Phillies’ Zack Wheeler puts end to insult-slinging with Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen

After two days of slinging passive-aggressive insults with New York Mets General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen, Wheeler put a stop to the back-and-forth Saturday before working out with Phillies pitchers and catchers at the Carpenter Complex.

“He’s taken a couple of things I said to heart, I guess, that I really didn’t mean for him to do,” Wheeler said. “But I don’t care.”

It all began Thursday when Wheeler told a New York Post reporter that he “heard crickets” from the Mets when his agent gave them a chance to match the Phillies’ five-year, $118 million offer.

Brodie Van Wagenen: Mets have ‘deepest rotation in baseball,’ Steven Matz still seen as starter

Brodie Van Wagenen said Thursday at the Winter Meetings that the Mets have “probably the deepest starting pitching rotation in baseball,” noting that the added depth after signing Rick Porcello and Michael Wacha gives the team lots of “flexibility” when it comes to how they prepare for 2020.

As things currently stand, the Mets have Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, Marcus Stroman, Steven Matz, Porcello, and Wacha as rotation options.

They also have the ability to use Seth Lugo or Robert Gsellman in the rotation, with Van Wagenen saying the Mets are “staring at eight potential starting pitchers.”

But Lugo and Gsellman will almost certainly be in the bullpen, Van Wagenen suggested, adding that “nothing has changed” regarding his stance that Syndergaard is staying, while saying that he views Matz as a starting pitcher.

Bit presumptive, isn’t it?

Beltrán: Need to be “best friend” to Mets’ GM as manager

NEW YORK (AP) — Carlos Beltrán was back in familiar blue pinstripes Monday, buttoning up a New York Mets uniform while standing next to his new boss, Brodie Van Wagenen.

The first-time manager is taking over following a tenuous season at Citi Field, and his plan to calm the clubhouse works from the top down. That means Van Wagenen isn’t just getting a new employee.

“When you’re a manager, literally, your GM has to be your best friend,” he said.

Beltrán was introduced as Mets manager by Van Wagenen and Mets Chief Operating Officer Jeff Wilpon during a news conference in Queens. Beltrán, who spent seven of his 20 seasons as a player with the Mets, identified inconsistency as the culprit for New York’s rocky and disappointing 86-win season.

Seems strange to me, for various reasons…..
