How the Royals Hijacked the Undrafted Free Agent Market

Within the first 24 hours, a dozen players had signed off Baseball America’s Top 500. (The five-round draft involved 160 players, which left 340 on the list to sign, return to school, or figure out another path to pro baseball.) No one team nabbed more than two of those players—except Kansas City, which had five. The Royals ended the day with four of the top five overall signings. So how’d they pull it off?

“You want to go to a club that’s going to take care of not only their very top valued players, but also their lower ones,” says catcher Kale Emshoff, No. 174 on the BA 500, who signed with the Royals on Sunday. “You want to know that when you’re in the organization you’re going to be taken care of… That plays a huge role in the decision-making process.”...

The Royals were one of the teams that stood out. In May, the club announced they would not cut any players while the season was halted and committed to paying all of their minor leaguers through the end of the season. The decision came with a statement of support from general manager Dayton Moore: “Understand this,” he told reporters. “The minor league players, the players you’ll never know about, the players that never get out of rookie ball or High A, those players have as much impact on the growth of our game [as] 10-year or 15-year veteran players.”

MLB Teams Get Creative With College Money To Lure UDFAs

One particularly intriguing avenue they’ve explored is offering generous packages of money for college players. Such packages are allowed because they are not paid out in actual cash, but in agreements to be paid later.

For example, a team could offer a college junior to pay for the value of his senior year at school. If they wanted to go a step further, they could offer the equivalent value of two years at a high-end graduate school.

Once again, though, that number is only a value and not actual cash. So, if the player were a college junior signed out of, say, Tennessee, he could ask for a package that would pay him the value of his senior year at Vanderbilt (a more expensive scholarship elsewhere), and then two more years at graduate school somewhere else.

The key here is that the team isn’t paying the player directly, it pays value out to the school at a later date.

And just because the player receives a package worth the equivalent of a year at a premier graduate school, it doesn’t mean he has to spend it that way.

Top 10 MLB Organizations At Identifying Undrafted Free Agents

4. Mets

The Mets are the only other team with the Pirates and Phillies to sign five future All-Stars as NDFA’s: Kevin Mitchell, Jeff Reardon, Heath Bell, Heathcliff Slocumb and Jim Bibby. The five combined for 11 all-star appearances, and Mitchell is the only NDFA to win an MVP award. The Mets also found NDFA successes in 15-year big league reliever Greg Harris and popular former utilityman T.J Rivera.
