Feel free to use this thread to post rumors, thoughts, opinions, etc on this season or the offseason.

Still can't make myself think about it too much yet though.

Me neither.

In a way, last Wednesday felt like a series finale and I can barely process that teams are actually going to play competitively again in a few months.
   3. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: November 08, 2016 at 02:33 PM (#5348449)
My opinion is that this season was awesome.

EDIT: Oh, no, wait - that's not my opinion. That's a fact.

Thoughts I was having last night instead of thinking about the election. With the current roster, here's how I see a possible breakdown of playing time, with the caveat that things will change:

Contreras c 80 games
Montero c 50 games
Schwarber c 30 games, lf 100 games, dh 10 games
Rizzo 1b 150 games
Baez 2b 100 games, ss 20 games, 3b 20 games
Russell ss 140 games
Bryant 3b 140 games, 1b 10 games
Zobrist 2b 60 games, lf 60 games, rf 20 games
Almora cf 100 games
Heyward rf 60 games, cf 60 games
Soler rf 80 games

Szczur & Candelario also on roster

My totals are 160 games for each position. figuring out the other 2 is no big deal as these won't be exact numbers anyway, but this still looks like a 100 win line-up with plenty of depth even without Dex.

Good, thorough season wrap-up, Moses.
   6. Moses Taylor loves a good maim Posted: November 08, 2016 at 02:52 PM (#5348490)
There's nothing unreasonable in those numbers. I do think this is the offseason Soler is traded*, regardless of what happens with Fowler. I know Schwarber said he still plans on catching, but we'll see how long it lasts (I have a feeling the Cubs really don't want to deal with his defense back there having any sort of impact on the pitching).

*Still no idea for what though. There was talk of a TB SP in one of the threads, but he's not getting it done on his own. What's Tyson Ross's status? He was hurt/bad last year, but the Cubs reportedly have always liked him. Gray's stock has fallen.
**Guess on his contract? Law put it around $20mil/season, MLB Trade rumors predicts 4/$64 (to the Cards; DON'T DO IT DEX). What's the most you'd want the Cubs to pay?

Recap: best season ever.

My wrapup wasn't quite as good as yours, Moses.
   8. Moses Taylor loves a good maim Posted: November 08, 2016 at 02:55 PM (#5348496)
I expect any FA signings for the Cubs to be pitchers. Probably nothing too crazy, but maybe they'll splurge for Jansen or Champan. Any specific guys interest anyone?

Does Wood come back or try to start elsewhere?
   9. Man o' Schwar Posted: November 08, 2016 at 03:14 PM (#5348525)
I don't think there's any way the Cubs come out of this offseason without signing a big name closer. Chapman, despite his Game 7 problems, certainly contributed to the Cubs success in the postseason, and there are too many questions around guys like Edwards, Strop, and Rondon as permanent stopper-type relievers at the back of the pen.

The bullpen is really the team's only weakness at this point, so I'll be shocked if they don't use some of that extra playoff money to add an arm or two.

(And put me in the camp that wants Fowler back - he seemed to shine with the Cubs, the city obviously loves having him, and adding Fowler to the OF mix frees them up to use Soler as a bargaining chip to improve the pen or whatever else they feel like doing.)
   10. Brian C Posted: November 08, 2016 at 03:17 PM (#5348527)
I don't see why they wouldn't make a solid bid for Chapman. He fills a need, he's as good at it as anyone else they could get will be, and, well, it's just money. I don't really see a reason not to (and no, I don't think his domestic incident is much of a factor, or they wouldn't have acquired him in the first place).

Wrapup: The baseball season is over and I feel extremely content.
   12. Zonk isn't banned, he's under review Posted: November 08, 2016 at 03:32 PM (#5348549)
I'm surprised at how quickly I've rounded into hot stove shape...

A's LOOGY Marc Rzepczynski is one I'm one targeting -- as some noted, partially in order to corner the market on Zs -- but also because he's a 'pure' LOOGY and the pen could use one of those.

I wouldn't mind kicking the tires on Drew Storen, but my understanding is that his velocity has taken a nosedive so he may not be quite right.

LOOGYs are by definition impure. [grumbles at cloud]

What kind of silly Cubs merch did you guys buy?

I picked up a World Series Champions shirt at Meijer here in Michigan last weekend. I really want to get a poster of the Tribune front page from the next day, but $60 shipped seems really steep. I've got a bunch of other crap like sweatshirts, pins, and DVDs bookmarked. Hoping for some sort of holiday sale in the coming weeks to so I can get maximum Cubs garbage for my dollar.
   15. The Honorable Ardo Posted: November 08, 2016 at 05:01 PM (#5348672)
The Cubs need Kenley Jansen. Besides that, I'm agnostic; wake me up in April. And PRAISE THEO!

