Mock Hall of Fame Ballot 2016

IMPORTANT: Please read:

This election should follow BBWAA rules, not Hall of Merit rules. However, we hope to see only players that each voter feels belong on their ballots. Leaving 1st-year candidates off your ballot is also frowned upon. IOW, we would like to see an absence of some of the silliness that permeates Hall of Fame voting by the writers.

The election will end Wednesday on December 23, 2015 (1 PM EST). Results will be posted a short time later.

Please don’t post any vote tallies on this thread.

Here are some of the rules by the BBWAA that pertain to our electorate:

3. Eligible Candidates — Candidates to be eligible must meet the following requirements:

A. A baseball player must have been active as a player in the Major Leagues at some time during a period beginning twenty (20) years before and ending five (5) years prior to election.
B. Player must have played in each of ten (10) Major League championship seasons, some part of which must have been within the period described in 3 (A).
C. Player shall have ceased to be an active player in the Major Leagues at least five (5) calendar years preceding the election but may be otherwise connected with baseball.
D. In case of the death of an active player or a player who has been retired for less than five (5) full years, a candidate who is otherwise eligible shall be eligible in the next regular election held at least six (6) months after the date of death or after the end of the five (5) year period, whichever occurs first.
E. Any player on Baseball’s ineligible list shall not be an eligible candidate.

4. Method of Election

A. BBWAA Screening Committee — A Screening Committee consisting of baseball writers will be appointed by the BBWAA. This Screening Committee shall consist of six members, with two members to be elected at each Annual Meeting for a three-year term. The duty of the Screening Committee shall be to prepare a ballot listing in alphabetical order eligible candidates who (1) received a vote on a minimum of five percent (5%) of the ballots cast in the preceding election or (2) are eligible for the first time and are nominated by any two of the six members of the BBWAA Screening Committee.
B. Electors may vote for as few as zero (0) and as many as ten (10) eligible candidates deemed worthy of election. Write-in votes are not permitted.
C. Any candidate receiving votes on seventy-five percent (75%) of the ballots cast shall be elected to membership in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

5. Voting — Voting shall be based upon the player’s record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played.

Voting an alphabetical ballot will make it easier to tally votes

This just breeds its own brand of silliness, wherein a bunch of people engage in "strategic" voting, as though their leaving Greg Maddux off the ballot in service of keeping Jeff Kent above five percent has any impact on whether Kent appears on the following year's ballot.

And Rusty I get that you can see 10 better than Mike Piazza (or that not voting for Piazza could be a strategic choice for omission) but I'm see at least 11 guys I want to vote for and a number of others who are to my mind fully qualified by the HOF's existing standards.

Griffey
Mussina
Piazza
Raines
Schilling
Trammell
Walker

I'd also happily induct Edgar and McGwire, and would very likely vote for Sosa, Edmonds, and Sheffield. I'm still on the fence about Kent and McGriff.

There's a little variation there from all of us. Between Edgar, Walker, Schilling, Moose, McGwire and with a sprinkling of Edmonds most of the ballots contain the same 5/6 names and diverge from that point.

Calisse-moi, c'est dur. Yes, it's a Mock Hall of Fame ballot (per the title), not a list of the ten best players. With 17 dudes I wanted to vote for, something had to give. If you don't like it, the giftshop sells maps to short piers.

I have 16 fully qualified on my ballot, so I weigh how close they are to 5/75, how long they've been on the ballot, and personal whim to get:

Bagwell
Bonds
Clemens
Griffey
McGwire
Mussina
Piazza
Raines
Sosa
Trammell

Edmonds, Martinez, McGriff, Schilling, Sheffield, Walker are qualified but I lack slots.

Yes, the Edmonds but not Walker vote is strange, but I think Edmonds is more likely to fall off the ballot, so it's a bit of strategy. I think they're really, really close anyway.

9 above (other than McGriff) were obvious choices for me. McGriff, McGwire, Martinez, Sheffield, Walker were all real close.

(In some basic order or deservedness)

1. Bonds
2. Clemens
3. Griffey
4. Piazza
5. Schilling
6. Bagwell
7. Mussina
8. McGwire
9. Trammell
10. Raines

Deserved a vote but not enough spots 11. Walker 12. Sosa
Deserve more discussion but not over my line yet 13. Edgar 14. Sheffield 15. McGriff 16. Edmonds 17. Kent 18. Hoffman 19. Wagner 20. Lee Smith.

Yes this is a really deep pool of quality players, that accentuates the silly decision by the HOF to not expand the ballots.

This thing is getting ridiculous - elect some of these guys already BBWAA.

I would vote yes for 16 of these guys.

Jeff Bagwell
Barry Bonds
Roger Clemens
Ken Griffey Jr.
Mike Mussina
Mike Piazza
Tim Raines
Curt Schilling
Gary Sheffield
Alan Trammell

I guess I'll drop these guys. If it was a real ballot with BBWAA consequences, I'd probably vote for Edmonds and Kendall with the idea that they need 5% to stay, and I'd drop Bonds and Clemens because they aren't going in anyway, but also won't drop off. So if that's what you are going for here, feel free to make that change.

Larry Walker
Jim Edmonds
Jason Kendall
Edgar Martinez
Sammy Sosa
Mark McGwire

Bagwell
Bonds
Clemens
Griffey
Martinez
Mussina
Piazza

Sosa
Trammell

There are several other people I would like to vote for but not enough room and I am sure there is no logic to it either.

Loaded ballot, top 10:
Jeff Bagwell
Barry Bonds
Roger Clemens
Jim Edmonds
Ken Griffey Jr.
Mike Mussina
Mike Piazza
Tim Raines
Curt Schilling
Alan Trammell

Others worthy:
Edgar Martinez
Mark McGwire
Gary Sheffield
Sammy Sosa
Larry Walker

Close but not cigar:
Jason Kendall
Jeff Kent

Would also take McGriff, Garciaparra, and maybe Wagner ahead of BBWAA darling Trevor Hoffman.

Please delete my vote from post #80. I accidentally voted for Martinez when I meant Mussina, especially since I mentioned Martinez in my other votes. The following is my actual vote:

Bagwell
Bonds
Clemens
Griffey
Mussina
Piazza
Raines
Schilling
Trammell
Walker

Larry Walker is also a yes. Torn on McGwire and Sheffield. Sosa, Kent and Edmonds the only other faint possibilities--almost certainly nos, but haven't shut the book completely.

Weird, I can comment on here, but can't comment on the result thread.

edit: nevermind, I can now. before it would force me to log in, then take me to the front page, and when I click on the results page it would force me to log in again, but clicking from here works, so I'm guessing whatever issue was there, is gone now.
