Jordan Zimmermann announces his retirement from baseball

It took Jordan Zimmermann more than 12 years in the majors to finally get a chance to pitch for his home-state team, but that lure wasn’t strong enough to continue his long and successful career.

After only two appearances with the Milwaukee Brewers, the Auburndale native announced Tuesday he is retiring from baseball. And, unlike his “two-hour retirement” a couple weeks ago, this time Zimmermann means it.

“I have had the joy of playing the game that I love for the past 15 years,” Zimmermann said in a statement released by the club. “I will forever be thankful to the Washington Nationals and Detroit Tigers for allowing me to live out this dream. It has been particularly special to be able to end it all playing for my hometown team, the Milwaukee Brewers.

“Thank you to all of my friends, teammates and family members who have been by my side throughout this incredible journey. I will miss the game greatly, but I’m ready for the new phase of my life.”

Zimmermann, who will be 35 on May 23, pitched twice in relief for the Brewers, who added him to their roster April 29. Both times came in mop-up roles – 3⅔ innings on May 2 in a 16-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers and two innings Friday night in a 6-1 defeat in Miami.

Jordan Zimmermann retired ‘for 2 hours,’ then Crew called

Right-hander Jordan Zimmermann, the pride of Auburndale, Wis. and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, who made a pair of All-Star teams with the Nationals, twice garnered National League Cy Young Award votes and once led the NL in wins before struggling to shoulder the expectations of a $100 million contract with Detroit, decided to retire from professional baseball this week.

It might have been the shortest retirement in history.

“I think I was retired for about two hours,” Zimmermann said.

In a turnaround straight out of a movie script, Zimmermann is continuing his professional career with the team he cheered for as a boy. He told the story of this dramatic turn of events on Friday, a day after the Brewers called Zimmermann to the big leagues and put him on the cusp of becoming the 11th Wisconsin native to wear the uniform in a regular-season game.
