. And of course, Youkilis is really good.
   29. Chip Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:37 PM (#4185437)
91 pitches through four innings. 91!
   30. Darren Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:40 PM (#4185445)
maybe they'll take him out!
   31. karlmagnus Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:42 PM (#4185451)
Never mind, this kind of performance will deprive LL/Ben of any excuse to trade our best young guys for Dempster, and Lester should be eminently tradeable for a big haul of young talent since the buyers will look at Youk and assume that Lester only needs to get out of Boston to become an ace. They may be right, but I'm fed up with watching him.

Much prefer Beckett, who is occasionally good and may improve now Youk isn't there to nag him.
   32. Chip Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:48 PM (#4185458)
And they do take him out.
   33. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:48 PM (#4185459)
Everything about this season just sux
   34. Jay Seaver Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:57 PM (#4185472)
OK, after that play, I want the score box back in the upper-left.
   35. Jay Seaver Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:58 PM (#4185476)
Hey, this guy looks like that outfielder the Rays used to have.
   36. Answer Guy. Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:58 PM (#4185479)
OK, where's the six game skid that puts this season out of its misery? It always seems right around the corner...
   37. karlmagnus Posted: July 17, 2012 at 08:59 PM (#4185481)
Ellsbury and Crawford don't suck. Great to have them back. Is Ellsbury a FA this year? -- if so the FO had better open their wallets, though fortunately not as wide as they'd have had to last year.
   38. Jay Seaver Posted: July 17, 2012 at 09:01 PM (#4185483)
Very nice grab. It's that sort of night.
   39. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 17, 2012 at 09:01 PM (#4185484)
Jesus - nice catch
   40. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 17, 2012 at 09:02 PM (#4185485)
Sox have one more year of Ellsbury , Karl.

At least you have the South Africa cricket test series to look forward to ....
   41. karlmagnus Posted: July 17, 2012 at 09:06 PM (#4185488)
Yes, though it's too short at only three matches. Should be close, either way -- SA are good.

Glad we have Ellsbury for 2013. The one plus about this season is the young guys, at last some new good ones after years of drought.
   42. Jay Seaver Posted: July 17, 2012 at 09:43 PM (#4185553)
Idle question I'll ask now as I head up to French Canuckistan for three weeks on Thursday: When Pedroia comes off the DL, does it make sense to keep Pedro Ciriano around as the mostly-starting shortstop if he's still hitting well?
   43. Jay Seaver Posted: July 17, 2012 at 09:47 PM (#4185563)
Nice job by Tazawa tonight, at least.

I can't imagine it is. As much as I would like to believe in Ciriaco there is nothing in his history to suggest this is legit. Aviles can be frustrating but he's been tolerable and I think a good bet to be considerably better than Ciriaco going forward.
   45. Jay Seaver Posted: July 17, 2012 at 09:53 PM (#4185573)
Yeah, I figured as much. I wonder if it might be different if Little Nicky Punto wasn't signed to a two-year contract (why, again?). He's not too expensive to cut, but that certainly seem to indicate the Sox think he's valuable.
   46. Chip Posted: July 17, 2012 at 09:54 PM (#4185576)
Hunting black flies, Jay?
   47. Jay Seaver Posted: July 17, 2012 at 09:57 PM (#4185583)
The Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, actually. One of the coolest film festivals around, especially if you like sci-fi/horror/martial arts stuff, and they continue to give me a media pass to cover them for eFilmCritic.
   48. Jay Seaver Posted: July 17, 2012 at 09:59 PM (#4185588)
Oooh, going from squandering to teasing!
   49. Chip Posted: July 17, 2012 at 10:00 PM (#4185589)
That HR makes Lester's performance that much more annoying.
   50. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 17, 2012 at 10:10 PM (#4185615)
Given how this game has gone coming to bat in the ninth down two is pretty nice. Crawford had a little flair for the dramatic last year, let's get him an AB.
   51. Jay Seaver Posted: July 17, 2012 at 10:17 PM (#4185642)
Ah, nuts.
   52. Jose Needs an Absurd Ukulele Concert Posted: July 17, 2012 at 10:17 PM (#4185644)
Alas. Nice job once again by Jon Lester.
