MLB umpire Joe West has never missed a call. Just ask him

Mostly, players and managers will argue, West is a good umpire. No one can remember him losing control of an important game because the situation was too big. Still, the questions always linger when he works.

Is he too big for the game? Can his loud personality, his arrogance get in the way?

Managers and players will tell you that there’s a side of him that screams: How dare you question me! Who are you to speak in my presence? I’m Joe West!

One manager said, “Sometimes Joe likes the villain role a little too much.”

West says he has never missed a call.

“My fourth year, [then-Padres manager] Dick Williams came out of the dugout to argue a play and said, ‘Just tell me you missed it and I’ll go away,’” West said. “I said, ‘I’ve never missed one.’ He said, ‘You can’t be that arrogant.’ I said, ‘That’s not arrogance. I don’t call them all right, but I’ve been out here for all of them. And that just blew his mind.’”

How does West answer those who say he is arrogant?

“I don’t have to answer,” he said. “Most of them don’t have the guts to say it to your face.”

Nationals GM Mike Rizzo ejected from upper deck of stadium by Joe West’s crew in bizarre moment

During the seventh inning, while Rizzo was watching from the upper deck of the stadium, umpire Hunter Wendelstedt suddenly could be heard on the broadcast saying, “you’re out,” while pointing up toward the stands.

He then asked for security to be called before cameras turned to Rizzo — who was seen standing alone and not wearing a mask in a section of the stadium.

Rizzo, West said, had been yelling at umpires from his suite, saying things like “you’re brutal.” Because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the lack of fans in the stadium, everything can be heard down on the field.

“I wouldn’t take that from a player. I wouldn’t take that from a manager,” West said, via the Associated Press. “If it was Donald Trump, I’d eject him, too. But I’d still vote for him.”

MLB umpire Joe West says U.S. coronavirus deaths aren’t actually from coronavirus

In an interview with The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, West somewhat irresponsibly says he believes that many of the nation’s COVID-19 deaths — of which there are roughly 130,000 — actually don’t have anything to do with the coronavirus.

“I said, ‘Look, most of these people that they’re reporting are dying are not healthy to begin with. I’ve lost 25 pounds over the winter. I’m playing golf every day in the heat. I’m fine. I’m not going to back down now.’

“I don’t believe in my heart that all these deaths have been from the coronavirus,” West continued. “I believe it may have contributed to some of the deaths. I said, ‘I’m not going to opt out. I’m going to work. And I’m going to work until you take me off the field or I get hurt, whatever. I’m working.’”

With roughly 130,000 coronavirus deaths in the United States, West’s take is an interesting. Per the CDC, those 130,000 deaths have all been caused by the coronavirus.

Not the first time West would be wrong on who is safe.
