It's not unexpected but Barry Bonds is entering some elite territory. This is Bonds' second MMP in a row, joining Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb, Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Joe Morgan, Cal Ripken Jr. and Mike Trout as consecutive MMPs. However, only Mickey Mantle and Barry Bonds have won back-to-back MMPs unanimously. Mantle did it in '56 and '57. This is also Bonds' fourth straight NL MMP and NL position player MMP. Only Mickey Mantle (5) and Honus Wagner (6) have more consecutive league awards (though Mike Trout also has an active streak of 4).

The pitching MMP has seen some close finishes over the years, including a couple of run-offs and at least one tie (Niekro and Perry in 1974). However, this has to rank as one of the closest. Kevin Appier narrowly edged Jose Rijo by one point for the overall award. The difference maker turned out to be caiman, who was the only voter to leave Rijo off of his ballot.

Appier is the second Royal to win the award, following Bret Saberhagen in 1989. As a consolation prize, Rijo at least wins the NL pitching MMP, the first Red to do so since Bob Purkey in 1962.

Finally, John Olerud became the first Blue Jay to win the AL MMP (take that, George Bell!). Olerud is the third first baseman and the second in a row to win the award, joining Rod Carew ('77) and Frank Thomas ('92). Of course, some guy named Lou Gehrig will probably add to that total when we get to the '20s and '30s.

This is trivial, but confusing. How did four guys get 2 points each without being on any ballots at all? Typo of some sort? - Brock

Good catch, I wasn't counting 14th place votes as making a ballot, copy paste error from 13 member ballots.

What? You're not perfect? Where shall we turn to now in our hour of need? - Brock

Is there a storehouse thread where all the MMP results can be seen together? Thanks.

The important links has a link to all the MMP threads but you have to clickthrough to see all the results. If someone wants to make a public google doc I can send them the results spreadsheet.

DL, if you create a thread, I can post the charts that I occasionally submit to the results thread. That would give us a central place to track MMP, plus the league specific, and pitcher and position player derivations. I don't have moderator authority or I'd go ahead and do it myself.

Frank Thomas won the BBWA award that year and Molitor finished second.

What do you want the thread called? MMP Analysis?
   13. Qufini Posted: September 21, 2016 at 12:46 PM (#5304033)
I don't know. MMP Compilation Thread or MMP Awards Warehouse would work for me. I suppose MMP Awards Cabinet would work too but the O's fan in me prefers to call it a Warehouse.

MMP Trophy Case works for me

Good one. Wish I had thought of it.

It made sense. The HoM has a plaque room, MMP should have a trophy case.
