Phillies pitcher Jake Arrieta exits spring training game with shoulder stiffness

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Phillies pitcher Jake Arrieta left his start Thursday in the fourth inning with shoulder stiffness. He was not alarmed and called the exit precautionary.

Tests came back normal, and Arrieta said he would have stayed in if it was a regular-season game. He emphasized that it was not an injury.

Arrieta allowed a home run to Tampa Bay’s Hunter Renfroe then recorded the first out of the bottom of the fourth. He was visited on the mound by catcher Andrew Knapp and pitching coach Bryan Price quickly joined them. After several moments of discussion, manager Joe Girardi and athletic trainer Shawn Fcasni joined the group on the mound. Arrieta walked off the mound with Fcasni by his side. The pitcher then huddled in the dugout with Price, Girardi and the athletic training staff.

Suárez working to get his shoulder healed after pool mishap

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Eugenio Suárez was playing in a swimming pool with his children at home in Pinecrest, Florida, and decided to dive into the shallow half.

The Cincinnati Reds third baseman hit the bottom of the pool and wound up with a shoulder injury that has set him back in spring training and left his availability uncertain for opening day.

“I tried to dive in headfirst,” Suárez said. “My hands hit first first and then my shoulder felt like a pop.”

Suárez tore cartilage in his right shoulder and had surgery Jan. 28. For the start of spring training, Suárez was limited to conditioning work while his throwing shoulder healed.

Well, at least he wasn’t washing his truck…..

Hamels rejoins Braves, shoulder still healing

NORTH PORT, Fla. (AP) — Cole Hamels rejoined the Atlanta Braves just in time for their spring training opener. The injured left-hander is still a ways off from using the mound at the club’s new spring home, though.

Hamels signed an $18 million, one-year deal with Atlanta this offseason but informed the team just before camp started that he was experiencing shoulder discomfort during training. The 36-year-old was sent to Dallas to get treatment from surgeon Keith Meister.

Now he’s back but says he’s waiting for inflammation in the shoulder “to calm down.” He expects to remain in North Port after Atlanta breaks camp for opening day.

“I know I’m behind the 8-ball,” he said. “But once I knock (the inflammation) out right away, I know I’ll be able to be the best pitcher I can and put up good numbers.

CC Sabathia leaves possible last appearance with injury

CC Sabathia was taken out of the game in the eighth inning of ALCS Game 4 after suffering an apparent shoulder injury throwing to George Springer. He relieved struggling setup man Adam Ottavino and recorded two outs before being checked on by the team’s training staff.

If the injury is serious and the Astros, who are up 2-1, win the series, it may be Sabathia’s last pitch in pinstripes. The lefty, who won 251 games over the course of his career and went 134-88 in the Bronx, announced his retirement before the season began.

Astros stars Gerrit Cole and George Springer, who slammed a three-run home run against starter Masahiro Tanaka, came to the top step to applaud alongside the Yankee Stadium faithful, who sent him off with a standing ovation. Jonathan Loaisiga retired the final batter to escape the jam.

Sabathia had experienced shoulder trouble shortly before the season ended, which led to him being left off the ALDS roster. The 39-year-old attempted to stay in the game, throwing a warmup pitch mid-batter to test his shoulder. But it didn’t work, and Sabathia walked off the field for likely the final time.

A crying shame, if this is indeed the end.
