Mock Hall of Fame Ballot 2017

IMPORTANT: Please read:

This election should follow BBWAA rules, not Hall of Merit rules. However, we hope to see only players that each voter feels belong on their ballots. Leaving 1st-year candidates off your ballot is also frowned upon. IOW, we would like to see an absence of some of the silliness that permeates Hall of Fame voting by the writers.

The election will end Thursday on December 22, 2016 (3 PM EST). Results will be posted a short time later.

Please don’t post any vote tallies on this thread.

Here are some of the rules by the BBWAA that pertain to our electorate:

3. Eligible Candidates — Candidates to be eligible must meet the following requirements:

A. A baseball player must have been active as a player in the Major Leagues at some time during a period beginning twenty (20) years before and ending five (5) years prior to election.
B. Player must have played in each of ten (10) Major League championship seasons, some part of which must have been within the period described in 3 (A).
C. Player shall have ceased to be an active player in the Major Leagues at least five (5) calendar years preceding the election but may be otherwise connected with baseball.
D. In case of the death of an active player or a player who has been retired for less than five (5) full years, a candidate who is otherwise eligible shall be eligible in the next regular election held at least six (6) months after the date of death or after the end of the five (5) year period, whichever occurs first.
E. Any player on Baseball’s ineligible list shall not be an eligible candidate.

4. Method of Election

A. BBWAA Screening Committee — A Screening Committee consisting of baseball writers will be appointed by the BBWAA. This Screening Committee shall consist of six members, with two members to be elected at each Annual Meeting for a three-year term. The duty of the Screening Committee shall be to prepare a ballot listing in alphabetical order eligible candidates who (1) received a vote on a minimum of five percent (5%) of the ballots cast in the preceding election or (2) are eligible for the first time and are nominated by any two of the six members of the BBWAA Screening Committee.
B. Electors may vote for as few as zero (0) and as many as ten (10) eligible candidates deemed worthy of election. Write-in votes are not permitted.
C. Any candidate receiving votes on seventy-five percent (75%) of the ballots cast shall be elected to membership in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

5. Voting — Voting shall be based upon the player’s record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played.

Voting an alphabetical ballot will make it easier to tally votes

Here are the players, in alphabetical order:

For the first time in a while, I don't feel terrible about the 10 person limit. I would definitely also vote for Sheffield and almost certainly for Vlad. And I would probably give a vote (in descending order) to Sosa, Kent, Posada, and maybe McGriff. But compared to some of the ridiculous decisions of past years, this one was actually pretty easy.

Would have made my ballot if not for space limits: Manny Ramirez, Gary Sheffield, Sammy Sosa, and maybe Kent, McGiff and Posada. The latter three all all left off because they rank well below he other 13; the former three are left off due to a combination of quality and non-quality (e.g. Raines last year on the ballot, Ramierez's positive tests after the rule changes, etc.) issues.

Note: Mike Mussina, in my RPA ratings, is the 11th best MLB pitcher since 1900. He should have been a first ballot HOF'er!! Almost unique in MLB history, every single year of his career, he was a premier pitcher! Every single year, in other words, Mussina was a plus run value to his team. When I totaled up his run value for his entire career, only 10 MLB pitchers had a higher run value, with Roger Clemens as Numero Uno.

I'd probably vote for about 5 more if I had an unlimited ballot. That's an improvement, last few years I could have easily justified 20. I'm hoping we get a big class this year, combined with not super-strong first time classes and players dropping off the ballot, and in the next few years I might not even use all of my 10 imaginary spots.

My personal Hall of Fame would include 15 players on this ballot and if you catch me at the right moment, I'd be open to convincing that Trevor Hoffman also belongs. My first pass, I used steroids as a tiebreaker, but that doesn't quite work - I have 9 "clean" players (including Bagwell) and 6 "dirty" players and trying to weigh level of dirty (Sosa? Clemens? Pudge?) vs. value became too much of a mess. So, I just went with a straight value ranking, with two exceptions. First, I gave a very slight bump to Tim Raines to make sure he made the ballot since it's his last one, I like him, and I find him Hall-worthy. Second, I left Manny Ramirez off the ballot in the spirit of the Hall of Merit's one-year boycott rule - he's the only guy on the ballot who explicitly failed a drug test and I didn't like his leaving the 2011 Rays out to dry by retiring rather than just taking his suspension (and I needed to drop somebody to push Raines on-ballot). I actually voted for him (#1 even) in the Hall of Merit, but 9 of the 10 guys on my ballot here are already in the Hall of Merit, so there isn't nearly the ballot-space limitation issue.

My ballot (in alphabetical order, as requested):

Jeff Bagwell
Barry Bonds
Roger Clemens
Jeff Kent
Edgar Martinez
Mike Mussina
Tim Raines
Curt Schilling
Gary Sheffield
Larry Walker

I would also vote for Vladimir Guerrero, Jorge Posada, Manny Ramirez, Ivan Rodriguez, and Sammy Sosa if not for the 10-man ballot limit.

On the one hand, it does feel like the backlog has eased considerably. But, on the other hand, I count 18 ballots so far as I type this, and every single one of them has listed 10 names.

The last two cuts were both excruciating. I imagine my voting criteria are pretty idiosyncratic, but then again so are the BWAA's, and I feel pretty good about my ballot. Would also vote for Martinez, Sheffield, I guess Schilling, probably Hoffman. I've never looked all that closely at Kent because he's never been a top-10 guy in any year I've paid attention.

Martinez

Sosa, Vlad, Kent, Sheffield, and McGriff would also make my ballot with unlimited room. I'd probably add both Posada and yes - Hoffman (Fame not Merit) and space permitting, might even be persuaded to include Smith. If I were to vote 'strategically, I think that I'd swap Sosa and Rodriguez mainly because I'm pretty sure I-Rod will make it easily and Sosa needs the votes. I might also consider swapping one of Vlad or Kent for Bagwell if only because Bags is on the cusp of election, too.

Left off due to lack of room: Guerrero, Posada, and Ramirez.

I could have added at least 5 more players eligible (or should be eligible). BBWAA, you are ridiculous.

I don't think I would vote for more than these ten, so we are possibly at the point where the ballot can be deemed 'cleared'
Very much a minority opinion around here. Only a smaller-than-Cooperstown-Hall voter would exclude Walker, Mussina and Schilling.
