Orioles’ John Means hopes that 2019 success was no fluke

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — John Means was a long shot to even make the Baltimore Orioles’ roster a year ago. Each time the Orioles added a player to the 40-man roster, Means thought he’d be the one to lose his spot.

Means not only survived spring training with the Orioles, he became their most dependable pitcher and the team’s All-Star representative.

The 26-year-old left-hander, who never made any of the Orioles’ top prospect lists, had a solid season, with a 12-11 record and 3.60 ERA. Means finished second in American League rookie of the year voting.

This year, Means not only has a spot on the club, he could be the Orioles’ opening day starter on March 26. However, he said that’s not something he’s thinking about.

Sunday Notes: Red Sox Prospect Jarren Duran is a Speedy, Intense Anomaly

My first ever conversation with Jarren Duran took place prior to spring training when the Red Sox held their annual rookie development camp. Things started off clumsily. The speedy outfield prospect has a certain intensity about him, and his responses to my initial inquiries came couched with edgy caution.

Duran has a 50% ground-ball rate since turning pro, and when I noted that worm-killing isn’t exactly de rigueur in today’s game, his reply was a terse, “Yeah, but I can’t beat out a fly ball. That would be a waste of my speed, so why not use the tool that I have?”

Fair enough. Duran has plus-plus wheels — he swiped 46 bags last season — and he profiles as a table-setter as opposed to a bopper. Even so, is a willingness to stay on the ground really in his best interest?

“I’m willing to accept any ball that will give me a hit,” Duran proclaimed. “Ground balls. Line drives. Even fly balls. I’m just trying to make hard contact.”

As always, feel free to jump in with stories not given entries of their own.

2019 Rookie of the Year: Breaking down the finalists

Awards announcements represent the final chapter of a Major League Baseball season.

The first winners will be revealed Monday when the Baseball Writers Association of America names the American and National League Rookies of the Year.

This race should be more clear cut than last year’s, but closer than the 2017 contest. The awards winners should follow the theme of the 2019 season as the big boppers with the gaudy home-run numbers are likely to take home the hardware.

New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso and Houston Astros bruiser Yordan Alvarez are the league’s respective frontrunners. But cases can be made for Mike Soroka, who emerged as an ace for an Atlanta Braves club that won a second consecutive division title, and John Means, one of the few bright spots for a 54-win Baltimore Orioles squad.

Interesting to ponder, perhaps less for who will win, and more concerning what careers we can expect from these players.
