Draft signings

Today’s the last day that 2011 draft picks can be signed. I would expect a rash of announcements as we get close to the midnight deadline.

Post ‘em here.

Mets have signed 15th-rounder Phillip Evans for $650K, the highest bonus they have ever paid below the second round. Evans is a shortstop from LaCosta Canyon HS in Carlsbad, CA who the Mets signed away from a San Diego State commitment. Good bat, solid glove, will probably stay in the middle infield.

I was a bit surprised Dean signed so cheaply with Toronto ($737.5K, TOR-13) ... I bet if teams thought he'd sign for that price, he'd've gone no later than round 2. Also surprised Camarena only needed $335K to ink with the Yanks (20th rd) - I agreed with those who thought that his stock could rise in college (as a polished two-way guy).

Nice to see the Mets signing Evans and Brad Marquez. They are finally being aggressive in the draft like they always should have been. Now they just have to get Nimmo done so I'm not forced to eat my words.

Royals signed 29th round pick RHP Jake Junis for $675k. He was a NC State commit. They also signed 4th round pick RHP Kyle Smith for $695k. He was a Florida commit. Couple nice gets. Will be interesting to see if they land Bryan Brickhouse, their third round pick. I'm fairly confident their first rounder Bubba Starling signs. In fact, it sounds Jim Callis sounded confident everyone will sign in the first round except perhaps Tyler Beede, and even he could sign.

Jon Heyman tweets that Gerrit Cole is looking for $15 mill, Danny Hultzen for $13 mill, and neither the Pirates nor the Mariners has gone to $10 mill yet. We all know where this is coming from, right?

I didn't think Boras represented Hultzen though?
   7. bfan Posted: August 15, 2011 at 09:58 PM (#3900652)
With 6 hours left, Cole needs to move about $833,000.00 an hour, and Hultzen about $500,000.00 an hour. I assume late faxes still don't count, and they have to be signed, sealed, delivered, offer and acceptance done by midnight.

rumors are that the phillies have signed supplemental 1st rounder larry green, 2nd rounder roman quinn, and 17th rounder jesen dygestile-therrien. there's also been rumblings about 5th round pick mitchell walding and 15th round pick ryan garvey.
   9. cabintwelve Posted: August 16, 2011 at 01:31 AM (#3900799)
The Twins signed #55, Hudson Boyd for $1M. Slot was $653,400.

Boyd is a HS pitcher from Ft. Myers, FL. Committed to Florida.
   10. The Keith Law Blog Blah Blah (battlekow) Posted: August 16, 2011 at 01:42 AM (#3900809)
The Brewers signed 18th-round SS Chris McFarland for $315K. McFarland was a Rice commit, so that's a little surprising. 16th-round LHP Carlos Rodon will not sign, which Mike will enjoy because it means Rodon will head to NC State instead, and the Brewers are making a late run at 17th-round C Mario Amaral, an FSU commit.

Not to say anything that isn't obvious, but if you're wondering about a given guy - check if they have a twitter account.

Fish look like they've lost on Connor Barron.
   13. Der-K's no Kliph Nesteroff. Posted: August 16, 2011 at 02:38 AM (#3900860)
rumor: 3rd rounder Matt Purke will sign a big league deal with the Nats. (He has been a big time prospect in the past but had shoulder woes this year ... rumored as a possible #1 next year if healthy)
   14. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: August 16, 2011 at 02:39 AM (#3900861)
KLaw says Tyler Beede and the Jays are seven figures apart.
   15. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: August 16, 2011 at 02:41 AM (#3900862)
Barron is a comp pick next year right?

