I love this season from Bonds, his first MVP year.

Rickey Henderson is the third Oakland A to win the MMP and all three have been outfielders (Reggie Jackson in '69 and Jose Canseco in '88). This is also the second time in a row that Rickey has been the AL's top position player.

Roger Clemens is the pitching MMP for an impressive third time (he previously won '86 and '87). The Rocket is launching himself into pretty select company as only Christy Mathewson has more with 4. Ed Walsh, Robin Roberts, Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson also have 3.

Barry Bonds has interrupted San Francisco's streak of NL MMPs (though they'll have their revenge in the future). Bonds is the first Pirate to win the NL MMP since Dave Parker in 1978 and first left fielder since Sherry Magee in 1910.

Frank Viola is the 1990 NL Pitching MMP. The final vote looks close with Viola and Ed Whitson each receiving three votes. However, Viola and Whitson were twice named on the same ballot and Viola was ahead each time. Including off-ballot mentions, Viola was ahead of Whitson for 6 of 7 voters.

Finally, that lone vote put Eckersley in the company of relievers to be named on an MMP ballot and the first since Mark Eichhorn had 7 votes for 10th place in 1986.
