Sources: MLBPA rejects universal DH, expanded playoffs

The Major League Baseball Players Association has turned down latest MLB proposal for the universal designated hitter and an expanded playoff format, sources confirmed to ESPN.

The news was first reported by MLB Network.

The union’s stance has been all along that it did not want to talk about a trade of the universal DH—which benefits a group of players—in return for expanded playoffs. Nonetheless, MLB included the two items in its proposal, and that concept has been turned down, per sources.

The universal DH and expanded playoff format were implemented for 2020 during the 60-game shortened regular season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

MLB rule changes: League still discussing universal DH and expanded playoffs for 2021 season

Major League Baseball, fearing that the pandemic could create havoc with their scheduling once again, is proposing the return of seven-inning doubleheaders and extra-inning games beginning with a runner on second base, two persons with knowledge of their discussions told USA TODAY Sports.

The persons were unauthorized to publicly discuss MLB’s plan because of the on-going negotiations with the Major League Baseball Players Association, which must approve the rule changes.

Yet, the rules that were implemented for the first time in 2020 during the 60-game shortened season, designed primarily to limit the length of games during the pandemic, were widely embraced by the players, with MLB managers advocating for the rules to return.

“Change is abundant now,’’ Oakland A’s manager Bob Melvin said last month, “in every walk of life. And if you don’t embrace it, you get stuck in the mud.’’

While the union is expected to approve the rule changes for the 2021 season, the two sides still have not determined whether there will be a universal DH or an expanded postseason with the rosters remaining at 26 players.

Report: MLB informs teams to plan for no universal DH in 2021

It seems some things will return to normal in Major League Baseball next season.

MLB instructed clubs in a memo last week to operate under the assumption that there won’t be a designated hitter in the National League during the 2021 campaign, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports.

No final decision has been made, and “few will complain if the league and union reach agreement to the contrary,” Rosenthal adds.

Some teams, including the San Francisco Giants, have already approached the offseason as though there won’t be a DH in the NL next season.

How MLB is hurting free agents by dragging feet on National League DH rule for 2021

ion where they are trying to build their best roster possible, but they also have to have contingencies in place for either scenario. We know their interleague games need a DH anyway, but that’s a far cry from using one every day, especially if we’re looking at a full season as opposed to the 60-game mish-mash we just experienced.

Of course, this pales in comparison to what it is doing to the players, who are already getting squeezed after the owners didn’t get any gate money in 2020….

Instead, players like Miller and Santana are probably going to be stuck waiting around this winter. Even just a little certainty would help all parties involved. AL teams would know whether or not NL teams are in the market for a DH and then could react accordingly. From there, offers can start rolling in and players can start making decisions.

Also, the trickle down effect could end up affecting the markets for position players like Justin Turner, Michael Brantley, Joc Pederson, Brett Gardner, Tommy La Stella, Mitch Moreland and more (Yasiel Puig?).
