1. DL from MN Posted: July 07, 2020 at 11:45 AM (#5961453)1929 Prelim
1) Rogers Hornsby - this one is easy
2) Mel Ott
3) Al Simmons
4) Jimmie Foxx
5) Willie Wells - best NGL player
6) Lefty O'Doul
7) Babe Ruth
8) Tony Lazzeri
9) Lou Gehrig
10) Chet Brewer - not an impressive year for pitchers
Just off ballot: Red Lucas, Charlie Gehringer, Willis Hudlin, Firpo Marberry, Lefty Grove, Mickey Cochrane, Newt Allen, Paul Waner, Turkey Stearnes, Travis Jackson, William Bell, John Beckwith, Willie Foster
Agreed. I was one of Redding's biggest advocates for the Hall of Merit. However, at this point in his career, Redding was primarily a manager. He'd put himself into a game every once in a while as needed.* And, he could still be effective- as evidenced by his complete game shutout in his only recorded game this season. But any MLE that extrapolates his results to a full season is making an unwarranted and erroneous assumption.
*John McGraw did something similar when he became manager of the Giants, playing 5, 3, 4 and 1 game in his last four "seasons."
2. Willie Wells - Best NgL player, and I even flirted with having him ahead of Hornsby. Not sure exactly how strong the NNL was - the ANL looks a bit better - so he slides down here.
3. Charlie "Chino" Smith - Absolutely tore up the ANL. Terrific hitting season. I don't know much about his defence, and since he's in right I'm guessing he's no Speaker, but still. .837 slugging
4. Mel Ott
5. Jimmie Foxx - Couple of big seasons for the sluggers
6. Al Simmons - Gets credit for what appears to have been an outstanding year defensively in left, which pushes him pretty close to the bigger bats in front of him.
7. Rap Dixon - Another great hitting season from the ANL.
8. Hack Wilson - Position adjustment still leaves him short of the corner outfielder glut.
9. Lefty Grove - Best pitcher, though as DL says, it was not an impressive year for pitchers.
10. Babe Ruth - Barely makes the ballot. End of an era.
Close to ballot: Chet Brewer (best NgL pitcher), Mickey Cochrane, Lefty O'Doul, Lou Gehrig, Martin Dihigo
Not close to ballot: Pat Malone (best NL pitcher).
