Experts predict MLB’s next great superstar

Mark Feinsand, executive reporter: I know it might sound crazy to say this given that he plays in Tampa Bay, but I feel like Wander Franco is the guy. The hype around him has been crazy, he’s on a team that contends annually, and he has that superstar aura we look for in these guys. Now he just needs to stay healthy.

Andrew Simon, editor/writer/researcher: I’ll go with Julio Rodríguez. The talent is obviously there, the production is getting there, and if we’re considering star power, he also has the sort of magnetic personality that could make him one of the faces of the game.

David Adler, researcher/reporter: Bobby Witt Jr. And it won’t even take five years. I’m all in on him. Love the swing, love the tools, love everything.

MLB’s 2022 All-Fun Team: Jazz Chisholm, Aaron Judge, José Ramírez among most enjoyable players to watch

Jazz Chisholm, Marlins - If there’s a team captain here, it’s Jazz. He’s taken over the mantle from the mightily struggling Javier Báez. Chisholm checks so many boxes. He’s an extra-base machine of all varieties (seven doubles, four triples, 13 homers). He’s a power-speed combo when you look at just the home runs and steals. He’ll make things happen on the bases other than steals, including how good he is at bunting for a hit. He’ll make exciting defensive plays. He’s always outwardly amped up and his home run trots are something to behold. The different colors in his hair are just a bonus. All hail our captain.

Jose Altuve, Astros - He’s forever negatively branded in many circles of baseball fans. For me, he’s still the 5-foot-6 dude who crushes baseballs and is a joy to watch.

Ozzie Albies, Braves - Same ballpark, but without the negative reactions from the masses. It’s a shame he’s out for a while now. I’ll miss him and I won’t be alone.

Christopher Morel, Cubs - Ever since he homered in his first career at-bat, it’s been evident he’s having the time of his life. In terms of stuffing the stat sheet, he’s similar to Chisholm, too.

Red-hot Marlins keeping ‘lightning rod’ Jazz Chisholm in check

Don Mattingly got his Marlins together for a meeting at just the right time, inspiring perhaps their best game of the year (a 12-2 win Tuesday over the Nationals) and a winning streak. Jazz Chisholm has turned into a star in Miami. But Chisholm turned out to be the subject for criticism in the team meeting, according to sources, as teammates apparently aren’t always as enamored as fans who love the style and sizzle.

Mattingly said he didn’t want anyone talking behind anyone’s back, and perhaps a little up-front honesty worked. Quizzed on what specifically was said to Chisholm, Marlins GM Kim Ng declined to elaborate further: “Reluctant to provide further detail — happy everyone is responding.”

Chisholm went out and hit two home runs that game, and later in an interview on MLB Network said, “I have that tool that’s called, I don’t care. I just go out there and have fun.”

One person, who suggested teammates may be “jealous,” said, “Jazz is like Dennis Rodman. He will always be a lightning rod. But he works and plays hard.”

Ng had a simple explanation for Chisholm’s recent exploits: “He’s good.”

These 5 MLB Breakouts Are (Probably) For Real

J.P. Crawford, Seattle Mariners
The aforementioned established major leaguer, J.P. Crawford graduated as a prospect during the 2018 season. Known for his consistent presence on defensive highlight reels, Crawford’s glove made up the lion’s share of his value as a big leaguer. Coming into the 2022 season, however, Crawford’s offensive output had been on a three-year incline, netting wRC+ marks of 87, 95 and 103 over the past three seasons. That alone earned him a five-year extension.

While Crawford has always shown an above-average skill set when it comes to avoiding strikeouts and drawing walks, with rates near or better than the league average three years running, the best mark he had mustered in weighted on-base average (wOBA) was a meager .314. For his career to date before this season, his triple slash was a rather tepid .250/.331/.367. This year, Crawford is mashing to a much stronger .289/.368/.444 — good for 46 percent above the league average — with a wOBA of .360.

Marlins’ Jazz Chisholm breaks down the most entertaining at-bat of the 2022 MLB season

— First, Chisholm is upset with a high strike called by umpire Phil Cuzzi. He takes issue with the call and has some words for Cuzzi.

— On the next pitch, Chisholm takes what he believes to be a meatball. He steps out and takes his time, with Cuzzi urging him to get back into the box.

— Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina urges Brooks to throw an 0-2 pitch while Chisholm is out of the box after Cuzzi signaled for play to resume.

— Brooks doesn’t throw the pitch, much to Molina’s chagrin. The catcher calls time, giving Chisholm a break.

— On the 0-2 pitch, Chisholm demolishes a Brooks breaking ball, sending it deep to right field and gone. On his way to first base, he demonstrates his baskeball shooting form. (Just in time for the NBA playoffs.)

— He crosses the plate with his signature Eurostep and appears to have words for Cuzzi.
