That's not the half of it. Maddux is the first pitcher to win a second MMP award at all, let alone doing it back-to-back. This is also his third pitching MMP (he was top pitcher in 1992 when he finished third overall). That ties him with Ed Walsh, Robin Roberts, Sandy Koufax and Bob Gibson for third (Mathewson and Clemens are currently tied for first with 4 a piece).

Meanwhile, Barry Bonds is the top position player in the NL for the fifth time. He held off a strong challenge by catcher Mike Piazza to retake his crown from Jeff Bagwell. However, Bonds still has a ways to go to catch his god-father Willie Mays who has 9 NL position player crowns.

My best player without a vote: Kenny Rogers

Between my two all-star teams, I named 10 starting pitchers, 5 in each league. Rogers wasn't one of them.

My best position player was Matt Williams. Rogers isn't far off from Mussina.

We pretty clearly corrected the "Mo Vaughn" mistake this year. Jose Mesa and Dante Bichette did not get votes.

My best position player was Matt Williams.

I did have Williams on my NL all-star team, albeit as a reserve, with Caminiti as the starting 3B. I'm not in position to say who my best player without a vote was, but if I'm ranking Caminiti ahead of Williams and Caminiti didn't get a vote either, then ...
