Giants’ Mike Yastrzemski not taking anything for granted after breakout year

SAN FRANCISCO—The Giants never talked of rebuilding in 2019, preferring instead to put the focus on being competitive as long as possible. But if you asked team officials for their true feelings, the sense was always that this past season was a transition year to 2020 and beyond.

In that respect, there might not have been a greater development over the course of the season than the emergence of outfielder Mike Yastrzemski. He can be Farhan Zaidi’s Northern California version of Chris Taylor or Max Muncy, older prospects who also flourished when given the opportunity to prove that they were everyday big leaguers.

Yastrzemski isn’t looking at it that way, though.

“I’m trying to take the offseason and understand that there’s a lot of work to be done still,” Yastrzemski said at the end of his first season. “It’s never being satisfied with where you are. You can’t take it for granted. It’s a time to get healthy and to get stronger and better.”

Carl Yastrzemski’s Grandson Mike to Make Fenway Park Debut

Giants rookie outfielder Mike Yastrzemski will play on the same field his grandfather played on during his 23-year career when the Giants face the Red Sox this week at Fenway Park.

Yastrzemski, who is the grandson of Red Sox Hall of Famer and 1967 AL MVP Carl, got his first Big League action in late May. San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said Mike will play all three games of the series that starts Tuesday, according to Ron Kroichick of the San Francisco Chronicle.

He is batting .265 for the season with 19 home runs and 51 RBIs.

A little squib, for those of us interested in family lineages…..

Carl Yastrzemski knows it’ll be ‘emotional’ to see Mike play at Fenway

It took some time—longer than he would have liked—but Mike Yastrzemski finally is making a name for himself at the big league level.

Yastrzemski spent six seasons in the Baltimore Orioles’ farm system before the Giants traded for him in March. Since donning the SF orange and black, he has helped transform the Giants’ outfield from one of the worst in baseball into one of the team’s strengths.

In 74 games for the Giants, Yastrzemski is hitting .259 with 17 home runs, 47 RBI and an .890 OPS. His emergence with the Giants has made one person, in particular, very proud: His grandfather, Boston Red Sox legend Carl Yastrzemski.

“You know, the main thing is, he’s a great kid,” Carl Yastrzemski told The Athletic’s Steve Buckley. “He’s worked hard. He always thought he was going to make it and I’m very, very happy for him.”

Something very touching for me, for very personal reasons….
