Craig, Cavan Biggio become second father-son duo to hit for the cycle in MLB

BALTIMORE – Rookie Cavan Biggio hit for the cycle, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-5 on Tuesday night.

Biggio homered in the third, singled in the sixth, doubled in the eighth and tripled in the ninth. He drove in four runs and scored three times.

Biggio and his father, Craig, a Hall of Famer with the Houston Astros, are the second father-son duo in major league history to hit for the cycle, joining Daryle and Gary Ward.

Something to add to the notes on baseball families we’ve been compiling in another thread.

Carl Yastrzemski’s Grandson Mike to Make Fenway Park Debut

Giants rookie outfielder Mike Yastrzemski will play on the same field his grandfather played on during his 23-year career when the Giants face the Red Sox this week at Fenway Park.

Yastrzemski, who is the grandson of Red Sox Hall of Famer and 1967 AL MVP Carl, got his first Big League action in late May. San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said Mike will play all three games of the series that starts Tuesday, according to Ron Kroichick of the San Francisco Chronicle.

He is batting .265 for the season with 19 home runs and 51 RBIs.

A little squib, for those of us interested in family lineages…..

One brother hit his first MLB homer. The other got called up. On the same exact day

And now, something from the lighter side of sports.

NEW YORK — Talk about an unforgettable day for the Heineman family.

Texas Rangers outfielder Scott Heineman hit his first career major-league home run on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium — the same exact day his brother, Tyler, earned his first career major-league call-up from the Miami Marlins.

“It was pretty special,” Scott said after the Rangers lost 10-1 to the New York Yankees. “And it was funny, going into the at-bat ‘Rougie’ [Rougned Odor] was all over me. He’s like, ‘You beat your brother to the big leagues, but are you going to beat him to a home run? Don’t let him beat you.’ So it was cool to get it out of the way.”

Scott’s parents, Steve and Kathy, both grew up in New York. Steve was a Mets fan, though he did take his sons to old Yankee Stadium.
