Greg Bird signs minor league deal with Rangers

Former Yankees first baseman Greg Bird flew south to Texas for the winter, signing a minor league deal with the Rangers.

Bird also received an invite to Spring Training. The 27-year-old was highly touted as a Yankee prospect, clubbing 11 home runs in his first 46 games in 2015 and establishing himself as Mark Teixeira’s successor. But injuries and poor hitting derailed Bird’s Yankees career as he hit .194 since 2016. Over that stretch, he posted a wRC+ of 86, meaning his offense has been 14% worse than league average.

Despite his struggles, Bird remained a regular fixture on the Yankees, even starting at first on Opening Day. However, Luke Voit has been dominant at the plate (.285, 35 home runs, 141 wRC+) since the Yankees acquired him in 2018. Mike Ford’s impressive 2019 debut made Bird redundant on the Yankees roster, making him an unsurprising non-tender.

Well, that’s one less Yankee on the IL next year…...

Bye Bye Birdie for New York Yankees: Bird now a free agent

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s Bye Bye Birdie for the New York Yankees.

First baseman Greg Bird became a free agent Wednesday after he cleared waivers and refused an outright assignment to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Bird, who turned 27 on Nov. 9, debuted on Aug. 13, 2015, and hit .261 with 11 homers and 31 RBIs in 46 games. He missed all of 2016 following surgery that Feb. 2 to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder, an injury originally sustained that May with Double-A Trenton.

Bird returned to bat .451 with eight homers in spring training during 2017 but fouled a ball off his right ankle March 30, started the season 6 for 60 and went on the disabled list May 2.

For those wondering, Bring Back Birdie was a notorious disaster of the Broadway stage in the early 1980s.
