Winter meetings winners and losers, starring Scott Boras and his $814M week

SAN DIEGO — Remember when the winter meetings lost their gusto? It sure seemed that way the past few years. Remember when hot-stove season was a free-agent freeze? It sure seemed that way recently too.

Well, the 2019 winter meetings have come and gone and sound the alarm because the winter meetings were back as baseball’s biggest money-spending, team-swapping bonanza.

And it was glorious.

Three days saw the top three free agents — Stephen Strasburg on Monday; Gerrit Cole on Tuesday; Anthony Rendon on Wednesday —  coming off the board with huge deals and bold moves.

So, how would all of you appraise the Winter Meetings?

MLB attendance drops in boom-bust era of big winners, losers

Jumping ahead:

With some teams out of contention even before their first pitch, average attendance has dropped four years in a row for the first time since the commissioner’s office started tracking it in 1980.

“We’re going to draw 68-plus million people at the big league level,” baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said this week, “another 41 million in minor league baseball — they’re actually going to be up. I’ll take 110 million people going to see the sport live. That’s a really, really awesome number in an environment where people have more and more and more alternatives to consume.”

More and more teams have adopted an all-in or all-out philosophy. If they don’t think they can win it, why bother to be in it? Better to shed expensive veterans and rebuild with cheaper rookies — and incur the box-office hit. Management calls that prudent rebuilding. The players’ association labels it tanking.

“We have some of the most remarkably talented players our game has seen as a whole in a long time,” union head Tony Clark said. “But the willful failure of too many franchises to field competitive teams and put their best players on the field is unquestionably hurting our industry.”

So, how do we interpret this state of affairs?

Haves, have-nots: MLB ties mark for 100-win, 100-loss teams

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Baseball’s haves and have-nots sure do have it this year.

The Los Angeles Dodgers gave Major League Baseball its third 100-win team while Kansas City became its fourth 100-loss club Sunday, matching big league records for success and futility.

The Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 7-4, joining the 102-win New York Yankees and Houston Astros as triple-digit victors. It’s the third consecutive year three teams have reached the century mark. Before this run, there were only three 100-game winners in 1942, 1977, 1998, 2002 and 2003.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way”

-Charles Dickens, baseball analyst

100 losses no novelty this year; same with 100 wins

The Baltimore Orioles might lose 110 games and still not end up with the No. 1 pick in the draft.

That race, so to speak, is pretty unforgiving this year.

The Orioles (49-101) split a four-game series at Detroit (45-104) that matched the teams with the two worst records in baseball, and as far as those two teams have sunk, they figure to have company in the triple-digit-losses club. Miami and Kansas City are on pace to reach 100 defeats, and Toronto could end up there, too.

After an age of relative parity, the gap between baseball’s top and its bottom has widened.

Mind you, this hasn’t been a good era for moderation in any regard- could we expect baseball to be immune?
