As a consolation, Clemens passed Mathewson for most ballots with a vote by a pitcher

Wow! It's amazing that Piazza beat out Clemens despite trailing 7-2 in first place votes.

This is the fifth time that Clemens has won the pitching MMP ('86, '87, '90, '91) though he has yet to win the full award having finished 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 3rd and now 2nd again overall. This is, however, the first time that Clemens has also won the AL MMP.

Ken Griffey Jr makes it three straight years that the AL position player MMP goes to Seattle, after Edgar Martinez ('95) and Alex Rodriguez ('96).

Finally, Pedro Martinez is the NL pitching MMP. He's the second Expo to win the award, joining Steve Rogers ('82).

Clemens throws shards of a broken bat in frustration.

We have had an election decided by one point before (1969) but Reggie had 4 first place votes which was as many as anyone else (McCovey 4, Petrocelli 2, Gibson 2).
