Fixing the All-Time MVP List

“Yes, Mays was the best player in his league just about every year from 1954–1966; but you’re not a victim of outright theft when the MVP goes to guys like Koufax, Robinson, Aaron, and Banks. That said, you are a victim when you see the likes of Maury Wills (1962) and Ken Boyer (1964) claim an award that should rightfully be yours. The fleet-footed Wills could’ve stolen 200 bases that year and not been as valuable as Mays.”

The 20 most valuable players in baseball (and this list might surprise you)

But then the other day I was at Costco and saw the word “value” over and over again flanking cookies and beer, and it made me wonder if we should be framing the MVP debate in a new way….

But it’s hard to talk about “value” and not look at which players are providing the most bang for the buck. Or, if it makes you more comfortable, which players are most criminally underpaid. It’s reasonable to think this way because arriving at X — where X is the most value and value is determined by wins — while constrained by Y — where Y is the money you are allowed to spend on X — is what general managers do for a living. Another way to think of the list below is that if for some reason these players were available in trade, they would command a king’s ransom, a queen’s ransom and all the best dogs in the city.

So, without further ado, here are baseball’s 20 players that provide the most bang for the buck….

Three of the Dodgers’ best players — Cody Bellinger (No. 1 on the list), Walker Buehler (No. 6) and Max Muncy (No. 9) — are also their least expensive. (All three earn a little over $1.5 million combined.) That’s insanely valuable, and it allowed the Dodgers to shell out big bucks for veteran aces like Clayton Kershaw and Hyun-jin Ryu, who will both figure in Cy Young voting.

Should salary factor in Most Valuable Player (to an owner’s bottom line)?
