Tim Hudson hired as Auburn’s volunteer pitching coach

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Former major league pitcher Tim Hudson is Auburn’s new pitching coach.

Auburn announced Wednesday that Hudson will be a volunteer assistant and pitching coach for the program, where he once starred as a two-way player.

Hudson played 17 years in the major leagues with Oakland, Atlanta and San Francisco before retiring in 2015. He went 222-133 with a 3.48 ERA in his career and was a four-time All-Star.

Well, this answers the question of where he is now….

Yankees turn to young pitching coach for high-tech approach

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Just four years ago, Matt Blake was varsity pitching coach at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, about 20 miles outside of Boston. Next spring, the 34-year-old will be guiding the high-priced arms of the New York Yankees.

“The biggest thing is just finding out where the player is at and what it is that makes him tick,” Blake said Thursday after his hiring as Yankees pitching coach was formally announced. “Across different ages or nationalities and cultures, you got to get to the root of what is it that they are seeking for help and then bring it to the edge of their learning zone, if you will.”

Blake replaced Larry Rothschild, who was fired after nine seasons and got hired as pitching coach of the San Diego Padres.

A 2007 graduate of Holy Cross, where he pitched, Blake started coaching at the youth level while working alongside his father.

Doesn’t feel like a common background for pitching coaches traditionally, does it?

Padres hire Larry Rothschild to be their new pitching coach

Larry Rothschild was dismissed by the Yankees at the end of the season. He was not unemployed for long. The San Diego Padres just hired him to be their pitching coach, reports Ken Rosenthal.

Any potential implications as to the Padres plans for this off-season?

AZSnakepit: Matt Herges to be new Arizona Diamondbacks pitching coach

After retiring from the playing field at the end of the 2010 season, he became a coach in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. He progressed through their farm system until 2017, when he was the pitching coach of their AAA affiliate in Oklahoma City. Herges than moved to San Francisco to become their bullpen coach. At the time, it was seen as “a sign they’ll be more analytics-driven,” with Herges’s role including series advance analysis. However, that’s a role which I think is currently occupied for the D-backs by Dan Haren. But Herges does appear to have an analytic bent, saying of his time with LA, “We coaches had to seek [the metrics] out. I wanted to learn because this is where the game is going.”

Yankees announce pitching coach Larry Rothschild won’t return

The New York Yankees have fired pitching coach Larry Rothschild, the team announced Monday.

Rothschild has had the job since 2011, when he replaced Dave Eiland, who was fired.

“I want to personally thank Larry for his near decade of commitment to this organization. Larry cares deeply about his craft and the pitchers under his tutelage, and he played a significant role in our successes over the past nine seasons. There’s a reason why Larry has had the type of distinguished baseball career he’s had, and it starts with experience and dedication that is difficult to emulate,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said in a statement.

Despite sending an MLB-record 30 players to the injured list this season, the Yankees appeared in the American League Championship Series, eventually losing to the Houston Astros. Statistically, the 2019 pitching staff wasn’t as good as the 2018 version, however.

Not savage enough, I take it?

Arizona Diamondbacks, pitching coach Mike Butcher have ‘parted ways’

The Diamondbacks announced Monday that pitching coach Mike Butcher will not return for 2020, the only member of Torey Lovullo’s coaching staff who will not be back.

After the club tweeted that the sides had “parted ways,” Lovullo cited “philosophical” differences with Butcher, saying during a press conference on Monday at Chase Field that he would like to see what a new direction might mean for his pitching staff.

“He had a lot of really good, insightful things that made some of our pitchers continue to plow and push forward,” Lovullo said. “I’m just really, really curious about how we can take the next steps. Maybe a new voice will allow us to get there.”

Butcher was the Diamondbacks’ pitching coach for four seasons starting in 2016, an era in which the club’s pitching staffs ran the gamut in performance, going from one of the worst in baseball in 2016 to one of the best in 2017.  The Diamondbacks ranked third in the National League in ERA in 2018 and fell to seventh in 2019.

So, who tends to get fired quicker as a response to struggles: pitching coaches on losing baseball teams, or choreographers on musicals in trouble?
