Matt Hobgood, the Orioles' first-round pick in Tuesday's amateur draft, expects to take a physical exam in Baltimore in two weeks, and barring any unforeseen developments, will sign a contract on June 27.

Baseball America lists Angels first round pick OF Randal Grichuk as having signed, but I haven't seen confirmation of that anywhere.
   12. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 19, 2009 at 07:31 PM (#3225195)
Dad is doing pretty well - he came through the surgery fine and will be moved to a rehab center in several days. Looking at about 10-12 days before he comes home. So we will be on the plane at 6 AM tomorrow.

Grichuk's not showing up on a roster anywhere yet. I can't find confirmation, either - nothing on the Angels' Web site or in the usual places. The AZL and Pioneer Leagues don't start until next week, so it's possible that he has signed but hasn't been ASsigned yet.

I'm not seeing anything on most of the eventual B/C league assignees, so that doesn't mean much wrt Grichuk one way or the other.

Great to hear Mike. Hope all is well.

I think its kinda odd that the short season league start so soon after the draft. Are a lot of teams left scrambling to fill rosters if they don't sign enough guys?

Not usually. Most teams sign 15-20 players very quickly after the draft, and fill out the rosters with guys coming up from the DSL/VSL and second-year guys who are still eligible for the lowest short-season levels.

From Angels season seat newletter:

On Saturday, June 20th, the Angels announced the club has agreed to terms on a minor league contract with outfielder Randal Grichuk of Lamar Consolidated High School in Lamar, TX their first pick (1st round, 24th overall) in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. Grichuk, 17, hit .613 (46/75) with 21 home runs and 46 RBI in 28 games in 2009. He walked 23 times and struck out just 11 times in 75 at-bats. As a junior, Grichuk was named to the 2008 4A All-State First team. In addition, he was selected to play for the 2007 USA Baseball Youth National Team.

Sounds like both are pretty much in the bag. The rumors I have heard is that there are a lot of guys like Myers and Gould who have signed, but have had their signings held up by the Commish's office (who has to approve the contracts) because they are over-slot. How can they delay a player's development like that?

Two sources said that Minor could have signed months earlier if not for interference from MLB. Minor and the Braves agreed in principle on the $2.42 million bonus before the draft—but before Atlanta received official word that the slots were reduced. The commissioner’s office pressured the Braves not to make the above-slot deal official so they wouldn’t hurt the Reds in their attempt to sign Arizona State righthander Mike Leake, the No. 8 pick, to a below-slot bonus.

MLB’s recommendation for the No. 8 pick is $2,043,000.

Dbacks signings update

As for Owings: This is Chris Owings, a high school shortstop out of South Carolina whom the Diamondbacks selected No. 41 overall in the June draft. Reportedly, he will receive a $950,000 signing bonus, which Jim Callis at Baseball America says is $134,600 over slot.

...

We hear there has been no movement on the negotiations with top pick Bobby Borchering, to the point where negotiations practically have not even begun. The last specific piece of info we heard was that the club had offered $1.5 million, but that was two weeks ago.

It sounds like Borchering’s side is waiting until more of the picks around him have come to terms, so this could be one that takes up until the deadline, which this year is Aug. 17.

Besides Borchering (who will sign eventually), the other two guys the Dbacks would like to lock up are Matt Helm, 3B, Hamilton HS, Chandler, Ariz. (their 7th rounder) and Patrick Schuster, LHP, Mitchell HS, New Port Richey, Fla. (their 13th rounder).

Red Sox sign tenth round P Brandon Jacobs for $750k.

Update on unsigned A's picks SS Grant Green and C Max Stassi

Genske said put the chances of Stassi signing at 50-50. It's believed that the A's have budgeted first-round-level money for Stassi, but only to a certain point; the sum still has to make sense from a baseball standpoint, according to a team source.

Reds still "far apart" with top pick P Mike Leake

Last week, Reds general manager Walt Jocketty was optimistic Cincinnati could soon sign first-round Draft pick Mike Leake.

This week? Not as much....

The Braves' signing of their seventh overall pick, lefty pitcher Mike Minor, to a $2.42 million bonus was above this year's slot recommendation by Major League Baseball and equal to last year's.

"That didn't help us," Jocketty said. "

If it's a MLB contract, then they can spread the bonus over a number of years. If it's a minor league contract, then all the money is due at once. So a $7.5 million contract over 5 years means that the $7.5 million will be paid out of 5 years. It has NOTHING to do with free agency, arbitration or service time.

I feel like the Braves were the only team this year that didn't have some significantly overslot signing this year (I don't consider consider giving last year's slot to Mike "Chuck James" Minor really breaking the bank). It's quite disappointing.

$500K bonuses were being doled out like candy.
   98. Honkie Kong Posted: August 18, 2009 at 06:18 AM (#3296189)
But then, Braves usually don't hand out big bonuses. Heyward signed for slot.

Francoeur was a bonus baby. Hmm, maybe Milligan and Thompson last year, but I think they signed very close to their slot.

The Tigers also signed Jacob Turner to a MLB deal. $4.7M bonus, and possibly worth up to $7M.

I guess if they were willing to spend that kind of cash on a high school pitcher and give another MLB deal, they preferred Turner to Matzek?
