Most Meritorious Player: 1929 Discussion

The Philadelphia Athletics beat the Cubs 4 games to 1 in the World Series.

The Kansas City Monarchs were the best team in the Negro National League winning both halves of the schedule. The Baltimore Black Sox did the same in the one season of the American Negro League.

I am not at all comfortable with that Dick Redding MLE for his age 39 season. He only has one game documented on Seamheads.

1929 Prelim

1) Rogers Hornsby - this one is easy
2) Mel Ott
3) Al Simmons
4) Jimmie Foxx
5) Willie Wells - best NGL player
6) Lefty O'Doul
7) Babe Ruth
8) Tony Lazzeri
9) Lou Gehrig
10) Chet Brewer - not an impressive year for pitchers

I'm inclined to give Dihigo credit for both his batting and his pitching lines. He was truly a standout utility player. That will probably bump Gehrig or Brewer off my ballot.

Just off ballot: Red Lucas, Charlie Gehringer, Willis Hudlin, Firpo Marberry, Lefty Grove, Mickey Cochrane, Newt Allen, Paul Waner, Turkey Stearnes, Travis Jackson, William Bell, John Beckwith, Willie Foster

Agreed. I was one of Redding's biggest advocates for the Hall of Merit. However, at this point in his career, Redding was primarily a manager. He'd put himself into a game every once in a while as needed.* And, he could still be effective- as evidenced by his complete game shutout in his only recorded game this season. But any MLE that extrapolates his results to a full season is making an unwarranted and erroneous assumption.

*John McGraw did something similar when he became manager of the Giants, playing 5, 3, 4 and 1 game in his last four "seasons."

One thing to note in my reading is the American Negro League took the step of compiling statistics and having them published in the Pittsburgh Courier (?) after the completion of the season. This is one of the best documented NGL seasons.

1. Rogers Hornsby - Great season. B-R has him as deserving a Gold Glove this season (had they existed), which I'm a little dubious of, but even decent defending makes this a top-notch season.
2. Willie Wells - Best NgL player, and I even flirted with having him ahead of Hornsby. Not sure exactly how strong the NNL was - the ANL looks a bit better - so he slides down here.
3. Charlie "Chino" Smith - Absolutely tore up the ANL. Terrific hitting season. I don't know much about his defence, and since he's in right I'm guessing he's no Speaker, but still. .837 slugging
4. Mel Ott
5. Jimmie Foxx - Couple of big seasons for the sluggers
6. Al Simmons - Gets credit for what appears to have been an outstanding year defensively in left, which pushes him pretty close to the bigger bats in front of him.
7. Rap Dixon - Another great hitting season from the ANL.
8. Hack Wilson - Position adjustment still leaves him short of the corner outfielder glut.
9. Lefty Grove - Best pitcher, though as DL says, it was not an impressive year for pitchers.
10. Babe Ruth - Barely makes the ballot. End of an era.

Close to ballot: Chet Brewer (best NgL pitcher), Mickey Cochrane, Lefty O'Doul, Lou Gehrig, Martin Dihigo

Not close to ballot: Pat Malone (best NL pitcher).
