Pedro Martinez is the third Red Sox player to win MMP honors, joining Carl Yastrzemski ('67 & '70) and Fred Lynn ('79)- though I have a feeling some guy named Ted Williams will join that list once we cover his peak years. Martinez is also the first AL player to win MMP honors since Cal Ripken Jr. took home the big prize in 1991, breaking a string of 7 straight for the Senior Circuit.

Derek Jeter missed out on the overall award but he's still the AL Position Player MMP. Jeter is the first Yankee to win this award since Bobby Murcer in 1971. Phil Rizzuto ('50), Mickey Mantle ('55-'59, '61-'62), Roger Maris ('60) and Elston Howard ('63) have also won for New York.

In the closest battle of the year, Randy Johnson edged out Jeff Bagwell for NL MMP honors, 115 to 112 points. Johnson is the first played honored from the expansion Diamondbacks.

As a consolation prize, Jeff Bagwell is this year's NL Position Player MMP. This is the second time Bagwell has garnered this award and the second time he lost out on the full NL award to a pitcher, following another narrow loss to Greg Maddux in 1994.