*I don't think it's yet been noted on Primer that the Cubs' victory parade was the largest public gathering in the history of the United States.

$263.66 worth of stuff from the MLB shop, but that includes stuff for the whole family (3 shirts for me, 2 for the 5 year old superfan, a book, a pennant, etc). And one of these (but can't find the site I order from, cause I got Cubs colors).

EDIT: That does not include any DVDs or videos of the games/special championship thing yet to be produced. I will be buying that/those as well. And yeah, a bunch of newspapers (like 2 or 3 of each available around my place). Maybe will frame one of them.

I was there, with the wife and kids. Good times. Only went to parade, and got home in time to watch rally on TV.

It's funny, for as much of a baseball fan as I am, I'm not a merch guy, as those of you who have met me have seen. I don't even own a cap and jersey to wear to games. Never seemed all that important to me, I guess. I do think I will have my Game 5 ticket framed along with one of the rally towels they were handing out at Wrigley (that didn't catch on at all).
   19. Moses Taylor loves a good maim Posted: November 08, 2016 at 05:14 PM (#5348690)
I'm not usually one either. But I was drunk the next day, and the wife/kids were all for it. I'm not a jersey guy though. No idea why I need 3 different champ shirts, but well, here we are.

You're a lucky man. I can only hope one day to have a family that is all for me still being drunk from the night before.

I live near a big old Catholic cemetary on the Northwest side. There are Cubs mementos all over the place. Grounds were packed over the weekend.
   22. Scott Lange Posted: November 08, 2016 at 06:48 PM (#5348795)
Someone, somewhere needs to write a big primer on all Cubs WS merch, so I can make some choices. Like, for instance, what's in that big eight-DVD set? I always figured I'd buy it when my turn came, but I've never had occasion to really look at one before. Although, what does it matter, I'm obviously buying it regardless.

I bought a copy of the Trib, and a large wall poster of the Trib front page (which will be framed and hung in my office at work).

Shirts and a hat as well, and I toyed with some other stuff but couldn't pull the trigger. I have enough knick-knacks gathering dust on my shelves as it is.
   24. Man o' Schwar Posted: November 08, 2016 at 06:49 PM (#5348798)
I'll be interested to see what the giveaways at Wrigley are next year. I bet they'll have some nice WS-related bobbleheads and whatnot.
   25. Greg Pope Posted: November 08, 2016 at 09:25 PM (#5349014)
I bought a bunch of shirts for the family. Got one for me, but I don't really wear that kind of thing. I got a sign to hang up in my office.

The Tribune was sold out quickly everywhere on Thursday, but they did another printing on Friday and I was able to snag about 10 copies. Gave away 5 of them and plan on framing the front page of one of them. Also, grabbed a Sports Illustrated to frame.

Thank God the Cubs won the last World Series before Trump opens the nuclear suitcase, when Wrigley Field, this site, and most of us will be no more.

Because they've got the word "Champions" on them. No need to justify it further.

My daughter's boyfriend bought me a shirt and a hat. I am not really a "merch" guy, but I do wear T-shirts, and I do own a couple of hats. He also bought a Trib.

I'm pretty sure she knew the deal coming into the relationship.

I spent 200 on a tshirt hoodie and jersey, I'm sure there is more to come.

I am also not a merch guy at all, but green lighted a couple of championship items as a birthday gift (I am not easy to buy gifts for).

I also have an idea for a t-shirt design, that I am working on. I won't describe it here but if it works I will make it available.
   31. Spahn Insane Posted: November 09, 2016 at 08:09 PM (#5350320)
I ordered a royal blue hoodie and a matching t-shirt, and splurged for the Bryant-autographed World Series baseball.

I also made a point of forwarding my postseason tickets to myself, so I could print them and go to the games while leaving my original strips of "real" tickets intact. I plan to frame those, perhaps with some news clippings or some such.
   32. Spahn Insane Posted: November 09, 2016 at 08:13 PM (#5350321)
Ah crap...need to grab an SI if they're around.

I'll be interested to see what the giveaways at Wrigley are next year.

Cuz lord knows they'll need help selling tickets. :-)

I have a t-shirt of some variety coming as the result of a bet. I won a second but, for non-sports reasons, I asked that person to donate the money to charity.

splurged for the Bryant-autographed World Series baseball.

That's why the Cs kept throwing 3rd out Ks to first base.

Hammel takes out full page ad in the Trib to thank the organization/Cubs fans.

There's value in being nice your free agents and players!

When Canada won it's first Olympic Men's Hockey Gold Medal in 50 years (2002), there was a deal offered by a company that would take any of the existing Canadian newspapers and create a mounted poster of it. Now, it wasn't the actual newspaper itself that was mounted, but a digital image printed onto the poster. We have one in my house from the National Post (where my sister worked).
