Ty Cobb is the AL position player MMP for the 7th time. The Georgia Peach also won in 1907, '09, '10, '11, '15 and '17. This was a tricky technical decision as Cobb finished 3rd this year behind a pitcher (Johnson) and a pitcher/position player hybrid (Ruth). However, based solely on contributions as a position player, Cobb takes this award rather than Ruth.
Hippo Vaughn of the Chicago Cubs is the NL MMP. This is the 6th straight season that a pitcher has been tops in the National League with Babe Adams, Bill James and Pete Alexander (3x) preceding Vaughn. That beats the streak in the AL from 1971-'75.
Heinie Groh is the top position player in the NL. Groh is the earliest Red to win the award, though Johnny Bench ('70, '72) and Joe Morgan ('73, '75, '76) have also won for Cincinnati.
Finally, Joe Williams is the Negro League MMP for the 5th time, with earlier victories coming in 1912, '14, '16 and '17. Williams held off a multi-pronged challenge this year as Torriente, Charleston, Lloyd, Redding and Whitworth all received votes.
