ESPN sets ‘Sunday Night Baseball’ lineup, moves Jessica Mendoza to weeknights

CLEVELAND, Ohio—ESPN will not replace Jessica Mendoza for its “Sunday Night Baseball” broadcasts, instead opting for a two-man booth with Matt Vasgersian and Alex Rodriguez returning to their roles as play-by-play announcer and analyst, respectively. Buster Onley will also continue to serve as the dugout reporter, the network announced Thursday.

Mendoza, who spent the last four full seasons on “Sunday Night Baseball,” will instead work weeknight games, joining a rotation of analysts that includes former Indians Eduardo Perez and Rick Sutcliffe, along with Tim Kurkjian. Karl Ravech, Jon Sciambi and Dave Flemming will take turns doing play-by-play during the week.

Mendoza will also make regular appearances on “Baseball Tonight,” “SportsCenter,” “Get Up,” and “First Take” as part of her new contract. She becomes the first woman to serve as a solo analyst on nationally televised MLB games. Her expanded role comes after she sparked a bit of controversy in the offseason by criticizing former Astros pitcher Mike Fiers for blowing the lid on the team’s sign-stealing scheme. Mendoza was moonlighting as an advisor to the Mets at the time. Though she tried to walk back her comments, the incident raised concerns over a conflict of interest.

For those curious involving how the Worldwide Leader will cover baseball this year.

Manfred concerned with team/media roles of Martinez, Mendoza

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The dual roles of former Boston pitcher Pedro Martinez and ex-Olympic softball player Jessica Mendoza as team employees and broadcasters have drawn the concern of baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred.

Martinez is a Red Sox special assistant and an analyst for TBS. Mendoza is a New York Mets baseball operations adviser and an ESPN broadcaster.

Both criticized pitcher Mike Fiers for revealing the Houston Astros’ sign-stealing scam to The Athletic. Fiers, now with Oakland, sparked an investigation that led to the departures of 10% of the major league managers: Houston’s AJ Hinch, Boston’s Alex Cora and the Mets’ Carlos Beltrán.

“I’m a transparency guy,” Manfred said Thursday after an owners meeting. “That someone should be kind of singled out because they saw something that was wrong and decided to talk about it, I don’t agree with that.”

Which, knowing Manfred, means he’ll hem and haw about this for months and then ultimately do nothing.

ESPN is reportedly removing Jessica Mendoza from Sunday Night Baseball

It appears that ESPN is set to take Jessica Mendoza off Sunday Night Baseball. There’s been a lot of criticism of the “disaster” of the current SNB booth (Matt Vasgersian, Alex Rodriguez, and Mendoza) overall, and Mendoza in particular herself has been under incredible fire recently for her comments across ESPN shows bashing Mike Fiers for blowing the whistle on the Houston Astros’ electronic sign stealing (which drew extra criticism considering her role with the New York Mets and their hire of key Astros’ scandal figure Carlos Beltran).

Now, Andrew Marchand of The New York Post has reported that Mendoza appears set to be reassigned, although it’s not 100 percent certain yet:

“ESPN is working toward removing Jessica Mendoza from its “Sunday Night Baseball” booth, The Post has learned.

As for the rest of the SNB booth, ESPN executives are still determining its plan, though, Alex Rodriguez has been assured that he is welcomed back, according to sources.”

Should we be sending our cover letters and CVs to the Worldwide Leader?

Column: Jessica Mendoza just gave ESPN a new reason to dump her when she criticized the whistleblowe

Baseball has been rocked by a cheating scandal, and you know what ESPN analyst Jessica Mendoza said “doesn’t sit well with” her and makes her “sad for the sport”?

That former Astros pitcher Mike Fiers told The Athletic about the team’s elaborate system for stealing opposing catchers’ signs and alerting batters when a breaking ball was on the way.

Talk about a Mendoza line no one in baseball should go near. That’s crazy.

The sport’s integrity was compromised, yet Thursday on ESPN’s “Golic and Wingo,” Mendoza said what made her queasy was that Fiers discussed it on the record with reporters Ken Rosenthal (no relation) and Evan Drellich.

Some commentary on a sordid addition to an already-sordid story.
