Omar Vizquel sued for alleged sexual harassment by former batboy

A former batboy with the Birmingham Barons is suing former manager Omar Vizquel for alleged sexual harassment, according to Katie Strang and James Fegan of The Athletic.

Content warning: This story contains details of alleged sexual harassment.

The batboy worked for the Barons — a Double-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox — in 2019. Vizquel was the team’s manager during the 2019 season. In the lawsuit, the batboy alleges Vizquel “repeatedly exposed his erect penis to (him) and forced (him) to wash his back in the shower.” The batboy, who is autistic, believes he was “targeted for sexual harassment because of his disability.”

The complaint claims Vizquel informed the batboy, who is now 25, that Vizquel is interested in men. The batboy reportedly made it clear he did not want to have a sexual relationship with Vizquel. The complaint also claims Vizquel would come up behind the batboy after Vizquel had been in the shower. While having “normal” conversations with the batboy, Vizquel would allegedly flash his erect penis in an attempt to “obtain sexual gratification.”

Vizquel also allegedly once emerged from the shower with an erection and ordered the batboy to wash Vizquel’s back. A batboy with the 2015 Detroit Tigers is alleged to have heard Vizquel make a comment about washing his back when Vizquel was the Tigers’ first base coach, according to the complaint.

Ex-New York Mets GM Jared Porter banned though at least 2022 for inappropriate conduct

Major League Baseball announced Wednesday that former New York Mets general manager Jared Porter has been placed on the ineligible list through at least the end of the 2022 season.

“My office has completed its investigation into alleged inappropriate conduct by Jared Porter. Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. Porter violated MLB’s policies, and that placement on the Ineligible List is warranted. We are committed to providing an appropriate work environment consistent with our values for all those involved in our game,” commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement.

Porter will be eligible to apply for reinstatement after the 2022 season, MLB said.

The Mets fired Porter in January, just more than a month after they hired him as general manager, for sending sexually explicit, uninvited text messages and images to a female reporter in 2016 when he was working for the Chicago Cubs in their front office.

I Am Breaking My Silence About the Baseball Player Who Raped Me

I spent the 2002 M.L.B. season working on a significant story about foreign-born players and how they navigate life in the United States. It was nearly two decades ago, but I remember how much work went into it, the prominent play it received, and how proud of it I was. Looking back, I now wonder how I managed to finish it.

I sat down in a hotel room with my interview subject. We spoke for a few minutes as I asked some questions and he answered. Then he moved suddenly to kiss me. I said, no, no, I don’t want that, but he pushed me over to the bed. I tried to shove him. I said no, stop, no, stop, over and over. He pushed further, getting on top of me, pulling off my skirt, and having sex with me against my will.

While it was happening, I couldn’t process that it was happening to me. I said no, again and again. Too terrified to move, I froze. Afterward, I remember getting in my car, shaking, to drive home, and looking at my blue-and-white skirt from Express, and thinking why did I have to be wearing a skirt? Because it was Texas in summer.

I remember, once I got back to my apartment, drinking a bottle of red wine in a desperate attempt to numb my sadness and rage. Instead, I threw up all over the carpet.

Mickey Callaway placed on MLB ineligible list through 2022 season following sexual harassment investigation

Major League Baseball announced on Wednesday that the league has placed Los Angeles Angels pitching coach Mickey Callaway on the ineligible list, a punishment that will continue at least through the 2022 season. The decision stems from a months-long investigation into his alleged lewd behavior toward five women.

Here’s commissioner Rob Manfred’s statement:

“My office has completed its investigation into allegations of sexual harassment by Mickey Callaway. Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. Callaway violated MLB’s policies, and that placement on the Ineligible List is warranted. We want to thank the many people who cooperated with our Department of Investigations (DOI) in their work, which spanned Mr. Callaway’s positions with three different Clubs. The Clubs that employed Mr. Callaway each fully cooperated with DOI, including providing emails and assisting with identifying key witnesses.  Harassment has no place within Major League Baseball, and we are committed to providing an appropriate work environment for all those involved in our game.”

MLB puts Roberto Alomar on ineligible list after reviewing sexual misconduct allegation

Major League Baseball is placing Roberto Alomar on its ineligible list after reviewing an allegation of sexual misconduct against the Hall of Fame second baseman, according to multiple industry sources.

Alomar’s contract as a consultant to MLB in Puerto Rico was terminated, as anyone on the ineligible list is banned from working in the league office or for any team in the majors or affiliated minors. He also served on commissioner Rob Manfred’s competition committee and worked for the Toronto Blue Jays as a special assistant, but that position was restructured as part of wider cost-cutting moves last September.

The discipline comes after an external law firm hired by MLB investigated the allegation and presented its findings to commissioner Rob Manfred, who determined a violation of league policies occurred.
