2004 Results: Molitor, Eckersley and Bresnahan are All Waved into the Hall of Merit!

In his first year of eligibility, multipositional star Paul Molitor claimed the first induction spot into the Hall of Merit with a terrific 94% of all possible points.

Also in his first year on the ballot, ace starting and relief hurler Dennis Eckerlsey earned a strong 77% of all possible points to become the second inductee in 2004.

Last but not least, catching great Roger Bresnahan finally made into the HoM with his 84th try. He gained admission with a weak 29% of all possible points.

Rounding out the top-ten were: Pete Browning (looks like 2005 will do the trick for him!), Kirby Puckett, Bob Johnson, Andre Dawson, Alejandro Oms  (first time in the top-ten!), Cannonball Dick Redding and Bucky Walters.

Thanks to OCF and Ron for helping me out with the tally!

Congratulations to Paul, Dennis and Roger!

The Duke of Tralee finally gets in after all of these years on my ballot. Yahoo!

Not that I'm complaing, but Oms made some surge there.

Through the very odd coincidence of both teams getting a catcher this year, here's the latest version of my HoM-not-PHoM and PHoM-not-HoM lineups.

HoM-not-PHoM

1. Carey CF
2. Sisler 1B
3. Kiner DH
4. Thompson RF
5. Jennings SS
6. Jones LF
7. Bresnahan C
8. Ashburn 3B
9. Fox 2B

SP Foster
RP Fingers

PHoM-not-HoM
1. Leach CF
2. Clarkson 3B
3. Johnson LF
4. Cravath DH
5. Smith RF
6. Cash 1B
7. Howard C
8. Monroe 2B
9. Rizzuto SS

SP Redding
RP/Bench Van Haltren

I'd give me the edge on defense and probably batting average - they have more power in the heart of the order, and a big advantage in the bullpen.

OK... I'll admit that I don't get the "Waived" reference in the title. Is there a pun there? Just curious. :)

Regarding the current backlog named on at least 5 ballots (5 votes):

43 of those 49 players score 10-15 points per vote.

More than 15 points - McGraw, Redding, Browning, Bridges.
With six #4 and #5 votes Bridges seems poised to move up. The other three have 5 or 6 "elect me" votes, although Redding with four #4 also seems poised to move up. Bridges and Redding may gain a little weight as "top pitcher" too.

Fewer than 10 points - Newcombe, Pesky

Nothing that elaborate, David. Just a typo. :-)

Good for Jake to get some company in the HOM. He must have felt bewildered and lonely when he arrived in '98 and found it full of guys in polyester lounge suits with funny haircuts playing disco music -- all his buddies were far far away, at the other end of the HOM complex. However Jones he presumably knew of though didn't play against and Bresnahan he must have played against. Only Browning however is an ex-teammate (1891 Pirates.) Still, Jake, Charley and Roger can get that old honky-tonk sound going!

>Pete Browning (looks like 2005 will do the trick for him!)

I'd put money on it...NOT.

I do want to urge all the anti-Browning voters to take a good long look at Kirby Puckett this year! ;-)
   14. karlmagnus Posted: September 11, 2007 at 11:53 AM (#2519551)
There shouldn't be any anti-Browning voters, just pro-Puckett (though I can't think why.) Oms however has a case.
   15. sunnyday2 Posted: September 11, 2007 at 12:32 PM (#2519569)
There aren't any anti-Browning voters?

I do think some detailed discussion of the OFers is in order--I mean, that's basically what there are, OF candidates. If Oms is going to continue his meteoric rise and leapfrog Browning, Puckett, Dawson and Johnson, I hope it is after some more analysis over these next 2 weeks.

And BTW Duffy, Cravath, R. Smith and poor old Hugh Duffy aren't far behind. Looks a lot like the old CF glut.

Who is the first Duffy, Marc? Duffy Dyer? Duffy Lewis? Frank Duffy? Duffy's Tavern?

Wow. I get Cobb to come to my side on Matlock, plunging him into the median, but my non-support for Eck nonetheless remands me to a Magnusian consensus score. As the old timers up here say...Hard tellin' not knowin'.

Oh...that other guy is Tony "Duffy" Perez.

And per Doc...I just can't seem to get my consensus score down for nuthin.' In my heart, I know I am a low-consensus guy.

Bresnahan finishes 12th, longtime running mate Leach won't quite catch him thru 2007... Walters three pts shy of being our 26th and final 10,000-pt man.... Johnson and Oms continue rapid climbs... Williamson won't have quite enough oomph to take a top 50 slot from Sheckard thru 2007.... Not his real goal, but ReSmith does climb from just off the "top 50 active" list to 44th with a big year. Staub erases MGriffin from that list.

Moore represents one extreme for he dropped off every ballot. (Similarly, Oms debuted with no support.)
Waddell and Sewell represent another extreme, the comeback.

Who has the best rate (pts/election) of the unelected players?

Would probably have to be Puckett or Dawson, don't you think? A recent guy who has been top 10-15 right from day 1 and never had a down period. Maybe Perez. They'd be the only ones who fit that description, but is that the right description?

I think I'd rather see who has the most:

Sum of (Points/Ballots) for every year, divided by number of elections eligible for. That would at least put everyone on an equal plane. Would probably hurt the modern candidates actually, since the backlogs are a lot deeper.

Not sure if there's a good way to 'era' adjust for this . . .

Here what I would like to see: Which currently eligible player is in the most PHOMs? My guess is Dick Redding

I would say Browning - he's got to be in the PHoM for everyone that votes for him.

OK... I finally got around to updating the master lists at the yahoo groups.

The voting from the past five elections is added with updated InductedYear columns for all previous years. I also fixed a problem with three candidates who were listed as having two FirstBallotYears (Foutz,Burns,WFoster) due to previous name conflicts. The files are named:

2004HOM_CandidateVotesPerYear.txt
2004HOM_SumCandidateVotes.txt

and are found here:

http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/HallofMerit/files/

Please let me know if there are any errors or other problems.

Also, feel free to ask if there are any additional tags (columns) that would be helpful.

One other thing, there seems to be an issue with MSAccess and some of the accented letters in the file. I get the accents from the results table (Copy/Paste).

To workaround this, a global search-and-replace on the letter pairs (á/a, é/e, ó/o, etc) can be done while the files are still simple text.

I wouldn't mind doing this on my end, but I don't know if anyone needs those accents now for backward compatibility issues.