Royals landed Brickhouse for$ 1.5 mill. Also like the Cards getting Charlie Tilson for $1.25 mill. He was a first rd talent til he got hurt and he could be in the st louis pen quickly.
   16. Der-K's no Kliph Nesteroff. Posted: August 16, 2011 at 02:49 AM (#3900872)
Barron: yeah, 3rd rd.
Tilson is a CF - do you mean John Stilson (500k to Toronto)? I like him a lot if healthy (SLAP tear).
   17. MM1f Posted: August 16, 2011 at 02:53 AM (#3900874)
Grayson Garvin signed for only 375k in the supplemental-first, about 60% of what his slot was worth. I knew their was some drama going on with his signing, but I can't figure out what exactly. The situation makes it look like a pre-existing injury was discovered. BA had a blog post up but immediately took it down.. http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/2011/08/vandy-duo-signs/

Fish look like they've lost on Connor Barron.

I'm always excited to see mid-major commitments (Barron is a Southern Miss signee) turn down big money and go to school.
   18. Der-K's no Kliph Nesteroff. Posted: August 16, 2011 at 02:57 AM (#3900876)
Garvin: yeah, I saw that (bonus, not article) and thought 'what the hell?'. Makes sense...

Barron: I think his girlfriend goes there (stupid internet) + he'll start as a frosh w/ Vollmuth gone + he's reportedly a good student, so it makes sense. I think he's a real growth stock ... good hitting environment + nice tools.

Giants signed C Andrew Susac.

Twins also got #50 Travis Harrison tonight. Someone posted a link to a post on zoodig, which is apparently a new social media site for athletes. The post included this line:

Harrison has worked extremely hard the last couple of months and is in the best shape of his life.

Umm, yeah!

Bit of older news, but the Braves signing Navery Moore for 400k after drafting him 14th was a bit of a coup.

Nats ink Matt Purke. Around $4 mill. MLB deal. I like Purke a lot but a MLB deal seems like a bad idea

Nats also land Brian Goodwin who was considered a tough sign.

Royals have already spent $5 mill before Bubba and not counting the $5 mill they handed out to theirr two top Latin signees.

Sadly, the Cubs have signed second round pick Daniel Vogelbach to a hefty deal. "Hefty," in this case, is also an unfortunate pun, as Vogelbach weighed in at something like 5'11, 260 pounds. Huge power and great discipline.

Jungmann signed too. I'll stop now...
   50. MM1f Posted: August 16, 2011 at 04:25 AM (#3900957)
MLB deal for a HS kid scares the buh-jeebies out of me, but Bundy SHOULD be worth it. Also, by being a teenager on the 40-man roster I assume he'll have four, instead of three, option years, which helps. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think if a player runs out of options before a certain age he is given a 4th option year.
   51. MM1f Posted: August 16, 2011 at 04:27 AM (#3900961)
Weird that Bundy, a HS pick, gets an MLB deal but Cole, #1 overall pick and a collegian, gets a minor league deal

So Beede's the only 1st rounder not to sign but the Jays did land Norris & a whole pile of other over slot guys. Hard to be too upset by that. Hopefully the local media doesn't try and spin it as comparable to the Paxton/Barrett/Eliopoulos clusterfrak.
   57. rlc Posted: August 16, 2011 at 05:30 AM (#3901012)
Oh, the O's also signed 3rd basemen Jason Esposito (2nd round, Vandy) and Nick Delmonico (6th, HS)

$900k less than the $1.5 million bonus he and the Royals agreed on when he came out of HS, only to have him back out.

According to some tweets of people I don't know, he did not.

It looks like the A's didn't sign a single overslot guy and only one high schooler, a 44th round guy who signed three weeks ago. Which makes sense, as it's not like they have to build through the draft or anything. Wolff is really all out to not tick off Uncle Bud. What a mess.

alex meyer: $2MM bonus
brian goodwin: $3MM bonus
matt purke: $4MM bonus

pirates top 2 picks:
gerritt cole: $8MM bonus
josh bell: $5MM bonus

i'm starting to think a hard slotting system might be a bit of a holdup in the next CBA.

Baseball America says not.

i'm starting to think a hard slotting system might be a bit of a holdup in the next CBA.

In what sense? If MLB truly wants to bring signing bonuses down, hard slotting is the only way that will happen, and the MLBPA might very well be prepared to trade off something else - possibly removal of the Super 2 arbitration limit - in exchange.
