Just Enjoy It

WIth the end of the season fast approaching, there’s going to be plenty of stressful moments and opportunities for second guessing.  Whether the Cubs keep winning in October or not, I’ve found now is really a good time to just sit back and enjoy what we’ve seen over the last few years.  Obviously the title would be the ultimate, but I am at the point where I wouldn’t want to change places with any other fandom.

Sometimes it’s just fun to step back and consider the numbers.  It’s only September 6th - school just started (today is the first today of school in Chicago), and the Cubs magic number is 10.  They have a 16.5 game lead over the Cardinals, 21 over the Pirates, and 9 over the Nats for home field.  The Cubs are 31 games over .500 at home.

There’s too many things that I’ve enjoyed the last year or so that I’d surely miss something if I tried to list them all.  So a few things that have really stood out to me this year have been, in somewhat of an order of enjoyment:

1. Baez’s all-around play.  His defense, the quick tags, his baserunning, the fact that he’s cut down on strikeouts, and even those ridiculous swing and misses where you know he’s trying to hit the ball 500 hundred feet.
2. Russell’s development.  He still makes flashy plays, but his demeanor on the field and the box is always calm, and his play reflects that.
3. Bryant’s development and versatility.  I still marvel at his baserunning.
4. Hendricks.  Just everything about him.
5. Watching Arrieta hit.
6. The fact that Rizzo is the veteran of this group, and seeing how much he enjoys playing with everyone.
7. I’ve even been suckered into the Grandpa Rossy stuff and his retirement go round.

What other things about this regular season are you going to remember fondly?

Hendricks 4th Cubs pitcher to win 14. Ed Hartig: Last time Cubs had 4 pitchers with 14 wins was '36 with Lee, French, Warneke & Carleton

In and of itself, this is dumb and pointless. But there's been so many of these kind of things this year, it's become fun.

Except for that horrible 20 game stretch, thinking the Cubs had a chance in every game and that if trailing they could comeback and win the game.

But really, the thing I'll most remember about this year is the sense of fun and excitement that existed throughout the whole year. They weren't the cardiac Cubs or the hateful Cubs or the stupid Cubs and they managed to keep the fun and excitement up and running since the offseason.

I was talking to someone along these lines the other day, about the need to enjoy every game of this season, and it occurred to me that one way or the other, we'll never get a season like this again. If they win the WS this year, next year will be fun too, but in a different way. We'll have the pressure of "dynasty" expectations and we'll all be just a tad jaded (probably some more than others).

But if they lose in the playoffs then it'll be almost impossible to enjoy the regular season next year to anywhere near the same extent of this year. The better they do, the darker the choke specter will be, and if they scuffle along, that'll be ugly too.

Even if this group flames out altogether and a new group of kids comes along in 10 years, it won't be the same, the memory of this group will hang over those teams.

Last year was the fun taste of things to come. But this year is really the one when the promise is fulfilled. These are hopeful and innocent times, and they're a product of circumstances that'll never come together this way again in our lifetimes. I'm not even saying that it can't be more fun down the road - each Blackhawks Cup win has been better than the one before, IMO - just that this feeling, right now, will be gone soon and we'll miss it, at least a little. There's heartbreak in store one way or the other; they'll lose and we'll be devastated, or they'll win and even in our joy a piece of all of us will still be sad it's over.

So enjoy it.

9. Can I hear an Amen for Willson Contreras?

10. Soler's summer offense (OPS > 1.000 since June 1, albeit missing a lot of June and all of July)

Andere - yes, and I feel dumb for not including him. It's hard to say who's my favorite player, because damn if I don't like 95% of the team (I'm looking side-eyed at you LaStella, and I'm still not totally on board with you, Lackey). But watching him play is so fun, even a standard pickoff throw to first is exciting. He appeals damn near every checked swing, and I know as he continues to develop and play well, other teams and their fans are going to HATE him. I love it.

Our own little AJ Pierogi?

AJ is a dick, and always has been a dick. Willson is just super competitive and doesn't have an off switch. I think there's a difference, but yeah, people will compare the two, although I think that would be wrong.

Watching Jason Hammel not implode in the second half. . .er
