MLB Power Rankings: 30 Haikus As We Bid Adieu to the Regular Season

It’s here: the final weekend of the season, and with it, the final (non-playoff) edition of SI’s MLB Power Rankings. There’s no theme this week. Instead, there’s one haiku for every team. (Why not?)
So, once more, let’s rank on:

30. Detroit Tigers (46-112; Last Week: 30)

Oh! pain across all
Welcome to an endless night
‘Til next (next) (next) year

Fall is beginning
Farewell the boys of summer
As we wait for spring

MLB Power Rankings: Just how good are the Twins?

We know a few things for sure. The Houston Astros, New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers are the three best teams in baseball this season. The Atlanta Braves are a rung below, but still very much a challenger to L.A. in the National League.

What we didn’t completely know, but do now, is just what the Minnesota Twins were made of. The Twins, the most surprising of this season’s division leaders, were in a position over the weekend to almost let go of an AL Central lead they’d held since April.

The Cleveland Indians, the team most people figured would win the AL Central, were hosting the Twins for three games and trying to make a 3.5 game lead disappear. If the Indians got hot and swept the Twins? Yikes. It was lining up like one of those moments where Cinderella loses her shoe.

Only it wasn’t. The Twins won two of three, including a doubleheader sweep on Saturday that virtually put the race to bed. The Twins have a 4.5 game lead with an easy schedule ahead. And now the question becomes: How good are the Twins?

So, what do we think of these rankings?

MLB Power Rankings: Who’s the best team in baseball right now? It’s not an easy answer

What matters more this time of the year for a contender — stacking up wins or beating good teams?

The way Major League Baseball is right now, when you see two titans collide — like we did with the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend — it feels more special. It feels almost October-like. Especially when a third of the league isn’t even trying to win this year.

Stacking wins is great if you’re in a postseason chase. Win every game you can. But what about for our weekly MLB Power Rankings? That was the crux of the debate as I pondered this week’s rankings. Should a team like the Astros, who are riding another winning streak, get more credit for beating some not-so-great teams while the Yankees and Dodgers duke it out?

And should a team like the Oakland A’s, who made a statement against the Yankees this week, get more credit for beating a good team than losing to a not-so-great one after that?

Title’s a bit misleading- the teams at the top and bottom are more or less exactly who you thought they were.

MLB Power Rankings: How Close Have Teams Performed to Their Preseason Projections?

A sample of what is found inside:

11. Mets (67–60; Last Week: 14)

For all the sturm und drang that surrounds the Mets (both this season and literally forever), and despite a dismal June that led into a brilliant second half, New York is on pace to finish 85–77. FanGraphs’ preseason prediction: 84–78. Accurately guessing the final stop for the runaway train that is the Mets might be both the most impressive bit of prognostication possible and the most perfect example of how water inevitably finds its level.

So, how many of these standings are legitimate surprises, and how many could be anticipated by other methods?

MLB Power Rankings: What baseball’s best teams need at the trade deadline

Are you ready for Major League Baseball to be consumed by the trade deadline? Because it’s that time of the year.

From today until the trade deadline on July 31, expect plenty of rumors about who might be on the move and just as many takes about who should be buying and selling.

So for this week’s installment of the MLB Power Rankings, we’re doing something special — ranking the teams, but also assessing what they’ll be looking to do in the next two weeks. Particularly with this week’s Top 10.

You mean, other than a good five-cent cigar?
