Hall of Merit — A Look at Baseball's All-Time Best Thursday, December 17, 2015Mock Hall of Fame Ballot 2016IMPORTANT: Please read: This election should follow BBWAA rules, not Hall of Merit rules. However, we hope to see only players that each voter feels belong on their ballots. Leaving 1st-year candidates off your ballot is also frowned upon. IOW, we would like to see an absence of some of the silliness that permeates Hall of Fame voting by the writers. The election will end Wednesday on December 23, 2015 (1 PM EST). Results will be posted a short time later. Please don’t post any vote tallies on this thread. Here are some of the rules by the BBWAA that pertain to our electorate: 3. Eligible Candidates — Candidates to be eligible must meet the following requirements: A. A baseball player must have been active as a player in the Major Leagues at some time during a period beginning twenty (20) years before and ending five (5) years prior to election. 4. Method of Election A. BBWAA Screening Committee — A Screening Committee consisting of baseball writers will be appointed by the BBWAA. This Screening Committee shall consist of six members, with two members to be elected at each Annual Meeting for a three-year term. The duty of the Screening Committee shall be to prepare a ballot listing in alphabetical order eligible candidates who (1) received a vote on a minimum of five percent (5%) of the ballots cast in the preceding election or (2) are eligible for the first time and are nominated by any two of the six members of the BBWAA Screening Committee. 5. Voting — Voting shall be based upon the player’s record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played. Voting an alphabetical ballot will make it easier to tally votes Here are the players, in alphabetical order: Garret Anderson |

This just breeds its own brand of silliness, wherein a bunch of people engage in "strategic" voting, as though their leaving Greg Maddux off the ballot in service of keeping Jeff Kent above five percent has any impact on whether Kent appears on the following year's ballot.

And Rusty I get that you can see 10 better than Mike Piazza (or that not voting for Piazza could be a strategic choice for omission) but I'm see at least 11 guys I want to vote for and a number of others who are to my mind fully qualified by the HOF's existing standards.

Calisse-moi, c'est dur. Yes, it's a Mock Hall of Fame ballot (per the title), not a list of the ten best players. With 17 dudes I wanted to vote for, something had to give. If you don't like it, the giftshop sells maps to short piers.

Yes, the Edmonds but not Walker vote is strange, but I think Edmonds is more likely to fall off the ballot, so it's a bit of strategy. I think they're really, really close anyway.

Griffey

9 above (other than McGriff) were obvious choices for me. McGriff, McGwire, Martinez, Sheffield, Walker were all real close.

Martinez
McGwire
Sosa
Bagwell
Edmonds
Garciaparra
Griffey
McGriff
Piazza
Raines

If there were only a handful of qualified candidates, I'd throw Jason Kendall a "Rookie, you were good" vote.

Went back and forth between either Martinez or Walker for the 10th slot. There are others I might add if I had more room, but the top 11 were mostly no doubters for me.
Barry Bonds
Roger Clemens
Ken Griffey Jr.
Edgar Martinez
Mike Piazza
Tim Raines
Curt Schilling
Alan Trammell
Larry Walker
No room for Edmonds, McGwire, Mussina, or Sosa.
Hoffman, Kent, and Sheffield are borderlines.
Edgar Martinez
Curt Schilling
Mike Mussina
Mike Piazza
Alan Trammell
I'd deal with the steroid guys when all the clean players are in the Hall. of course, Piazza was probably one of them, but consistency is the hobgoblin....
What's the evidence against Bagwell?
Edit: Not trying to start a steroid argument. Honestly just wondering what makes Piazza different than Bagwell.

2. Clemens
3. Griffey
4. Piazza
5. Schilling
6. Bagwell
7. Mussina
8. McGwire
9. Trammell
10. Raines
Deserved a vote but not enough spots 11. Walker 12. Sosa
Deserve more discussion but not over my line yet 13. Edgar 14. Sheffield 15. McGriff 16. Edmonds 17. Kent 18. Hoffman 19. Wagner 20. Lee Smith.
Yes this is a really deep pool of quality players, that accentuates the silly decision by the HOF to not expand the ballots.

Given enough room, would have liked to include Schilling, McGwire, Sheffield, Sosa, Edmonds, McGriff, Kent, Hoffman, Wagner, Smith.

Edgar Martinez
Mike Mussina
Mike Piazza
Tim Raines Sr
Curt Schilling
If ballots weren't limited, I'd also include Mark McGwire, Gary Sheffield, Sammy Sosa, Alan Trammell, and Larry Walker
If a voter has 10 or fewer players he believes should be elected, that's his ballot.
If he has more than 10 - that's where it gets interesting.
Jeff Bagwell
Jim Edmonds
Ken Griffey Jr.

Edgar Martinez 56.0
Mike Mussina 63.8

Jeff Kent 45.4
Fred McGriff 44.1

Mike Hampton 27.3
Lee Smith 25.4

I would vote yes for 16 of these guys.
Jeff Bagwell
Barry Bonds
Roger Clemens
Ken Griffey Jr.
Mike Mussina
Mike Piazza
Tim Raines
Curt Schilling
Gary Sheffield
Alan Trammell
I guess I'll drop these guys. If it was a real ballot with BBWAA consequences, I'd probably vote for Edmonds and Kendall with the idea that they need 5% to stay, and I'd drop Bonds and Clemens because they aren't going in anyway, but also won't drop off. So if that's what you are going for here, feel free to make that change.
